SEWAGE-DISPOSAL APPARATUS.
Application led October 22, 1923. Serial No. 870,180.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sewage disposal apparatus. One object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the character described 6 specially designed for the purpose of dehydrating the sludge resulting from the process of aeration in the preparation of said sludge for the drier. 4I
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the character described embodying means for eliminating from the sludge heavy Inaterial such as sand and other similar foreign matter.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular re ation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the apparatus partly in section; and,
Figure 2 shows an end view, partly in section.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference desi nate similar parts in each of the hgures, tie numeral 1 designates a boxlike casing, having the end chambers 2, 2, enclosed on all sides and beneath, but open above.
There is a lengthwise shaft 3 extending through the casing, and mounted to rotate in suitable fixed bearings, 4, 4. Fixed on this shaft, and located in the casing, there is a cylindrical drum. This drum includes the circular end spiders 5, 5, and the foraininated cylindricalcovering 6 sup-ported on said spiders. This covering is preferably two ply, the inner ply being of sheet metal, suitably slitted, and the outer ply being formed of suitable screen material as shown in Figure l. The ends of this drum run in circular openings in the end artitions 7, 7, which separate the end cham ers 2, 2, from the chamber of the main casing. Entering the main casing there is an inlet pipe 8 controlled by a suitable gate valve 9. This valve is controlled by a suitable governor presently to be described. Fastened on the outside of the front wall there is a float chamber 10 which communicates with the main chamber through the port 11.
There is a float 12 in the float chamber having the stem 13 which is connected at its upper end to one end of the lever 14. This lever is pivoted on top of the standard 15, fixed to one side of the float chamber, and the other end of the lever 14 is connected to the valve stem 16.
When the liquid in the main chamber of the casing exceeds a predetermined level it will enter the float chamber and lift the fioat and close the inlet pipe 8, through the valve 9, and vice versa.
Fixed on one end of the shaft 3 there is a v bevel gear wheel 17, which is in mesh with,
and driven by, a pinion 18 which is fixed on the countershaft 19. This last named shaft also has a belt ulley 20 through which the apparatus may e driven by a suitable driving belt (not shown). The other end of the shaft 3 has a large spur gear 21, fixed thereon.
Above the casing there are the drums 22 and 23. Each of these drums is formed of perforated metal surrounded by a fabric covering, and they are mounted on the respective shafts 24 and 25. There is a spur gear 26 fixed on the shaft 24, and in mesh with and driven by the gear 21. The shaft 24 is rotatable in suitable end bearings 27, 27, which are carried by the swinging side bars 28, 28. These side bars are pivoted, at one end, to the standards 29, 29, upstanding from the casing, and their other ends are supported upon screw jacks, as 30, 30, which are mounted on the casing. By manipulating said jacks the drum 22 may be adjusted toward and from the large drum beneath. The shaft 25, has a spur gear 31 fixed thereon, and in mesh with and driven by the gear 26. This shaft is rotatable in suitable bearings, as 32, which are slidable in the respective tracks, as 33, and which are connected to, and adjustable through, the hand screws, as 34. Through these hand screws the drum 23 may be adjusted toward and from the drum 22. Declining from and havin its inner end adjacent the drum 23 there 1s a deflector 35, for a purpose to be hereinafter stated. The free ends of the swinging bars 28 `are formed into bearings as 36 to receive the shaft`37 and fastened to this shaft there are the swinging arms 38 to which is attached the deflector board 39..
The inner end of this board is held in yieldingcontact with the surface of the drum 22 by means of the weight 40, which is carried on the inner free end of the arm 41. This arm is rigidly secured to the shaft 37 The main chamber has oppositely dis osed false bottoms 42, 42 giving said cham era hopper like contour. The heavy matter in the liquid in the chamber, such as sand and the like will settle down to the bottom of said hopper and may be drained off througlh the end ports 43, 43,- normally closed by t e pliliQgs 44, 44.
ormally the main chamber is partly filled with the sludge which is kept out of the end chambers 2, 2, by the drum in said main chamber only the liquid being permitted to enter through said drum into said end chambers, the solid matter being strained out by said drum. This drum rotates in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figure 2, and the solid matter is carried up on its surface, by adhesion, and passes between 1tand the drum 22, and thence between the drums 22 and 23.
