TABLE SLIDE.
Application filed December 22, 1924. Serial No. 757,521.
To' all whomv t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT H. DREW, a citizen of the United States, and resident of lVatertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table Slides; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to table slides.
In extension tables as heretofore constructed, it has been'the uniform practice to provide lap blocks mounted within the grooves in the slides to limit the extension of the slide. It has also been the practice to provide lapvblocks of different lengths which were mounted within the grooves between the slides, so as lto provide tables which had different extensions. When it became necessary to change the extension of a table, extensive operations had to be employed to accomplish this result. For example, the slides had to be detached from the permanent leaves and moved apart in order to expose the lap block and permit their removal. Thereafter, the outer slides were again attached to the leaves after new lap blocks had been positioned within the grooves.
This invention is designed to providea slide for an extension table in which the outer slide members are permanently rigidly secured to the permanent leaves, in which the lap blocks are dispensed with, and in which means are carried by the slide members which initially limit the extension ofV the table but which may be readily removed without removing either of the outer slide members from the permanent leaves, thus materially simplifying the operation of changing the extension of the table.
In more detail, objects of this invention are to provide an extension slide in which grooves o-r similar members are provided in the center slide member, and in which removable pins, such as threaded members, are carried by the outer slide members and normally fit within the grooves so that the pins may be readily removed when a greater extension is desired without detaching either of the outer slide members from the permanent leaves. v
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view from the under side of a table showing it in closed position and :showing the device adjusted for minimum extension.
Figure 2 is a view corresponding to Figure 1 showing the table extended.
Figure 3 is a view corresponding to Figure 2 showing the device adjusted for maximum extension.
Figure 4 is'an enlarged transverse sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure l.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that a pair of outer slide members l and 2 are rigidly and permanently secured to the permanent leaves 3 and -4 ofthe extension table. ber 5 is positioned between the outer slide members and is slidably joined thereto in any suitable manner as for instance by means of the rollers 6 and end blocks 7 as shownin detail in Figure 4.
The center slide member 5 is provided with elongated slots 6 on opposite sides thereof and these slots, it will be noted, are provided with closed ends. The outer slide members are provided with removable pins which are normally slidably set within the respective grooves. Preferably screws 8 are used for these pins and are threaded into the outer slide members 1 and 2, as clearly shown in Figure 4, suitable recesses being provided for their heads. TheV inner ends of the screws slidably fit the grooves 6 under normal conditions, and thus limit the extension of the table. For example, when the screws are in position, as shown in Figure 2, the table is adapted for one standard length of extension. If it is desired to alter this table and adapt it for a greater extension, it is merely necessary to remove the screw 8 and thus permit the table to be extended to its greatest amount, the end blocks 7 contacting in the usual manner and preventing further extension.
It will be seen that the tedious and relatively diicult operation of detaching the outer slides from the permanent -leaves is wholly avoided by this invention, and a greater extension may be secured in a very simple manner by merely removing the screws 8. When it is considered that the outer slides are usually not only securely fastened to the permanent leaves by screws or similar members but also glued either directly or through an intermediate block to such leaves it becomes at once apparent that an alteration of the extension of the finished table is a relatively diliicult matter and calls An intermediate or center slide mem- :for extensive operations. This invention overcomes these defects and pei-nnte a dealer to carry a sinzill number of tables in stoel; having a given extension, and to quickly change the tables to it greater extension, and it is thus apparent that the dealer not iequired to curry u, large stock of tnblefs lifwing; different extensions.
Although the invention hee been desoribed in considerable detail, it to Ehe understood. that the invention may be vei'ionely emllodied nncl ist, iliereffori,7 to be liifniterl onlir als claimed.
