The invention relates to the art of rolling sheet bar and primarily has for its object to provide a more simple, compact and efficiently operable means for removing scale and other defects from both the edges and flat surfaces of sheet bar being rolled hot than have heretofore been provided and by the use of whichit ispossible to roll the bar with a minimum of waste and at a proper rolling temperature, eliminating breakage of equipment and providing more perfect product and increasing commercial production.
The present practice in vogue seeks the removal of scale from sheet bar by holding the bar after leaving the blooming mill until it reaches a temperature of 1600O F., then entering it into the continuous rolls, then playing a stream of Water on said bar as it is passing through said rolls at a pressure of up to 90 pounds. This has a tendency to wash some of the scale olf the bar, but is not successful, and is very expensive because of great wear and breakage of the rolls occasioned because of the fact that they are caused to roll the bar considerably below proper rolling temperature. Also, an excessive amount of power,is required to drive the mill, and great expense is occasioned by the necessity of pumps and equipment for supplying the water.
By use of my present invention it is possible to efficiently remove rscale and other defects from both the surfaces and edges of the sheet bar while rolling the same at a` proper rolling temperature of about 1900o to 2000o F. and the necessity of water supply equipment and pumps is eliminated.
In carrying out my invention I provide particularly compact'and simply constructed surface scraper and edge scraper units mountable in combination one upon another or individually upon roll standards. Then used together in combination the units are supported oneupon or by the other and in a manner whereby they cooperate etiiciently for their intended purpose, also for holding parts of each other to oplerable position, and in a manner whereby t e edge scraper unit acts as aguide for guiding the sheet bar into the surface scraper unit.
lVith the above and other objects in View that will hereinafter appear,the invention still further resides `i`n the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts all of which will be first fully described, then be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:-

In carrying out the principles of my invention I provide two separable units, one a surface scraper unit, and the other an edge 'scraper unit. Either unit may be lndrvidu.-
ally mounted upon aset of roll standards in cooperative relation with the rolls thereof,
or. they may be mounted the other u on the one and together mounted upon t e roll standard. This latter adaptation is, of course, the most efficient and desirable as it eliminates the necessity of multiple mounting means, makes possible the use of but a single valve control set for both units, and
v standards therefor are indicated 2.
The main or supporting unit body is designated 3 and is of skeleton structure to reduce Weight, material used in manufacture, and principally to permit free pas sage of the sheet bar and the scale and surface defects removed therefrom. The whole front portion of the body is open and the rear wall 4 thereof is provided with a cross opening 5 to permit free passage of the sheet bar, and guide grooves 6 for removably supporting the removable bell mouth guide 7.
The body 3 is provided with lateral apertured ears 8 whereby the same may be properly secured to be supported by the roll standards 2 in the manner indicated in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
The body 3 is also provided with a pair of forwardly extending apertured ears 9,

and the walls thereof are hollowed as at 10 to provide suitable air or other fluid assage ducts, those at each side of said bo y communicating with the upper and lower pairs of pipe taps 11 and a sin le upper central tap 12 at each side'of said gody. t
Through the medium of the duct-provlded .securing posts 13 an actuator cylinder 14 is connected to communicate with each opposite set of tapscll. The cylinders are each provided with a suitable piston 15 and a pair of ducts, one communicating through a post 13 at one side and at a point beneath the piston, and the other communicating through the opposite post 13 with that side of the body and at a point above the piston.
The structure of these cylinder and post connections being disclosed in detail in my Patent #1,538,304, further detailed description thereof is thought to be unnecessary; see Fitgure 2. In this case, however, each side o the body is individual and both u per and lower sets of knives are movab and act in unison, that is, they move toward or from each other simultaneously. The manner of directing and controlling the actuating fluid for moving the pistons will be descrlbed later.
The body 3 is provided at each side with an upper and a lower air of guide and su porting ledges 16 an projecting from tie rear wall of the body, at each side, are upper and lower abutment and guide lugs 17.
The ledges 16 serve as guides and supports for the reversely positioned bar guide frames 18 illustrated in detail in Figures 12, 13 and 14 and shown mounted in Figure 6. The frames 18 are constructed to include side walls 19, grooved as at 20 to fit the guide ledges 16, and a cross web 2l joinin the side walls and curved at 22 to provi e a suitable guide surface for the passing sheet bar should it contact therewith. The rear ed es of the walls 19 are adapted to abut the ugs 17 of the housing body to effect the desired positioning of the frames.
When the surface scraper unit is to be used individually a front bell mouth body 23 is removably mounted in cooperation therewith. The body is constructed to include the flared 4bell mouth 24 surrounding the sheet,bar entrance opening 25, the upper part of the bell mouth being rounded upwardly, as at 26, and the side walls of the said bell mouth being provided with outwardly directed lugs 27, the purpose for which will later ap ear.
