SAFETY ZOB.
Application led March 31, 1925. Serial No. 19,583.
To/LZZ whom t may concern: Be it known that l, lnviNG SMITra, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Winsted, county of Litchfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Safety Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to razors, and more particularly to a safety razor having a thm fla-t handle arranged obliquely to the edge of the blade so that the correct diagonal shaving stroke will be easily obtained by the user. The object of this invention is .to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manu; facture, easy vto manipulate, ornamental in appearance, and very efficient and durable 1n use.
`With these and 'other objects in view there have been illustrated -on the acompanymg drawings, several forms in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.

the lower part of a modified third form of the invention.

spectively of one form o razor blade adapted to be used with either of the three aboveillustrated forms of safetyi razor.
Figs. 13 and 14 are top views of two modifiedwforms of razor blade.
Fig. 15 is a top View of a modified form of guard member adapted for ruse withany of the above-illustrated forms of safety razor.

Fig. 17 is a top view of another modified form ofv guard member.
Figs. 18 and 19 are-top and end views respectively of a modified form of clamping plate to be used with the guard member shown infFigs. 15 and 16.v
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several` views, theinumeral 20, Figs. 1 and 2, indicates a clamping plate for a razor blade 27, said clamping plate and razor blade `being in the form of oblique parallelograms. The clamping plate has curved upper and lower faces, and is provided with a pair of end pins 21 and 22 and a central upstanding tapped post 23.
"The postl 23 has an enlarged base' section 24 with parallel Hat side faces, and above said base sectionl24f the post 23 has a reduced section with flat side faces 25 and 26, said faces y being parallelto the ends of the clamping plate 20.l
The razor blade 27 has a pair of end 'apen 28 which has rows of teeth 29 and 30 on its opposite sides.
'clamping plate 20 and blade 27 and is held against said blade by means of a screw rod 31 passing through the interior of 'a handle 32. i
fiat parallel opposite side faces 35 and 36,
The guard member 28 hasv the same oblique parallelogram shape as the andis non-rotatively held at an oblique angle to the sides ofthe blade and parallel to the ends of said blade, said angle being such that in shaving, it will be easy for the user .toobtain the correct diagonal stroke across tures adapted to lit. over ,the pins 21 and a l central aperture to )surround'the post 23, said blade being covered by a guard member the face. The inner end of the handle 32 is pravided with a'slot 37 having curved ends and at sides and adapted to fit over ,the ends and sides of the post 23.
By means of this construct-ion, when the screw rod 31 is screwed into the post 23, the handle member 32 will be forced down upon 'the guard member 28, which .in turn will press the blade 27 upon the clamping plate 20.
In Figs. 5 to 9 a. modified second form of the invention is illustrated. This form of safety razor comprises a clamping plate 38 havingy the same oblique parallelogram shape as in the first form, and having end pins 39 and 40 identical with the pins 21 and 22 of the first form. The clamping plate 38 is provided with an upstanding post 41 threaded on its exterior at 42v and having a reduced tongue 43 at its top portion, said tongue havingfiat sides 44 and 45 parallel to the ends of said clamping A guard member 46 anda blade 47, which are identical with the guard member 28 and blade 27 of the first form of razor shown in Figs. 1 to 4, are adapted to be held upon the clamping plate 38 by means of a swivel collar 48, as most clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 9. The swivel collar 48 is preferably knurled on its exterior and has an inwardly directed lug 49 at its top adapted to fit loosely within an annular slot 50 in a flat handle member 51, said handle member 51 having fiat sides 52 and 53 parallel to the ends of the clamping plate, as in the first illustrated form of 'the invention.
.In order to hold the handle rigidly in its correct angular Josition with respect to the blade, the hand e 51 is provided with a slot 54 adapted to fit snugly over the fiat tongue 43 of the bed post.
A still further modified third form of the invention is shown lin Fi 10. This form of razor is identical ywit the forms shown in Figs. 5 to 9, except that the bottom of the handle is provided with a flat tongue 55 and the center post of the clamping plate is provided with a slot 56 fitting over said tongue 55 for holding the handle 57 at the correct oblique position.
In Figs. 11 to 14, three modified forms of razor blade are illustrated. In each form, the blade is in the shape of an oblique parallelogram correspondingto the shape of the clamping plate as shown in Figs. 3 and 7.
In the Iform shown in Fig. 11,' the blade is provided Vwith a pair of end apertures 58 and 59 for fitting over the end `pins of the clamping plates, and said blade has a central aperture 60, the latter having the shape of an oblique parallelogram with its sides parallel tothe ends of the blade. The central aperture is adapted .to fit snugly `guard member is shown.
over the center osts of any one of the is provided ywith a cross shaped hole 61, the ends of which communicate with central side - arms 62 and 63 thereof.
The form of blade shown inFig. 14 is identical tothat shown`in Fig. 11 except that the central post aperture 64 is made 1n the shape of an ellipse.
In- Figs. 15 and 16 a modified form of In this form of' guard member, a pair of longitudinal ribs 65 and 66 are struck up from the base of.
the guard member to provide a pair of grooves to fit over a pair of ribs 67 and 68 extendmg outl from each side of a tapped .post 69 which projects up from a clamping plate70, as clearly shown in Figs. 15',
18, and 19. It will be understood that the modified forms of gua-rd member and clamping plate shown in Figs. 15, 18, and 19 may be employed interchangeably in any of the three illustrated forms of razor.
In Fig. 17 a still further modified form of guard member 71 is illustrated. This form of guard member has a cross-shaped hole 72 similar to the hole 6110i?. the blade shown in Fig. 13.
The guard member 71 is especially adapt-4 ed for use with the clamping plate 70 shown ,in Fig. 18, but it may also be used with the other illustrated forms of clamping plate within the general spirit and scope of the invention.
While there 4have been disclosed in this specification several forms in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that these forms are shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is 'not to be limited to the specific disclosures 4but may be modified and embodied in various other forms'without departing from its spirit. In short, the in# venti'on includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
