Hydrants.
No.157,8l4. Patented nec. 15,1874.

fJ rm' j f Z f v L' UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIoEo ALBERT GUDENOGE, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HYDRANTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,814, dated December 15, 1874; application filed To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT GUDENOGE, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrants; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a hydrant, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to i the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section ot my invention through the line a: a', Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the line y y, Fig. l.
A represents the main cylinder, from which extend two branch cylinders, B B. Each cylinder is provided with a valve-seat, a, and an upward-opening piston-valve, C. Each valve is connected to a screw-stem, D, by a swiveljoint, b, made by lock-nuts above and below the top of the valve. The valves are further provided with guiderods d projecting downward from their lower sides. The valve-stems pass freely through the cover E, and screw through a cross-bar, Gr, above the same. The main cylinder A has two and the branch cylinders B each one outlet, h, having male connections at their outer ends for the hose, which connections are covered, when not in use, by screw-caps t' in the ordinary way.
In using the ordinary hydrant or fire-plug in the immediate vicinity of a lire only one engine can obtain water. But with my improvement the number of engines is only limited by the size of the main in the street, as it is intended that the capacity of the nozzles shall equal the area of the main.
November 9, 1874.
If it is necessary to have a connection of p four or more outlets made with a small lnain, then it is intended that three engines shall connect with the nozzles, while the fourth nozzle may be used to connect with another hydrant in the vicinity of the lire, thereby increasing the supply of water.
I am aware that hydrants have been constructed with two or more outlets, but, as they are operated by one valve, it .is necessary to shut off the supply of water entirely in order to make another connection. I am also aware that hydrants have been constructed with several water-ways, each controlled by valves, while with my improvement, the right and left connections being in use together with the one in front, should the one in rear be required, the
hose may be attached, and when the water is required, it is only necessary to raise the center valve higher, and the water will flow.
It will be readily seen that the outside or branch cylinders B are entirely independent of the center cylinder A, and that one or both nozzles of the center cylinder may be used at the saine time.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi A hydrant or fire-plu g eonsistin g of the main cylinder A and one or more branch cylinders, the main cylinder and its branch cylinders being provided with independent valves, and separate outlets, all constructed and arranged to operate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT GUDENOGE.
Witnesses:
WILLIAM L. Snorr, JOHN LoUNsBURY.
