UNITED STATES JOSEPH P. BRENNAN, 0F MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
SIGN HOLDER FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Application filed October 9, 1925. Serial No. 61,596.
My invention relates to a sign holder adapted to be secured to the filling tube of an automobile; and especially to such a holder that may be easily and quickly placed and secured on the filling tube; that will not interfere wit-l1 the use. of the filling tube for its normal purpose; and that may be so secured to the tube as to strengthen and brace thesame against the extra service required.
The objects of my invention are First, to make a sign holder that may be quickly placed on and fastened to the filling tube, and as quickly removed.
Second, to provide means for reinforc ing the top of the radiator and the tube against the extra strain placed thereon; and
Third, to provide means for preventing the sign turning when in use.
I accomplish these objects as will be more fully, hereinafter set out in the drawings, specification and claims.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a side view of a portion of the upper front end of an automobile radiator showing my invention applied to the filling tube thereof.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front View of the same.
Fig. 3 is a section full size, through the filling tube showing how the attachment is made thereto.
Referring now to the drawings in which the various parts are referred to by numerals,
1 is the fragmentary portion of the radiator, 2, (Fig. 3) is the filling tube projecting upward therefrom. 3 is an exteriorly threaded locking sleeve, a portion of which has been broken away to show the interior threads 4 of the filling tube. 5 is the filling tube sleeve, the upper portion of which is provided with interior threads 6 of the same pitch and diameter as the filling tube threads 4, the lower portion being counterbored to fit over the largest outer diameter of the filling tube.
7 is a reinforcing plate for the top of the radiator which plate is shaped to conform to the curvature of the radiator and has a hole therethrough to permit placing it over the filling tube, and if the base of the filling tube be larger than the top, being made to fit closely there-around. The center portion 8 of the plate 7 projects forward in front of the filling tube and ordinarily beyond the front of the radiator and'has ears or lugs 9 turned upward on both sides to form a post socket. On either sideof this post socket, the front edge 10 of the plate 7 is turned downward at right angles to fit closely over the front edge of the radiator.
11 is the filling tube cap. If desired, the lower edge of the. filling tube sleeve maybe provided with an annular flange 12.
13 is the sign post preferably of channel iron, which post is stepped inand supported by the post socket. This post is secured to the filling tube sleeve 5' by two circumferential bands or clamps 14', preferably of thin metal, which have ears 15 which are clamped to the sign post, and secure the post tothe filling tube sleeve, by bolts 16 which pass through the said ears and the post.
17 is the frame for the sign and 18 the sign, the bottom and sides of the frame being preferably channels and the top, two flat bars which permit a sign to be inserted or removed through the top.
To attach the device to the automobile radiator, the filling cap 11 is removed and the locking sleeve '3 screwed into the filling tube. The reinforcing plate 7 is then dropped into place and the filling tube sleeve 5 screwed firmly down over the locking sleeve until the late 7 is clamped firmly against the top of the radiator, after which the filling cap may be replaced and removed as may be desired or necessary.
The bolts 16 are then loosened and the bands or clamps 14 are slipped over the filling tube sleeve and the bolts again tightened to securely clamp the sign post to the post sleeve.
It will be seen that the post socket forms a secure footing for the post and that when clamped the bands 14 not only hold the sign post securely, but also lock the post sleeve against unscrewing.
It will also be seen that when in place the filling tube sleeve and plate reinforce the radiator top and the filling tube and assist in taking the strains imposed thereon by the sign. The post socket also prevents the sign turning, and distributes any strain from such turning to a large area of the radiator entirely eliminating twisting strains on the filling tube. I
While this description is confined to an interiorly threaded filling tube it will be distinctly understood that it may similarly be used with slight modifications on an exteriorly threaded tube, and that it is not inten-dedto confinethe use o'fthis device to such interiorly threaded tube.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire'to secureby Letters Patent in the United fitates, is

In a sign holder for an automobile, having a radiator andfilling tube; .the:co1nbination with a reinforcing plate adapted to surround :the filling tube and rest on and conform to :therupper surface of theradiator, saidvplateihaving a downwardly turned 'e'dgeradaptedito .engagegthefront edge of: the