The water will drip from this solid matter back through the drum in the main chamber into the interior of said drum and pass thence into the end chambers 2, 2. The solid matter passing between said drums, as explained, will be compressed and freed from most of the liquid, which will drip back through said drums and find its way eventually into the end chambers. and will pass out throu h the outlets 45, 45, provided in said cham ers. The solid matter will follow around the drums 22 and 23 and fall onto the deiiectors 35 and 39, and drop off into suitable boxes or receptacles provided to receive it.
It is then run through the drier before its final disposition.
What I claim is 1. In a sewage disposal apparatus, the combination with a casing havin a chamber therein whose bottom is of opper-like formation and provided with a discharge port, an end chamber at one end of the casing having a discharge port, said end cham ber communicating with the casing chamber through a circular opening, of a foraminated rotatable drum in the casing, one end of which is fitted into said opening, a pair of foraminated rotatable drums mounted above the casing and arranged to cooperate, one of which is adjustable relative to the other one, and the latter cooperating with, and being adjustable relative to the casing drum, fabric covering for said last mentioned drums, an
inlet entering the casing, said inlet being equipped with an automatic controlling means, and a yieldably mounted deilector, one edge' of which lies adjacent one of the drums of said pair.
2. In a sewage disposal. apparatus, the combination with a casing having a chamber therein provided with a discharge port, an
end chamber at one end of the casing having a discharge port, the casing having an open# ing through which its chamber communicates with the end chamber, of a rotatable foraminated drum in the casing chamber one end of which is adjacent said opening, a pair of rotatable foraminated drums above the casing each being covered with a porous fabric, onr of said drums of said pair cooperating with said drum in the casing, and being adjustable relative thereto, said drums of said pair being arranged to cooperate, and one of them being adjustable relative to the other, an inlet entering the casing chamber, defiectors adjacent each drum of. said pair, one of said deflectors being yieldably mounted.

In a sewage disposal apparatus,acasing having a chamber therein provided with a discharge port, an end chamber at one end of the casing'having a discharge port, the casing having an opening through which its chamber communicates with. the end chamber, a rotatable foraminated drum in the casing chamber one end of which is adjacent said opening, a pair of rotatable foraminated drums above the casing, oppositel declining deflectors adjacent each drum o said pair, one of said drums of said pair cooperating with said drum in the casing, and being adjustable relative thereto, said drums of said pair bein arranged to cooperate, and one of them eing a justable relative to the other, a-fabric covering for each of said pair, an inlet entering the casing chamber and an automatic overning device conrglling the inflow of uid through said in- 4. In a sewage 'disposal apparatus, a cas` ing, end chambers provided at the respective ends of said casing, circular end openings at the casing ends through which said end chambers communicate with the casing chamber, a rotatable foraminated drum in the casing whose ends are fit-ted into said openings, a pair of cooperating rotatable foraminated drums above the casing, a foraminated covering for each drum of said pair, a delector arranged adjacent each of the last mentioned drums, an inlet line entering said casing chamber, said casing chamber and end chambers each having a discharge port, and an outwardly declining deector arrangedadjacent each drum of said pair, one of said deiiectors being adjustable.
7. In a sewage disposal apparatus, the combination with a casing, end chambers provided at the respective ends of'said casing, circular end openings at the casing ends through which said end chambers communicate with the casing chamber, a rotatable foraminated drum in the casing whose ends are tted into said openings, a pair of cooperating rotatable foraminated drums above the casing, fabric covers for each drum of said pair, means for holding one of said pair yie dingly against the other, a deilector arranged adjacent eachof the last mentioned drums, van lnlet line entering said casing chamber, said casing chamber and end chambers each having a discharge ort, an outwardly declining deflector a jacent each drum of said pair and means holding one of said deiectors yieldingly against its corresponding drum.
