To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALMIE M. JENNEss, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Dover, in the county of Straiford and Fatate of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to beds and more particularly to a foot rail therefor.

The primary object of this invention rcsides in providing means to be attached to .a bed, for preventing a patient therein from sliding toward the foot of the bed.

Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a foot rail for beds capable of being adjusted to fit beds having mattresses of different thicknesses.

A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a foot rail for beds which is capable of being adjusted to afford comfort to a patient resting his feet thereagainst.

With these and other objects in view. this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of elements to be hereinafter more particularly set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accon'ipanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that the right is reserved to make such departures from the present disclosure as come within the scope of the claim.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application Fig. 1 is a plane view of a bed showing the elements of this invention in operative position thereon.

In the present illustration of this invention, the B designates a bed to each side rail R of which is rigidly secured by suitable fastening elements an elongated clamp 5, each of which is provided with a projecting tubular standard 6 for the reception of adjustable columns 7 telescopically disposed therein.

The adjustable columns are held in rigid relation with the tubular standards through the instrumcntality of set screws 8 or the like, thus it will be observed that the columns can be regulated to various heights in the standards.

Adjustably secured to the free or outer end of eachadjustable column 7 is a-slotted head member 9 adapted to accommodate the opposite ends of a foot rail 12 and support it in any desired axial relation to the trunnion of the head.

The opposite ends of the foot rail 12 rests in the opposed slots 13 in the head members 9 and is formed so as to dispose a round surface 14 toward the patient to eliminate the possibility of discomfort to the occupant of the bed.

In the utilization of the aforesaid elements, the clamps 5 are rigidly secured in the desired position on the rails of a bed, preferably adjacent the foot thereof, with their tubular standards extended adjacent the opposite sides of the mattress of the bed, whereupon the adjustable columns are clamped in rigid relation thereto by suitable fastening elements after the foot rail 12 has been properly disposed on the surface of the mattress.

With this invention fully described, it is manifest that an article of comfort is provided for patients confined to beds and, through the simplicity of the assemblage involved, the same can be readily secured to any type of bed and adjusted to meet the prevailing necessities for comfort to a sick patient.
