CAsARo'r'rI, citizens ot .the United States, residing` at Oakland, county ot Alameda, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ball Cocks; and we do declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description ot the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part -oll this application.
This invention relates to improvements in ball cocks of the type particularly adapted to control the supply of water to tanks, especially those used in connection with water closets.
The type of ball cock shown in this invention is especially intended as an improvement over the cock shown in Patent No. 1,299,708, dated April S, 1919, to Max Harbisreitinger, the construction having" been greatly simplified Vand the ope-ration. improved and rendered more eliicient.`
The principal objects of the present invention are' to provide a ball-loat controlled 'cock so constructed that the body of the same is formed of a single member; the water enters the tank from the cock in such a manner that avery silent flow is had;
means are provided for insuring this silence veven with a high pressure ofV water; both the valve and its seat are easily removable without removing or dismounting the body member `from the tank; andthe necessary refilltube is connected to the body in such a manner that but very little bending of the tube to suit any condition is necessary.
rlhese objects we accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved ball-cock.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
Referring now more particularly to the characters ot' reference on the drawings, the immoral 1 denotes the barrel of the cock, threaded at its lower end as at 2 and provided with an integral flange 3 above the threaded portion to form a support for a rubber washer 4 which rests on the bottom ot a tank, and is clamped to form a'watertight ]o1nt by means oi a lock nut 5 on the portion 2 which projects below the tank.
A transverse passage 6 is cut throughthe barrel 1 a short distance above the flange 3, a water-delecting flange 7 beingformed integral withsaid barrel immediately above the passage 6.
The bore of the barrel from the said passage tapers outwardly therefrom tothe lower end ot the barrel to removably receive a similarly tapered sleeve 8, the upper end is formed as a valve-seat 9 and is in substantial alinement with the lower end of the passage 6. rllhe lower end of the vsleeve has an integral and outwardly projecting flange 10 which seats in a kconcentric but somewhat enlarged recess 11 in the lower end of the barrel, the sleeve being normallyv held from downward movement by the usual slip-joint nut 12 employed in making the connection with the water intake-pipe leading to the cock.`
Arranged to engage the seat 9 isa plungervalve 13, of suitable material, slidable easily in the bore of the barrel above the passage 6 for a short distance, the borebeing enlarged from thereon up, Vso that the valve may be readily withdrawn when desired.
The valve 13 is attached to a stem 14 ouk the upper end ot which is fixed a plunger 15 slidable in the barrel,and projecting thereabove.
Slidably mounted ina transverse slot 16 on the upper end of the plunger is a yoke 17, normally held in place by a removable cap 18 on the plunger, which covers said slot, the lower ends of the yoke being connected to allow vertical movement thereof to a lever mechanism 19 mounted on the barrel, this structure being substantially as shown in the above mentioned patent. Mounted for adjustment in a vertical plane and on the outer end of the lever mechanism is the rod 2O to the outer end of which is connected the usual ball-float (not shown).
Formed integral with the barrel 1 under the lever structure is a bracket or arm 21, in which is threaded an adjustment screw 22 which bears on said lever structure.
Formed integral with the barrel 1 below the plunger 15 is a tapped boss 23, to rcceivc a street-L 24 ot usual type, with a rubber washer 24a therebetween, in which L is secured the usual form of refill-tube 25 Uff) LTD

which is led thence to the overflow pipe of the cock and re-tapping the tube-receiving the tank.
In operation, it' the tank is empty, 'the valve. 13 will be raised olii the seat 9, allowing the water to flow into the tank, near the bottom through the passage 6. Owing to the location ot this passage near the bottom ot the tank, and to the influence ot the detlector T, the water will tlow horizontally, and since it thus hasV no tall atter entering the tank, the flow will be practically noiseless.
lt the water pressure in the piping to the cock very high, the. screw is adjusted upwardly so that the lever mechanism is raised somewhat, and the valve consequently lowered and prevented 'from opening` to its full extent, even when the tank is empty, thus preventing` too great an inrush ot water and maintaining the silence o'l" operation.
lt it is desired to remove the valve 'l2-3 for replacement or otherwise, it is only neces-- sary to disconnect the yoke from the plunger l5 by removing the cap 1S, when -Said plunger, stein let and valve lil, may be easily withdrawn.
lt it should be nece-:sary to renew or retinish the valve seat owingA to corrosion or otherwise, it only necess to ren'iove the nut l2, the tank being empty and the water pressure beingl ot course sluit ott, and start the sleeve 8 downwardly by inserting' a screw-driver blade, or similar prying' tool, into the. recess ll about the flange l0, and exert a bearing-down pressure upon said flange, or by downward pressure on plunger l5.
By reason ot the use ot the street-ln in connection with the refill tube, the latter may be turned to any desired angle with but very little bending o't said tube.
lilith the ordinary method of installing these tubes, which is by tapping them directly into the body, it very Otte-n occurs that, these tubes corrode and break off just outside the body, which necessitates removing' hole therein. This is obviated with our construction, since the L member is rigid and hence may be made ot a metal well able to withstand corrosion. 1n the event of the corrosion of the refill-tube in this case, it is only necessary to remove the L itself, and either retap it or replace it with a new one.
F rom the toregoing,` description it will be readily seen that we have produced such a device as substantially fultills the objects ot the invention as set torth herein.
lllhile this specilication sets torth in detail the present and preferred construction ot the device, still in practice such deviations trom such detail may beI resorted to as do not torni aV departure from the spirit ot the invention, as delined by the appended claim.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and useituland desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
ln a valve structure t'or use in liquid tanks, a tubular member having its lower end arranged to project. below a tank and having' an outlet vto discharge. into the tank, said tubular member havinga straight bore .trom the outlet downwardly, a sleeve mounted in the straight bore ot the tubular member and being' bored at its lower end to receive a standard intake pipe, the upper end ot the sleeve being formed as a valveseat, and an outwardly projecting' flange on the. lower end of the sleeve adapted to eX- tend across and abut against the lower end et the tubular member, whereby to locate the sleeve in Vthe tubular member, the latter beingz` threaded to receive a flanged nut placed about the pipe, whereby said nut will both hold the sleevein place in the tubular member and sec-ure the intake pipe thereto.