The body 23 is a so equipped with apertured ears 28, adapted to cooperate with the ears 9 in receivingr the removable pintles 29 which serve to hold the body 23 to position in the open font of the body 3, and abutment feet 30 adapted to abut the front edges of the frame side walls 19 to hold them to position within the said body 3.
To:` prevent too great wear of the side walls of the bell mouth 24 I provide a pair of wear plates 31 shaped to lie flatly against the said side Walls on the inside, and having extended Shanks 32, adapted to pass rearwardly through guide notches 33 provided at the sides of the opening 25 to receive them, and turned-back ears 34 bending back over the lugs 27 and tapped at 35 to receive set screws 36 for lengaging the lugs 27 for holding the plates securely in position. Obviously, should the platesbeeome worn the set screws 36 may be loosened and the plates withdrawn and replaced, the Shanks 32 passing freely through the notches It will be Observed by referencevto Figure 12 that the frames 18 are cut away at the inside corners as at 37 so that when the frames are in o erative position with the front and rear e ges thereof abutted by thel lugs 17 of the body '3 and the abutment feet 30 of the body 23, suitablevertical guide grooves are provided forguiding the vertical movemelt of the knife carriers 38 rei learriers'as at 42'. It will also beobserved by reference to Figure 6 that the abutment lugs' 17 and the. abutment feet 30 are not straight at their abutting edges but are otl`- set to eli'ecl a positioning of the upper set of knives slightly in advance of the lower set ofknives.
The second or edges scraping unit coniprises a body 43 grooved at 44 to provide knife-carrier guideways and centrallyaperturcd'to provide a suitable rectangular sheet bar passage 45. r1`he body is provided with an upper cross duct 46 and a lower cross duct 47, suitable taps being provided at each end of the body entering into the upper and lower ducts and which serve as means for attachment of the ducted posts 4S across n n `a pair of which at each body end 1s secured y a cylinder 49. The cylinders 49 are constructed in the same manner as the cylinders 14 hereinbefore describedy and are similarly provided with pistons 50 to which are connected the piston rods 51 which are in turn removably connected to the knifecarriers 5:2as at 53. The operation of these cylini'ders is relatively the same as that of the cylinders14 and will again be referred to later.
To provide for suitably mounting the body 4? the same is provided with upper and lower pairs of apertured rearwardly extending ears 54. When the ears 54 are suit ably positioned relatively to the ears 9 o-f the body Sand the pintles 29 are passed through the ears, as indicated in Figures 1f A' and 3, the body 43 will be suitably mounted cooperatively with and upon the vsurface scraper unit; It will 'be observed by reference to rFigure 1 that shim washers 55 may be inserted between the cooperating ears 9 and 54 to insure perfect alignment of the two units, the surface scraper and the edge scraper.
As the bell mouth body 23 must be removed to permit mounting Aof the edge scraper unit as above described, I provide a means for substituting the function ofthe feet 30 of that body.
For this purpose, upper and lower cross angle irons 56 are provided. The angles 56 are suitably apertured to permit passage therethrough of the pintles 29 and the lower one thereof is adapted to rest 'on the lower ones of the ears 9. Cleats 57 are screw secured as at 58 to the angles 56 in position and shaped for being presented against the frames 18to substitute the function of the feet 30 in holding said frames tov position within the body 3.
To cooperate with the groove 44 to complete the guides for the knife carriers 52, plates 59 are provided and secured as at 60 to the front face of the housing 48. in the manner indicated in Figures 2 and 3.

The knife carriers 52 are provided with opposite cut out portions 63 and the plate 5S) are provided with pairs of opposite cut out portions 64 corresponding relatively in size with the projections formed by the provision of the cut out portions 63 so that when the knives have been retracted to the position indicated in Figure 2, and by reason of the removable connection 53 between carriers and piston rods, the said knives and carriers may be bodily withdrawn without removing any nuts or bolts.
The bell mouth members secured to'the housing body are also cut ont as at 65 to permit inward movement of the knives 66 secured to the carriers 52 as at 67 when such knives are adjusted far enough in to necessitate such provision. rlhe knives 66 are notched at 68 to suitably' engage the edge of the sheet bar for the intended purpose. K,
The edge se per housing body 43 is provided at its upper edge with two pipe taps 69, one communicating directly with the upper cross duct 46, and the other, through the' side duct 70 provided at one side of the body for that purpose, with the lower duct 47.
-l/Vhen the units are used in cooperation, as indicated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, it is to be understood, of course, that if the upper' duct 46 is connected to communicate with the tops of the cylinders 49 the lower duct 'will be in communication with the lower ends of such cylinders. Likewise., the ducts 10 at each side of the housing body 3 are individual and if those at one side are connected in communication with the tops of the cylinders 14, those at the other side will be in communication with the lower ends of such cylinders. Y
A conduit pipe 7l is connected, say for example, With the cylinder top communicating ducts of boththe body 43 and the body 3 through the piping connections 72, and another conduit pipe 7?) is connected, through the piping connect-ions 74, with the cylinder bottoms communicating ducts of both such bodies.
