JOSEPH ID. THOMAS, OF PAWHUSKA, OKLAHQMA, ASSIGNOR T0 LOUISE THOMAS, 013
ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
GARMENT HANGER.
Application filed August a, 1923. Serial No. 656,544.
My invention relates to garment hangers and more particularly to garment hangers adapted to support mens suits.
The objects of my invention are to provide a new and improved garment hanger which is simple and may be easily and cheaply manufactured; to provide a garment hanger for mens suits which supports the trousers by engaging the lower ends of the legs thereof, thereby obviating the transverse creases made when the trousers are supported near the middle of the legs thereof; and to provide a garment hanger which will stretch the lower ends of the legs of the trousers supported thereby so as to maintain the creases in the trousers.
A practical embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein similar letters are used to designate similar parts. Fig. l is a perspective of my improved garment hanger; Figs. 2 and 3 are views showing the trousers hanger inserted in the lower ends of the legs of a pair of trousers.
Referring to the figures, the garment hanger comprises a pair oftrousers hangers A and the coat hanger E. The trousers hangers A are preferably formed with substantially flat body portions having the nonparallel sides a. The coat hanger E may be formed in any desirable shape, but it is preferably made to follow the general contour, shown in Fig. 1. Both the trousers hangers A and the coat hanger E may be manufactured from any material but they are preferably made of thin wooden board or heavy cardboard. If cardboard is used it must be rigid and strong enough to support the weight of the garments. The trousers hangers are provided at their upper ends with the holes C through which the hook D formed on the face of the coat hanger E may be inserted whereby the trousers hangers may be supported by the coat hanger. A hole is provided near the upper edge of the coat hanger E so that the hanger may be hung on a hook in a closet or other suitable place.
The sides of the trousers hangers A taper inwardly from the top to the bottom of said trousers hangers, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The width of the lower ends of the trousers hangers A is less than the width of the lower end of the trousers legs B, which the hanger is adapted to support, and the width of the upper ends of the hangers is greater than the width of the lower end of the trousers legs. When a pair of trousers is to be mounted on the hangers A the lower end of one of the hangers is inserted into the lower end of a trousers leg B, preferably the front and back creases in the trousers leg are registered with the sides a of the hanger, and is forced into the lower end of the trousers leg until the tapering sides a have engaged the sides of the lower end of the trousers leg. The hanger A is entered into the trousers leg B with enough force to wedge the lower end of the leg firmly against the sides a, thereby assuring that the trousers leg will not slip ofl the hanger and also stretching the leg of the trousers to maintain the creases therein. One of the trousers hangers A is used for each leg of the trousers, as shown in Fig. 3. hen the trousers are supported by the hangers A, in the manner above described, the hanger may be hung upon the hook D of the coat hanger E or may be hung upon any suitable nail or hook if it is desired to support trousers separate from a coat.
I do not intend to limit my invention to the exact embodiment of my improvement in garment hangers shown in the drawings, because the details of construction may be varied within wide limits without deviating from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a garment hanger the combination of a coat hanger and a trouser hanger, said coat hanger having upper sloping edges for the support of a coat and engaging means whereby it may be hung in a suitable place, and having also a single supporting means for said trouser hanger positioned in substantially vertical alignment with said engaging means, said trouser hanger comprising a pair of members formed of substan tially rigid material each of which has its lower end adapted to enter a trouser leg and having its side edges sloping outwardly and upwardly at such. an angle that the member when forced into the open lower end of a trouser leg will support said leg thereon by friction, and each of said members being provided with means adapted to engage said supporting means on said coat hanger.
2. In a garment hanger the combination of a coat hanger and a trouser hanger, said coat hanger having upper sloping edges for the support of a coat and engaginv means whereby it may be hung in a suit'a Te place, and having also a hook for saidtr'ouser hanger positioned in substantially vertical alignment with said engaging means, said trouser hanger comprising a pair offiat substantially rigid members each of which has its lower end adapted to enter a trouser leg and having its side edges sloping outwardly and upwardly at such an angle that the member When forced into the open lower end of a trouser leg will support said leg thereon by friction, and each of said members being provided with a hole at substantially the middleof its upper end adapted to engage said hook.
In witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOSEPH D. THOMAS.
