SHADE HOLDER FOR LIGHTING FIXTURES.

Application filed March 17, 1923. Serial No. 625,780.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN F. GU'riI, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shade Holders for Lighting Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to lightin fixtures, and particularly to the art of supporting glass shades, and the like, in the reflectors, or other elements, which combine in making up the complete fixture. I

In most lighting fixtures there is a porcelain enamel reflector, or its equivalent, and the usual manner of supporting a. glass shade therein has been to provide orifices in the porcelain enamel member, and have set screws mounted therein which are tightened against the lips of the shade.

In the operation of my business I have manufactured many such reflectors and have also handled many makes which have been built by other manufacturers and it has been my experience that such a construction tends to loosen, or crack the enamel. It has thcrefore been my purpose to devise a construction which will at all times preserve the enamel and cause no strain or stress to be exerted thereon.

My invention consists of certain details of construction hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 shows a sectional view of my device, and

Fig. 2 shows a modified form of the same, also in section.

Referring to the accompanying drawings the reference numeral 10 is used to indicate a reflector, which is preferably provided with porcelain enamel (not shown). The numeral 11 indicates the depending circular portion of the reflector by means of which the proper opening is formed to receive the shade 12. Preferably the depending portion 11 terminates with a small inwardly projecting flange 13. A collar let is seated within the opening in the reflector and, preferably, rests upon the upper surface of the flange 13. Orifices 15 have been provided in the depending portion of the reflector, prior to the time that the porcelain enamel has been placed thereon. In the collar 14- I have provided orifices 1G to register with orifices 15, the orifices 16 being screw threaded to receive the shafts 17 of set screws 18.

In the modified form I provided bushings 19 which are riveted or welded, within the orifices 15 in the collar 14, these bushings projecting outwardly through their respective orifices 15. Obviously these bushings are provided with screw threaded orifices to receive the set screws 18.

The operation of my device is obvious it being simply necessary to see that the set screws are clamped to the lip of the bowl, which holds it in proper position in the fixture. By this construction there is no stress or strain whatsoever on the porcelain enamel and adequate means is supplied for properly retaining the shade in its relative position with the reliector.

Having thus described my invention .what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is.

1. A shade holder comprising an outer ring with a. plurality of orifices therein and an inwardly projecting flange formed at its base, an inner ring to fit within the outer ring and rest upon the flange thereof to receive the neck of a shade, and screw threaded orifices in said inner ring to register with the orifices in the outer ring, set screws to pass through the orifices in the outer ring, engage the scr w threads in the orifices in the inner ring and the neck of the shade.

2. A shade holder comprising an outer ring with a plurality of orifices therein and an inwardly projecting flange formed at its base, and an inner ring, to receive the neck of a shade with bushing formed thereon to register with the orifices in the outer ring, said bushings having screw 'hreaded channels therein, set screws to engage the screw threads in the channels of the bushings and the neck of the shade.
