ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. ARRANTS, OF SOCIETY HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,060, dated January 26, 1875; application led December 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J oHN B. ARRANTS, of Society Hill, Darlington county, South Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Bale- '.lie, lof which the following is a specitication:
My improved tie consists of a block or plate, f to which one end of the hoop is riveted at or' about the middle of the side which is outward when applied to the bale, and across the outside oi' the upper end, and also the inside of the lower end, is a transverse groove, in which a loop is secured of wire, around one bar of which the other end. of the hoop is bent, the loop being` so adjusted on the aforesaid `block that the 'strain of the hoop keeps it in place, and the loop so binds the part of the hoop bent around it in one of the said grooves in the block as to hold it securely.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved tie. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line w .10, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference 4indicate corresponding parts. v
A represents the block or plate of metal, to which one end, B, of the hoop is riveted at C, and which has a transverse groove, D, near the upper end of the outside; also a similar groove,E, near the lower end of the inside. F represents the wire looparound one bar of which theend Gr ofthe hoop is bent,'and which connect-s with the block by engaging'in the grooves in the manner shown in the drawing, the said end G being turned back under itself against the bale, so as to be `bound fast by the strain on the .shoulder H, between groove D and the end of theblock. The end B extends from the rivet() along the block far enough to be also secured in grooveD by the loop, so as not to depend wholly upon the rivet for maintaining the connection with the block.
The loop F iskept in place by the strain on it; but it can be very readily disconnected by pushing one part out of thegroove E, and pulling the other part out of the groove D. The connection is made by merely pulling. the block through the yoke, and slipping them along each other until the loop drops into the grooves.
Havn g thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- The block or plate A, having groovesD and E, attached to part B ofl 'the hoop, in combination with loop F, having part G ot' the hoop connected to it, all substantially as specified.
JOHN' BRooME AREANTS.
