Patented May 13, 1926a n stares KNIFE SHARPENER.
Application filed November 5, 1925. Serial No. 67,058.
The" object of the invention is so to construct the body of a knife sharpener that an efficient sharpening edge will be provided, novel means being supplied for holding the knife or other article to be sharpened, in proper relation to said edge.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. v
In the drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention,
' parts being in section, and parts being broken away; Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
The device forming the subject matter of this application comprises a body 1 made of any desired abrasive material, the body 1 being broken away in Figure 1, to indicate that the body may be of any preferred. length. The body 1 has longitudinal grooves 2, each groove being formed by a plane wall 3 and a concaved wall 1, the concaved wall defining a sharpening edge 5 at the periphery of the body 1. The body 1 has flat longitudinal surface 6 termi-- nated at the outer edge of the plane wall Sanddisposed opposite to the sharpening edge 5. Owing to the provision of the flat surface S, a knife or other article may be held in proper position so that it will be sharpened upon the edge 5, when the knife is drawn along the body 1. After the knife has been sharpened, to approximatelythe desired condition, the sharpening job may be finished by drawing the knife along the rounded. part 7 of the periphery of the body 1. As shown at 8, the body 1 tapers toward its free end, and, as indicated at 9, the grooves 2 and the flatsurface 6 diminish in width as they extend toward the outer end of the body 1.
The device comprises a handle 10 having a shank 11 which is threaded into the wider end of the body 1, although any suitable means may be provided for mounting the handle on the body 1 At the outer end of the handle 10 there is a ring 12 or any other suitable means whereby the tool may be bring up when not in use.
In order to guard the hand of an operator, an outstanding washer 1-5 is mounted on the shank 11 of the handle 10 and is bound between the end of the handl and the end of the body 1.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A sharpener of the class described, comprising a body having a longitudinal groove formed by plane and concaved walls, the concaved wall defining a longitudinal sharpening edge at the periphery of the body, the body having a flat longitudinal surface terminated at the outer edge of the plane wall and disposed opposite to the sharpening edge.
2. A sharpener of the class describec, comprising a body having a longitudinal groove formed by plane and concaved walls,
the eoncaved wall defining a longitudinal. sharpening edge at the periphery of the body, the body having a fiat Longitudinal surface terminated at the outer edge of the plane wall and disposed opposite to the sharpening edge, the body tapering toward one end, and the groove and the flat longitudinal surface diminishing in width toward said end of the body.
In testimony that I claim. the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature.
SAMUEL VVILLIAli f VVANATIK.
