Description

March 39 1926. 1,578,295
v. D. SWIHART KNIFE GUARD Filed Dec. 29, 1924.
i spaced relation with the latter.
Patented Mar. 30, 1926.
UNITED STATES VIRGIL n. SWIHART, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
KNIFE GUARD.
Application filed December 29, 1924. Serial No. 758,758.
To all whom it may concern V Be it known that I, VIRGIL D. SWIHART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county-of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Knife Guards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and'use the same.
My invention relates tov in'iprovemcnts in guards for paring and slicing knives, to limit the thickness of the parings or the slices.
The object of the inventionis to provide,
an extremely simple and inexpensive device of the class set forth, yet one which will be highly efficient and desirable, and may be quickly and easily attached to or detached from a knife blade.
7 lVith the foregoing in view,.the invention resides in the novel subject matter herein after described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
v Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention applied to a paring knife blade.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the manner of using'the knife with the inention attached. a
Figure 3 1s a transverse sectlonal view as indicated by line 8-3 of Fig. 1.
In constructing my invention, I prefer to make use of a single length of wire having some degree of resiliency. This wire is bent to form a pair of elongated arches 1 whose legs 2 and 3 are adapted to straddle and yieldably grip the blade of a. knife, the crowns 4 of said arches being adapted for disposition at the back of the blade, in The legs 3 are connected by the intermediate portion of the wire, which constitutes a. straight guard bar adapted for spacedparallel relation with the edge of the blade, said'legs 3 being curved sufficiently to offset the bar from the blade, to such an extent as to perwit a. paring or slice to pass between the two, as shown in Fig. 2.
I The arches 1 are of a length substantially double the width of the blade in connection with which the device is to be used, and the halves of said arches, adjacent theircrowns i are considerably wider. than the thicknes f he blade; that y forcing the blade into these halves, it is freed, permitting the attachment to be readily removed from the knife so that both may be easily cleaned and the knife blade may be sharpened whenever necessary.
Preferably, the free ends of the legs 2 are provided with appropriate stops 6 to engage the edge of the blade so as to properly relate said edge with the guard bar 5. These stops may well be in the form of washers riveted or otherwise secured upon the legs 2.
followed, but within the scope of the in vention as claimed, modifications may of course be made.
I claim: 1. A. knife guard comprising a pair of spaced arches adapted to straddle and yieldingly grip the front and rear ends of a knife blade with-their crowns disposed at the-back i of said blade, said archesbeing of a length I substantially double the width of the blade I with which thev guard is used, the-halves of sa d arc-hes ad acent their crowns being wider than the thickness of the blade to free the'latter when moved into said halves, and a straight guard bar for parallel disposition with respectto the blade, the ends of said bar being ]0111i6(jl to two of the legs of said arches, the other two'legs being free,
2. A knife guard comprising a pair of spaced arches adapted to straddle and yield ingly grip the front and rear ends of a knife blade with their crowns disposed at the back of said blade, a straight guard bar for parallel disposition with respect to the blade, the ends of said bar being joined to two of the legs of said arches, the other two legs being free and stops on the ends of said free legs of the arches adapted to abutthe edge of'the knife blade to properly position the guard bar. I i
3. A structure as specified in claim 1; together with stops on said free legs of said arches adapted to abut the edge of the knife blade to properly position the guard barn In testimony whereof I have hereunto aifixed my signature.
- VIRGILD. SWIHART.
