To 'all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SAxoN, a citizen of the Unitcd- States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing presses.
In multi-color work it is absolutely essential that perfect register is obtained for the reason that a sheet of material receiving the impression in dierent colors must be run through the press a plurality of times, de-
g pending upon the number of different colors used. If register is not perfect the colors will overlap, thereby ruining the work. The movement of the type bed has considerable to do with registering, that is to say, if the type bed were permitted any lateral shifting movement the colors would overlap each other and spoil the work.
Heretofore in the vertical type of printing press similar to that illustrated herein, the type bed has been given a vertical reciprocatory movement from a crank shaft through a single centrally arranged connecting rod. By using such a single -connecting rod there is a possibility of the type bed slightly moving or angling out of its proper aligned position, resulting in bad register, as mentioned hereinabove..
Again, with the use of the single central connecting rod for transmitting vertical reciprocatory movement to the type bed, it is structurally impossible to mount a pile delivery table which is capable of lowering in a vertical line as it receives impressed material unless such table is moved rearwardly of the press an excessive amount, which would make necessary an excessive throw or movement of the delivery grippers. The throw of such grippers is to be limited as much as possible, especially for high speed work of the nature to be accomplished by a press of the type herein disclosed.
Accordingly, one object of this invention is to provide simple, eicient and reliable driving mechanism for the type bed whereby the latter may be maintained in proper alignment to facilitate good registering action.
Another object is to provide driving mechanism for the type bed which will permit the use of a pile delivery table capable of downward vertical movement als it receives impressed material and in close proximity to the bed, thereby reducing the throw of the delivery grippers.
These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on the accompanying sheets of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary' side elevation of a vertical printing press embodying my mvention; and
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the-same, some of the parts being shown in section.
The various novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings, and will be parti'cularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the gures of the drawings, it will be noted that I have disclosed my invention in connectionwith a vertical type of printing press including a main frame 10 and a way frame 11 in which the type bed 12 and vthe cylinder frame 13 are given simultaneous vertical reciprocatory movements in opposite directions. In this connection the type bed has associated therewith a rack 14 and the cylinder frame has connected therewith a rack 15, both of which racks mesh with a rotary but otherwise stationary gear 16. The driving power is received from a crank shaft 17 mounted in pedestals 18 formed integrally with the main frame 10 of the press. Said shaft 17, as shown, has two cranks 18 to the outer end of each of which is pivotally connected connecting rods 19, which rods in turn are connected to pins 20 mounted in brackets 21 secured to the type bed 12. In this connection it will be noted that the connecting rods 19 are spaced the maximum distance apart permissible and still'maintain the connecting rods in proper position and within the coniines of the frame of the press. These connecting rods are operatively connected to points near the outer sides of the type bed 12 so that as the type bed is reciprocated back and forth in a vertical direction, the typebed 12 is maintained in proper alignment,- as distinguished from any laterai skewing or angling movement. However, by means of the double connecting rod arrangement shown, the type bed is reciprocated back and forth in a vertical direction in perfect alignment, so that register, so far as the type bed is concerned, will be perfect.
Again, by spacing the connecting rods 19 a maximum distance apart provision is made for receiving thepile delivery table 22 therebetween, so that such table may lie in close proximity and directly in the rear of the type bed l2. Such arrangement also permits of the use of a pile delivery table which may lower in a -vertical line automatically in accordance with material piled thereon, and still leave all the necessary clearance.`
By thus being able to place the pile delivery table directly adjacent and to the rear of the type bed 12, the throw of the delivery gripper arms 23 is greatly reduced,
which increases the output of the machine for a. given speed.
It is my intention to cover all modifications of the invention falling within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a vertical type of printing ress, the combination of a type bed, a pi e de liver table to the rear of said bed, a driving mem er, and connecting rods operatively connecting said type bed and driving member and spaced apart for accommodating said pile delivery table as it is lowered between said connecting rods directly in the rear of said type bed.
2. In a vertical typev of printing press, the combination of a type bed, a pile delivery table to the rear of said bed, a driving member, and ower transmission members connecting said) type bed and driving member and spaced apart to accommodate said pile delivery table as it is lowered between said transmission members directly in the rear of said type bed.
