The invention relates to planing machines, and has for its object to provide a device of this character whereby tapered articles suchas wagon poles and fence posts may be formed and planed on both sides simultaneously.
A further object is to providea planing machine comprising vertically disposed cutter heads, one of which heads is yieldably mounted thereby allowing the heads to spread apart as a piece of material is fed therebetween on a template, guidable between rollers carried by the cutterhead shafts, which template spreads the cutterhead according to the'taper of the template.
A further object is to provide horizontally disposed fee'd rollers located forwardly and rearwardly of the cutter` heads and ad jacent the top of the table for feeding the template and material between the cutterheads. Also to provide guide rollers above the feed rollers, yieldably mounted forpreventing upward tilting of the template and material being planed during the planing operation.
A further object is to provide means whereby the fee'd rolls and the cutterheads may be rotated from a single source of ower.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, sho-wn in the drawing, described `and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 5 is a perspective view of one ofVV legs therefor. Extending transversely and beneath the table top 1 is a barV 3, which bar is provided with spaced bearings 4 and 5. The bearing 4t is stationary, while the bearing 5 is carried by a transversely movable dovetailed slide 6, which is slidably mounted in the channel 7 of the bar 3, therefore it will be seen that the shafts 8, which extend vertically through the bearing` members t and 5 may assume positions at different distances from each other against the action of the coiled spring 9 carried by the bearing member 5, consequently the cutters 10, during the feeding of a piece of material therebetween may move in relation to each other according to the size of the piece of material being cut. When it is desired to plane a piece of material into a tapered shape, such for instance as for a wagon pole or a fence post, a template 11 is placed between the rollers 12, which are rotatably mounted on the shafts 8, with the piece of material on the top of the template between the cutter heads 10. As the tapered template is forced inwardly itis obvious that the cutter heads will be forced outwardly in relation to each other cutting the piece of material on opposite sides thereof into a tapered form of the same shape as the template, thereby not only forming a piece of material in tapered form but planing both sides thereof simultaneously. The movable bearing 5 is provided with brackets 13 in the ends of which the ends of the shafts 8 are rotatably mounted, thereby bracing said shafts and preventing springing thereof during a planing operation. The ends of the other shaft 8 are braced by twisted braces 14, which are preferably carried by the transversely disposed bar 3. Secured to the lower ends of the shafts Stare pulleys 15, aroun'd which pulleys endless belts 16 eX- tend, which belts extend rearwardly under `the table top 1 and over a drive pulley 17 which is carried by the drive shaft 18. It will be seen that when the drive shaft 18 is rotated from any suitable source of power belted to the pulley 19, the cutter heads 10 will be simultaneously rotated, thereby insuring a planing-operation on both sides of the piece of material disposed between the cutterheads 10. Extending transversely of the machine beneath the top 1 are shafts 21, which shafts are located at opposite sides of the vertically disposed cutter shafts 8, and are provided with feed rollers 22, which feed the template between the cutterhcads and insure the accurate feeding of the template and piece of material being cut by the cutterheads 10. However to additionally guide the piece of material being cut in its longitudinal movement during a cuttingl operation, the guide rollers 23 are provided, which guide rollers having their pintles 2st rotatably mounted in slidable bearing blocks 25 in vertically disposed brackets 26. The bearing blocks 25 are normally pulled downwardly by means of tension springs 27, and consequently the guide rollers 23 are pulled downwardly into engagement with the upper side of the piece of material being passed through the cutterheads thereby guiding the same. lf so desired the bearing blocks 25 may be held in any desired posin tion by means of pins 28 which may be passed through any of the apertures 29 beneath thc bearing blocks 25.
The drive shaft 18 is provided with a. worm 30. which meshes with a Worm gear 3l carried by the longitudinally disposed shaft 32, which shaft 32 is in turn provided with Worms 33, which mesh with Worm gears 3l; carried by the transversely disposed feed roller shafts 21, therefore it will be seen that the same source of power is utilized for rotating the cutter heads l0 and the feed rollers 22.
From the above it will be seen that a planing machine is provided which is particulai-ly adapted for siniultaneously planing; opposite sides of a piece of material into a tapered form, or in any other form according` tothe shape of the template used. lt will also be seen that all of the mechanism of the machine is operated from a single source of power.
The invention having` been set forth 'what is claimed as neu7 and useful is- A planing' machine comprising a table, a vertically disposed fixed shaft rotatably mounted in the bearing' of said table, a vcrti'cally-y disposed movable shaft extending; through a slot in the table and in parallel relation to the first mentioned shaft, cutter heads carried by the shafts above the table, a transversely disposed bar beneath the table and having a crosshead guide therein, a crosshead block slidably mounted in the guide, and in a bearing of which the movable shaft is rotatably mounted, a coiled spring disposed within the crosshead and forming,` means for forcing the saine towards the first mentioned shaft, driving' connections carried by the lower ends of the shafts, brace arms connecting the ends of the movable shaft and the crosshead, one of which brace arms extends through the slot in the table.
