This invention relates to packing and shipping cones and. cases. More particularly it is directed to containers or cartons con; structed oi corrugated paper board or the like material for packing and shipping deli *ate apparatus such radio sets meters, typewriters and the like.
An object of? the invention is to provide a packing and shipping box of the character described particularly adapted to receive apparatus having projecting parts and including improved means or rotecting and accon'imodating such protecting parts.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved container or carton of the character described which is of a simple collapsible construction to permit shipping and storing thereof in knocked-down con- ;dition and which may bequickly and easily set up for use, relatively inexpensive to n'ianufacture and eflicient to a high degree for the purposes described Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinaften pointed.
Certain features herein. shown and described are shown, described and claimed in my Patent #l.522,)02 issued January 13, i925, and accordingly are not claimed herein.
With the above exception the invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exempliliedin the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope ot' application will be indicated in the following claims.
Fig. 1 a perspective view showing; a packing and shipping: hon embodying the invention parts of the box being broken a my to show the interior construction;
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional VlBW taken on line ig'. '1 showing the box closed soled with a radio set shown in dot and dash lines) packed therein;
' l rspective view of one of the members or partition liners;
lb i1 cushioning member. I
Referring: i n detail. to the drawing, 10 denotes an outer casino or shell of a packing and shipping hon eniliodying the invention which may have any desired shape or design and may he made otfihre hoard, card board or the like mate hut is preferably constructed of corru paper hoard, the cellular structure 0 W1 .reh has been found to perspective view 0t the top add greatly to the cushioning effect for the purposes described As seen in Fig. 1, the outer casing 10 is of collapsible construction and comprises elongated side Walls 11, end walisl2 and cover flaps 13, 14, and 16, all preferably formed from a single sheet of material, out,
creased and folded to form the rectangular shaped shell 10, the cover flaps being adapted to fold inwardly to form the top and bottom Walls for closing the casing. When the flaps are folded into their closed position, they may be held in place by any suitable means,
.as for example a strin of adl'iesive tape 1?.
Partition liners or cushioning members 18 are provided which are arranged against the side Walls, end Walls and the hot-tom. These may be substantially identical in con; struction, and as is seen mostclearly in Fig. 3, each is preferably fornied of: a single sheet of corrugated paperboard, out, creased and folded to form a rectanguiar shaped body portion 19, end walls 20 and side walls 21. said side Walls 21 having flap extensions 22 which are bent to extend wi hin and adjacent the end Walls 20 and held in position by suit-able fastening means. The flap extensions 22 or other fastenings for the side and end Walls to retain them in their relative positions may be. omitted if desired, since it is apparent that when the members 18 are assembled Within the casing 10 the structure is self-retaining. (See Fig 2.)
It will he understood that the shipping box is of suitable dimensions to enable paclo ing' the article or articles therein so as to substantially fill the space marked A in Fig. 2 and that the partition liners 18 are oi proper desi n to completely cover the interrier sides id bottom. of the casing 10 to As seen from Figs, 1 and 4: top cush-;.
ioning member 23 is preferably constructed of a single sheet of corrugated paper board,
cut, creased and folded to have a central rectangular shaped recessed portion 23 on one side of said member 23 and recessed channelled edge portions 23", 23, extending along the sides and ends respectively of the opposite side of said member 28. The cash ioning member 23 when inserted in the easing 10 as shown on Figs. 1 and 2 has its central portion positioned to accommodate projecting parts of the article to be packed therein and the upstanding side walls 23 of the portions 23* and Q3 serve to support and space the contents from the top of the asing.
In the practice of the invention, the side and end partition liners 18 are first placed in position in casing 10 and are held in their respective places l'rv means of the bottom liner 18 as clearl v shown in Figs' 1 and :2. Having arranged these liners in position with their body portions spaced inwardly from the various walls of the casing. the radio set or other article to be packed is then lowered into place the side wall of the set abutting against the walls of the liner 18 andbeing' spaced thereb a substantial distance from the walls of the casing 10. \Vith these parts in position. the cushioning member 23 is inserted in the top opening of the casingnvith the central recessed portion 23 thereof arranged to enclose the 'arious projecting' parts, the mcniber 23 being dimcn stoned to the proper height. to till the space between the top of the set and the top of the casing. The cover flaps are. then folded into position and the casing sealed in any suitable manne as by means of a strip of adhesive tape 17. s
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is -well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the aboveinventiion and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter therein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted.
as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent 1. A packing and shipping box comprising an outer casing"- having a separate'paith tion liner arranged therein for each of the sides, bottom and top walls of the. casing, said liners forming a supporting structure in the casing adapted to protect and cushion the enclosed contents against damage dnrin;;' transportation, at least one of said liners being formed of a single piece of material folded to have a central recessed portion adapted to accommodate projecting; parts of the contents, and longitudinally and transversely entendinc channel portions bordering said recessed portion. as and for the pur pose described and specified.
2. A packing and shipping box adapted to support the contents in spaced relation to the sides. at least one wall thereof having a cushioning member formed with a central.
recessed portion on one side thereof adapted to accommodate projecting parts of said contents. and channe led portions recessed from the opposite side of said member to extend along the edges of the latter outwardly from said central recessed portion. the side walls between the central recessed portion and said channelled portions adaptcd to support and space the contents from said all of the casing.
3. In a packing and shipping box. a cushionin; member constructed of a single sheet of material creased and folded to have a central rectangular shaped recessed portion on one side thereof adapted to accommodat projecting portions of the contents packed in said box. said member having: the edge portion. thereof bent and folded to form rccessed channels. the side walls between the central recessed portion and said channels adapted to support and space the contents from one wall of said box.
4. In a packing and shippin; box. a cushioning member construct-ed of a single sheet of material, creased and folded to have a. central rectangular shaped recessed portion on one side thereof adapted to accommodate projecting; portions of the contents packed in the box. and marginal recessed channelled portions on the opposite side of said recessed portion, the walls of the latter adapted to abut the contents packed in the'box where by said member serves to cushion and space said contents from one wall of said box.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
