Description

N. W. MCLEAN ET AL May 18 1926.
PEA SHELLING MACHINE Filed May 21, 1925 NORMAN "WILLIAM MCLEAN AND WILLIAM ALEXANDER KYLE, OF PALMERSTON NORTH, NEJV ZEALAND.
PEA-strutture ivinonnvn.
Application filed May 21,
lhis invention relates to a machine that has been devised for use in the shelling of green peas and it comprises a construction that allows for the pea pods being fed in between mangio-like rollers so that they burst and free the peas which fall on the front side of such rollers, while the pods or` shells are carried through by the rollers and delivered on the rear side thereof.
The machine designed is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which z- Figure l. is a side elevation, and
Figure 2 a front elevation thereof.
.liignre 3 is a sectional side elevation, and
Figure i a sectional front elevation.
The machine, as designed, comprises a base A of approved nature such as to adapt the machine for stable support upon any table or other surface, and if necessary, for clamping to such surface. Upon the base is fixed a pair of side frames B#B disposed to extend vertically at the necessary distance apart and covered in at the top by a cover plate C so as thereby to constitute the housing framework of the appliance, open at the front and back.
Fitted into the space between the side frames B are two rollers D'D disposed in parallel lines one above the other. Each of these is fixed upon a spindle E that passes out at each end through a vertical bearing slot F formed in that side of the frame. The spindle E of the lower roller D rests in the bottoms of the slots F on both sides so that it is supported to rotate therein. The upper roller D then rests with its periphery upon that of the lower` roller and its spindle eX tends loosely through the slots F so that while being free to rotate, it may also rise to an extent limited by the length of the slots, which length is substantially greater than the distance between the axes Vof the projecting spindle ends. The two rollers are kept normally in contact by the weight of the upper. roller resting on the lower.
The lower spindle E, at one end, has a 1anlr handle G fixed thereon to provide for ts turning and the two spindles are geared together by the gear wheels H So that by the rotation of the lower roller, both rollers will be positively driven, mangle fashion.
A feeding tray J is provided and shaped to extend in between the side frames B to a position close up to the point of contact between the rollers D-D- This tray is sup- 1923. Serial No. 640,540.
ported at its inner end upon Va long pin K that passes through and across between the side frames and through wings on the tray. This pin is capable of being withdrawn so that the tray may be removed when the machine is not in use. rllhe outer end of the tray may be continued for any desired distance to provide for a supply of pea pods being spread thereon, such outer end being then supported by any available means.
M is a chute or inclined table fixed between the frame members B to extend from beneath the lower roller D towards the front of the machine. N is a similar chute, or
inclined table, fixed to extend from beneath the roller D, to the rear of the machine.
The rollers D and D are made of rubber or lilre wear resisting and resilient material. In the operation of the machine therefore, the pea pods are fed down the tray J by one hand of the operator, while the rollers are turned by the other hand. The pods are fed, end on, between the two rollers so that they are gripped by the rollers and drawn in. |This pressure of the rollers on the pods causes them to split lengthwise along theirV seams thereby freeing the peas which fall on to the table M and run down it into any receptacle placed beneath. The shells are then carried through and fall on the rear tray N and gravitat-e down it into the requie site receptacle.
The manner of mounting the rollers, as described, will allow of the upper roller lifting to compensate for any extra feed between the rollers. At the same time the weight of this upper roller will be sufficient to cause the frictional grip required to feed the pods through.
Vile claim l. A small, portable pea. shelling machine, comprising a frame consisting of a base plate adapted to rest on a table or other support, two vertical side cheeks fixe-d at their lower ends thereto in spaced, parallel relation, and a cover plate extending across the upper ends of the cheeks and fixed to the same; coacting shelling rollers mounted in the space between said cheeks; an inclined feed tray extending into the frame between said cheeks and connected therewith, said tray terminating at its lower end adjacent said rollers; an inclined discharge chute for the shelled peas fixed between the cheeks to extend forwardly and downwardly from beneath the rollers; f india separare inclined discharge elinte for the Shells lined between saidelieelis to extendfdownwardly andiearwardly .from beneath said rollers.
2. A small, portable pea shelling machine, according to claim l, in which the inclined feed tray .is provided with perforated Wings at irs lower end, tliroughmT rielrnndi through registering perforatons in the cheeks a long supportngfpn is removably inserted, tlierel0 by to enable the Withdrawal of said pin and alle` removal of the tray when jdie machine is not' in use.
In testimony whereof, We aix our Signatures.
