Description

March 30 1926.
R. E. SOMMERS HAND BAG CONSTI'RUQTI'ON Filed Sept. 30 D 1925 Patented Mar. 30, 1926.
1 UNITED STATES PATENT mes.
ROBERT E. SOMMERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMMEL-& ISAACS, INC
OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
HAND-BAG CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed September 30, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. SOMMERS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Bag Qonstruction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and im proved hand bag construction.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a new and improved connection between the handle of the hand bag and the body thereof.
Another object of my invention is to provide a connection as above described which can be applied very simply and economically and which will be very durable and impose no strain whatever upon the leather or other material of which the hand bag is made.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof, it being understood that the above general-statement of the objects of my invention is intended to generally illustrate the same and not to limit it in any manner.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation with the cover of the hand bag shown in the closed position. Fig. 2 is a side view, the cover being shown in the partially open position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the cover of the hand bag in the open and rearwardly inclined position.
Fig. 4: is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the holding bar.
Fig. 6 is a top View showing one end of the holding bar. The hand bag is provided with a body 1 of any ordinary type and which can be made of leather or any other suitable and preferably fleXible material. The cover 7 of the hand bag is preferably made integral with the body portion 1, although this is not essential to my invention, so that the usual flexible and bendable connection is provided between the body 1 and the cover 7 by reason of the fact that the material is readily bendable at the line of junction between the cover and the said body portion.
Serial N 0. 59,745.
As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the cover 7 is connected to the body portion 1 by a zone or portion of the material which is substantially horizontal when the cover is in the closed position and the snap fastener head 8 thereof engages the snap fastener socket 9 secured to the body portionl.
is bent to provide the upstanding ears 4 and V 5 and the bar B is then bent to provide end portions 2 and 3 which are substantially parallel to the main body portion of the bar B.
The end portions 2 and 3 may be connected to the main body portion of the bar B by means of suitable rivets.
In assembling the junction strip 10 and the bar B, the end portions 2 and 3 are bent down so that the said junction strip 10 is tightly clamped between the main body portion of the bar B and the end portions 2 and 3 thereof. I
It is obvious that the weight of the bag is taken up by the bar B so that little or no strain is imposed upon the material of the bag and there is no danger of the bar being loosened from the bag.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions could be made without departing from its spirit.
I claim:
1. A hand bag having a cover member connected to the body thereof, and a bar having a main bar portion located at the underside of said cover member and having ends projecting beyond the ends of said cover member, said projecting ends being formed into outer upstanding eye portions and outer terminal portions extending between the ends of said cover member.
2. A hand bag having a cover member connected to the body thereof, and a bar having a main bar portion located at the underside of said cover member and having ends projecting beyond the ends of said cover member, said projecting ends being formed into outer upstanding eye portions and outer terminal portions extending between the ends of said cover member, said outer terminal portions being substantially paraiiei to said main bar portions, the said main bar portion and said outer terminal portions being adapted to clamp the cover member between them.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ROBERT E. SUMMERS.
