UNIVERSAL PLATE-ROLLING MILL.
Application filed March 21, 1924.- Serial No, 700,852.
7 '0 all whom it 72mg concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS EDMUND HOLMES, a British sub ect, and a resident oi Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful IIDPIOVQIRBDtS lD Conner tion with Universal Plate-Rolling Mills, of whlch the following is the specification.
The invention relates to plate-rolling mills of socalled universal typethat is to say, mills lIl WlllCll in addition to the usual horizontalrolls operating upon the surface ot the plate, there are vertical rolls operating upon its edges. These vertical rolls are laterall adjustable for various widths of plate, and hithertothey have been driven by bevel or equivalent gear, the final pinion of which is fast on or permanently coaxial with the roll. This arrangement has rendered it necessary to provide for the axial adjustment of the next pinion along with the, lateral adjustment of the rollsan arrangement unsound in practice and leading to rapid wear of the gearing. Furthermore, the arrangement limits the size of gear wheels employable, as the lateral distance between centres must coincide with the lateral distance be tween the rolls axes, and this is small when narrow plates are being handled. v
The invention has for its object to overcome these disabilities.
According to the invention the vertical rolls of mills of this type are each driven by a. universally jointed shaft from avertical shaft above the rolland which is carried in bem'ings in the housing and is not laterally movable. This vertical shaft is driven by any convenient gearing and' either directly or indirectly. Very conveniently, it may be driven by gearing from a vertical shaft lying parallel with it and which in turn is driven by bevel or equivalent gearing from one of the horizontal mill shafts.
ihe interposition otthe universally jointed shaft between the roll. and its driving means permits oil the driving means to he stationary while the rollis laterally adj usted, and thus obviates the necessity-for sliding pinions. Moreover,1nore particularly when the drive is transmitted through a parallel shaft, it permits or the bevel or, equivalent gearing being of any convenient and greatersize and strength. i
Anillustrative example of the invention is shown on two accompanying sheets of explanatory drawings in which igure 1 is a side elevation of part of a rolling mill and Figure 2 a part view in sectional elevation.
In this example the usual laterally adjust able v'erticalrolls A arranged as usual adjacently to the horizontal rolls 0, are connected by universal joints A? to vertical shafts A which are carried in fixed bearings A", A 'in the housing A; Secured to these shaftsare pinions A which are driven by pinions B secured to verticalshatts 13 carried in fixed bearings B B in the housing A. To the lower end of'these shafts B there are secured bevel wheels B which gear with and are driven by bevel wheels secured to one of the horizontal mill shafts B j l'V hat I claim is In a universal plate rolling mill including f a horizontal roll shaft, laterally adjustable vertical rolls, vertical roll shatts, one shaft for each roll, above said rolls,.said vertical shafts rotatable in lined bearings, universal couplings detachahly connecting the .lower' ends ot'said verticalsha'fts to the upper ends ot sald rolls, pinions on said verticalshafts.
.pinions meshing with'the first mentioned pinions, vertical pinion sha its carrying the second mentioned pinious, bevel. wheels on 7 said pinion shafts, each hovel pinion located at a level intermediate the upper end of the corresponding roll and the lower end oi its roll shaft, and bevel wheels facing one another 'oirsaid horizontal roll shaft meshingv with said first mentioned bevel wheels.
In testii'nouy whereot l have signed my name to this specification.