Thus all of t-he ducts communicating into the tops of the cylinders above their pistons arev connected in communication with each other and one' conduit pipe 71, and all of the ducts communicating into the bottoms of the cylinders beneath the cylinders thereof are connected with each other and the other conduit pipe 73.
For operating the'pistons of the cylinders to force or retract the knives connected therewith, the conduit pipes 71 and 73 may be connected, as indicated in Figure 15, to a suitable four-way valve 75 having an ex- 36 tinct units one to scrape the Aupper and lower l hausting connection 76 and suitable connection with a fluid pressure conduit pi e 77 having a pressure gauge 78 at its en A. main Huid pressure supply pipe 79 is provided and is connected by T couplings and laterals 80 and 81 with the pressure conduit pipe 77.
A pressure reducing valve 82 is spllced in the lateral 80 and a cut-off valve 83 is positioned at each side thereof so that the said valve may be cut out and full pressure passage of air direct through the lateral 81 permitted when desired.` The pipe 79 has a cut-off valve 84 between the laterals 80 and 81 so that the lateral 81 may be cut out when lateral 80 is to be used. The pipe 79 may also be provided with a cleaner plug 85 and an air screen 86, if desired.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the novel details of construction, manner of operation and advantages of my invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which it relates.
What I claim is:
l. An apparatus for removing surface defects from sheet bar, comprising two dissurfaces and one to scrape the edges of the sheet bar, means for mounting detachably one of said units on the other, means for mounting said other unit on the frame of a rolling mill, and means for operating said.
units simultaneously.
2. An apparatus for removing surface defects from sheet bar, comprising two distinct units one to scrape the upper and lower surfaces and one to scrape the edges of the sheet bar, means for mounting detachably one of said units on the other, means for mounting said other unit on ythe frame of a rolling mill, each said unit including a set of scraping knives and operating cylinders and pistons therefor, and a single control means to effect the operation of both units.
3. An apparatus for removing surface de-A fects from sheet bar, comprising an upper and lower surface scraper unit` and means mountable on said unit for guiding the sheet bar into the unit, saidfmeans also including scraper elements operable for scraping the edges of the sheet bar. l
4. An apparatus for removing surface defects from sheet bar, comprising an upper and lower surface scraper unit, and means mountable on said unit for guiding the sheet bar into the unit, said scraper unit and said guiding means each including a setof scraping knives and operating pistons therefor,- those carried by said guiding means being positioned for scra ing the edges of the sheet bar, and a sing e control means to effect the operation of both sets.
5. An apparatus for removing surface defects from sheet bar, comprising two distinct units one to scrape the upper and lower surfaces and one to scrape the edges of the sheet bar, said surface scraping unit having removable scraper knives and sheet bar guide members, means for mounting detachably one of said units on the other, means mountable between the units for holding the removable members to position, means for mounting said other unit on the frame of a rolling mill, and means for operating both units simultaneously.
6. An apparatus for removing surface defects from sheet bar, comprising an upper and lower surface scraper unit, and means mountable on said unit for guiding the sheet bar into the unit, said scraper unit and said guiding means each including a set of scraping knives and operating pistons therefor, those carried by the guiding means being positioned for scraping the edges ofthe sheet bar, knives and sheet bar guiding frames removably mounted in the scraper unit, means mountable between the scraper' unit and the guiding means for holding the guiding frames to position, and a single control means to effect the operation of both knife sets.
7. 'An apparatus for removing surface defects from sheet bar, comprising an upper and lower surface scraper unit, and means mountable on said unit for guiding the sheet bar into the unit, and scraper unit and said guiding means each including a set of scraping knives and operating pistons therefor, those carried by the guiding means being positioned for scraping the edges of the sheet bar, knives and sheet bar guiding frames removably mounted in the scraper unit, means including cross angle irons and vertical cleats mountable between the scraper unit and the guiding means for holding the guiding frames to position and a single control means to effect the operation of both knife sets.
8. In apparatus of the class described, a housing body having an open front, a bar passage opening in the rear, horizontal frame guide ledges, and frame abutment feet; guide frames removably mounted in the body on the ledges thereof; scraper elements guided by the frames; a bell-mouth guide body removably mountable in the open front of the body and having feet for engaging the guide frames to hold them to position; and means for moving the scraper elements.
