To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS GEORGE Bax- ENDEN, a subject of the King of Great Brltain, of Lawrenny, Hempstead Road, Watford, in the county ofsHertford, England,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in or Relating to Spools for Photographic-Camera Films and Similar Purposes, of which the following is a, specification.
This invention relates to metal spools for photographic camera films and similar puroses. p I have described in my previous application for U. S. A. patent, Serial No. 740,288, a metal spool consisting of a body part rolled up from a sheet metal blank and having the discs which form the end flanges attached to thebody part by electric weldmg.
The present invention has for its object to provide an improved construction particularly adapted to facilitate the electric welding of the end discs to the body of the spool.
To this end, and accordin to the present I invention, the, ends of the tu ular body part are turned outwardly or inwardly to a small extent so as to provide at each end a narrow flange, the face of which abuts against the inner face of the end disc and provides a double thickness of metal at this point whereby the electric welding operation can be carried out in a practical and more efficient manner and a neat integral connection obtained.
The improved metal spool is provided with the usual slots for receiving the end of the photographic film and the end discs are provided with the usual pin hole at one end and slot for the winding key at the other.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a metallic spool embodying the present invention and some modified formsthereof.
Fig. 1 is an elevation partly in section showing the separate parts of the improved spool before assembling.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the finished spool the spool which is convenientlyrolled. up from a metal blank, one edge of which is cut away so that when rolled up the end portions 6 overlap the opposite edge whilst at the intervening portion the edges remain spaced apart to provide a slot 0 for the reception of the end of the fihn which is to be wound on the spool in the usual manner. Each end of the tubular body part (1 thus formed is turned orflared outwardly for a short distance to provide a narrow flange d.
Alternatively the flanges d may be turned inwardly as in Fig. 6.
e and f are the end discs, one of which is provided with a central hole, and the other with a slot for the winding key.
In manufacturing the finished spool the narrow flanges d are placed so as to abut against the inner faces of the correspondin end discs 6 and f and are electrically welds to the said discs at the junction of the flanges d therewith, thus producing a spool in which the end discs and body part are made integral by welding, the welding operation being greatly facilitated by the double thickness of metal provided at the point of connection by the narrow flanges d.
If desired the overlapping end parts I) of the tubular body a may also be welded together.
The finished integrally constructed spool made in accordance with the present invention is strong and of good appearance.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, the end discs 6 and f forming the flanges of the spool may is fitted across the interior of the hollow body part a by making said stop piece of U shaped form and connecting the ends of the said U shaped stop to the inner face of the adjacent end disc f by electric welding.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Y 1. A metal spool such as used for photographic films comprisin the combination of two end discs, a tubu ar body part having its ends formed with narrow flanges which abut against the end discs and are welded thereto, an inner perforated stop be embossed or otherwise provided with v IQO I piece Welded to one of the discs and in ranged to be engaged by a long Winding key Where such are employed.
