E. W. CUMMINGS FOLDING WALL FIXTURE Filed Oct. 7, 1924 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Patented May 4, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EABLE W. CUMMINGS, OF SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR O1! ONE-HALF TO SANTA BARBARA LUMBER COMPANY, OF SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA, A COR- PORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
FOLDING WALL FIXTURE.
Application filed October 7, 1924. Serial No. 748,148.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARLE W. CUMMINcs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Barbara, county of Santa Barbara,
I State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Wall Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object a unitary l combination of parts to form a table, and ironing board, bench or seat, or the like, or other horizontal service board structure adapted to be folded into the wall of a room or outfolded into the room for use By referring to the accompanying drawings my invention will be made clear.
Figs. 1 and 2 are perspective views of the table and right'and left side seatsembodying my invention and shown with the table outfolded in Fig. 1 and in the collapsed or closed position within the wall in Fig. 2. The outer portion of the table forms a wall panel when closed and a complete table structure supported and locked when outfolded.
Fig. 3isa cross section of a folding table structure in accordancewith my invention adapted to be positioned between the studding of a conventional wall with the parts 80 shown in their collapsed position.
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic showing of the parts of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is similar to Fig. 4 but with the parts partly outfolded.
ll Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic showing of the parts outfolded into a position of use into the room.
Throughout the figures similar numerals refer to identical parts.
The table consists of two members 1 and 2 respectively, member 1 being in effect a. wall panel hinged to the member 2 at 3, in its outfolded position it is supported by the folding strut composed of the two parts 5 and 6. The part 5 is hinged to a fixed wall portion at 7 and ,part 6 is hinged to the member 2 at 8. The two parts are hinged together at 9.
At 10 and 11 are shown the two links of a toggle strut hinged together at 13. The link 11 being hinged to the part 6 at 14 and the link 10 hinged to the member 2 at 15.
At 16 is a cantilever arm hinged to the link 10 at 17 and extendin through the U-shaped bracket 18 fixed rigi l on the member 2. The member 2 is hinge at 19 to the sides of the rigid wall structure 20 in the same manner as the hinge 7. When the parts are outfolded, members 1 and 2 form a straight line horizontal table extending into the room, supported by the strut formed of the two parts 5 and 6, which are now aligned with each other and form a ri 'd com ression strut from the fixed pivota point to the outward end of the member 2. 65
The toggle links 10 and 11 inthe outfolded position of Figs. 1 and 6 are in alignment and brace the aforementioned strut against collapse and the cantilever arm 16 extends through the strut 6 and bracket 18 as shown in Figure 1 and its outer end contacts with and supports the member 1 a ainst downward gressure as indicated by t e arrow 21 in igure 6. The arm 16 is'now a cantilever supported by the bracket 18 and the pivot 17 on the link 10, and in turn supporting member 1 against downward pressure.
When the parts are folded within the wall space the member 1 forms a panel closin the said space and presenting a finished we 1 appearance.
The panels 30 and 31 of Figs. 1 and 2 indicate enches and are constructed in the same manner as the table but of suitable dimensions for use as seats on each side of the table.
I claim:
1. A foldin wall fixture comprising a laterally extensible service board consisting of a member hinged at one end to a rigid frame for folding thereinto and an outer member hinged at one end of the first named member for folding thereon, a two part hinged strut hinged to the frame and to the first named member, a toggle link hinged to the first named member and to one part of the toggle link, and a cantilever arm ivoted at one end to the to gle and supporte between its ends on a fu crum secured to the first named member and with its other end free and adapted to contact with the under side of the outer member when the fixture is extended.
2. A folding service board of two parts, one part being hinged to a rigid support for swinging from a vertical to a horizontal p0- sition, and an outer art hinged end to end the under side of the outer part against to the first mentione part for foldin theredownward pressure when the two parts are on, folding bracing elements under t e first horizontally extended. 1
mentioned part hinged to the same and to 3. A structure as specified in claim 2 in 5 a rigid support, and a cantilever sup orted which said cantilever extends between spaced jointly by t e first mentioned part an bracmembers of said folding bracing elements.
mg elements having a free end supporting EARLE W. CUMMINGS.