9. In apparatus of the class described, a housing body having an open front, a bar passage opening in the rear, horizontal frame guide ledges, and frame abutment feet; guide frames removably mounted in the body on the ledges thereof; scraper elements guided by the frames; a bell-mouth guide body removably mountable in the open front of the body and having feet for engaging the guide frames to hold them to position against the abutment feet ofthe housing body; said frames having corner notches for cooperating with the abutment feet of t-lie housing body and the feet of the bell-mouth guide body in providing guideways for the scraper elements; and means for moving the scraper elements.
10. In apparatus of the class described, a housing body having an open front, a bar passage opening in the rear, horizontal Vframe guide ledges, and frame abutment feet; guide frames removably .mounted in the body on the ledges thereof; scraper elements guided by the frame; a bell-mouth guide body removably mountable in the open front of the body and having feet for en-' gaging the guide frames to hold them to position; wear plates removably mounted at the sides of the bell-mouthguide body; and means for moving the scraper elements.
11. In apparatus of the class described, a housing body having an open front, a bar passage opening in the rear, horizontal frame guide ledges, and frame abutment feet; guide frames removably mounted in the body on the ledges thereof; scraper elements guided bythe frame; a bell-mouth guide body removably mountable in the open front of the body and having feet for engaging the guide frames to hold them to position; wear plates removably mounted at the sides of the bell-mouth guide body; said wear plates having extended Shanks and turned back ears; set screws passing through the ears and engaging the said guide body for securing the plates to position; said guide body having notches for receiving the extended Shanks; and means for moving the scraper elements.
12. Inapparatus of the class described; a housing body having an open front, a sheet bar passage opening in the rear, horizontal frame guide ledges, and frame abutment feet; guide frames removably mounted in r the body on the ledges thereof; pairs of scraper elements guided bythe frames; each said frame having a sheet bar guiding cross web positioned between each pair of scraper elements; and means Jfor moving the scraper elements.'
13. In apparatus of the class described, a
housing body having an open front, a bar passage opening in the rear, horizontal guide ledges, frame abutment feet, lateral apertured ears to facilitate mounting on a rolling elements guided by the frames; a bell-mouth guide body mountable in the open front of the body and having feet for engaging the guide frames to hold them to posit-ion on the ledges and against the abutment feet and sheet bar passage opening in the rear, horizontal frame guide ledges, and frame abutment feet; guide frames removably mounted in the body on the ledges thereof; pairs of scraper elements guided by the frames; cach said frame having a sheet bar I,guiding cross web positioned between each pair ot' scraper elements; a bell-mouth guide body mountable in the` open front of the body and having feet ior engaging the guide frames to hold them to position on the ledges and against the abutment feet and apertured ears cooperative .with the .for- Wardly extendedv ones of the housing body in reinovably'receiving pintles for holding the guide body to position in the open housing front; each said frame also having notched corners for cooperating with the abutment feetof the housing body and the `feet of the bell-moutli guide body in providing guideways for the scraper elements; and means'for moving the scraper elements.
15. An apparatus for `removing surface defects from sheet bar, comprising two distinct units one to scrape the upper and lower surfaces and one yto scrape the edges of the sheet bar, said surface scraping unit including a housing body having lateral apsecuring pintles for holding the bodies to getlier in cooperative relation and a bellmouth provided sheet bar guideway, each said unit including -a set of scraping knives and opera-ting cylinders and pistons therefor, and a. singlecontrol means to effect the operation of both units.

In apparatus of the class described an edge scraper unit comprising a body having a sheet bar passageway therethrough and transverse grooves forming guideways, {iared bell-mouth members secured to the front face of the body centrall of the passageway, the upper one thereo curving upwardly and engaging said body, scraper knives movable in the guideways, and means for moving the knives.

In apparatus of the class described an edge scraper unit comprising a body having a sheet bar passageway therethrough and transverse grooves forming guideways, ared bell-mouth members secured to the front face of the body centrally of the passageway, notched scraper knives movable in carriers, and meansV for moving the carriers in opposition.

In apparatus of the class described, an edge scraper unit comprising a body having a sheet bar passageway therethrough and transverse grooves forming guideways, flared bell-mouth members secured to the front face of the body centrall of the passageway, the upper one thereofy curving upwardly and engaging said body, scraper knives movable in the uideways, means for moving the knives, said body having 'supporting ears at the rear, and means associated with said supporting ears for mounting said body on a suitable support.
22. In apparatus of the class described, an edge scraper unit comprising a body having a sheet bar passageway therethrough and transverse grooves forming guideways, flared bell-mouth members secured to the front iace of the body centrally of the passageway, the upper one thereof curving upwardly and engaging said body, scraper knives movable in the uideways, means for moving the knives, said body having supporting ears at the rea-r, means'assoclated with said sup orting ears for mounting said body o n a suitable su port, said associated means comprising ang e brackets adapted to be secured to the frame 'of a rolling mill and pintles connecting said body to said brackets.
