Be it known that I, Hrnsrnn Snrnnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multicolor \Vrapping-Paper-Printing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to multicolor wrapping paper printing machines and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a machine of the character adapted to be placed upon a counter or. other convenient support in a place of business and which retains a roll of wrapping paper. The paper may be unreeled from the roll by hand and is guided against a printing cylinder as it unwinds from the roll. Tension means are provided for preventing the run of paper between the roll and the printing cylinder from becoming slack. An ink distributor is operated from the printing cylinder and includes a series of ribbons trained around rollers and which have runs which enter a fountain tray which retains the ink. Means are provided for operating the ribbons from the printing cylinder.

Figure 5 is a plan view of a section of the paper roll bearing the desired printed matter or advertisement.
Figure 6 is a plan view of the printing cylinder.
Figure 7 is a similar View of the inking fountain and Figures 8 and 9 are detail fragmentary sectional views.
The casing of the machine consists of a base member 1 which is open at its central portion. Side panels 2 are mounted upon the upper surface of the base member and are in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other. A cross piece 3 connects the upper portions of the side panels together and bridges the space between them. A
spring clip 4 is mounted upon the intermediate portion of the cross piece. Top sections 5 and 6 are detachably mounted upon the upper edges of the side panels and bridge the space between them. These sections are held in position by catches 7 and 8 respectively and the adjacent edges of the top sections are spaced from each other at the cross piece 3. The section 6 is provided with a flange 8 which engages over the cross piece and the flange is recessed as at 9 to receive the clip 4.
The side panels are provided at their inner surfaces with crotches 10 adapted toreceive the ends of a shaft 11 upon which a roll of paper 12 is wound. The section 5 is provided at its inner surface with a fiat spring 13 one end of which is adapted to bear against the roll of paper and which prevents the run of paper from becoming slaipk as the paper is being unreeled from the ro A paper cutting or. tearing mechanism is located in the space between the adjacent edges of the top sections. Said mechanism comprises a U-shaped frame 15 including a cross bar 15, said frame being pivoted at its ends 15 upon pivots 16 mounted upon the side panels of the casing. The frame is providedat its ends with inwardly disposed pins 17 and inwardly disposed lugs 18. A knife 19 is provided at its ends with arms 20 which are provided with slots 21 which receive the pins 17 and are also provided with shoulders 22 under which the lugs 18 may engage to hold the knife at a lowered position with relation to the frame. The arms are pivoted to the side panels at points 23 which are located to one side of the pivots 16. A cross rod 24 is connected with the arms 20 and may engage under the clip 4 when the frame and knife are swung upwardly to hold the said parts by friction in an elevated position. The run of the strip of paper passes under the knife and may be cut or torn off at the edge thereof.
A guiding roller 30' is journaled between the side panels and the run of paper from the roll is trained around the roller 30. Arms 31 are pivoted at the inner sides of the side panels and springs 32 are con nected at one end with the said arms and at their other ends to the side panels. These springs hold the free ends of the arms to- Ward the roller 30. One of the arms 31 is provided with a circular opening adapted to receive one'end of a shaft 8% of a roller 35 and the other arm is provided with a slot 136 which neceives the other end of the said shaft. The roller bears upon the run of paper and holds the same down upon the roller 30. 1
A printing cylinder 4L0 is journaled in the casing and is provided at its ends with gear wheels 41. A sheet of rubber a2 is laced upon the cylinder and the printing charac'ters stand up from the surface of the sheet. As the 'cylinder turns the roller 30 hoids the paper against the printing characters of the sheet.
'The inking mechanism comprises a formtain a5 which is supported at its ends upon lugs 4'6 mounted at the inner surfaces of the side panels. Partition 'Walls .47 divide the fountain tray compartments adapted to retain inh of different colors. Rollers 48 are journaled transversely of the compartments and ribbons 49 are trained around the rollers 48. A ratchet Wheel 50 is mount- ;ed upon the shaft of one of the rollers 48 and lever 51 is pivoted upon said shaft. A pawl 52 is pivoted upon the lever and is adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet Wheel. A iink 53 is pivoted to the free end of the lever and is mounted upon an eccentric 54: attached to the shaft of the cylinder. Therefore as the cylinder turns the lirflr is moved longitudinally and :the lever is swung whereby the lever is rocked and the pawl engaging the teeth of the ratchet Wheel turns the "wheel by stages and as the attached roller is turned the ribbons are moved in orbits in the ink fountain and take up the different colored ink. An ink distributing roller .55 is journaled upon the fountain tray and is provided at its ends with gear Wheels 56 which mesh with the gear 'Wheels upon the printing cylinder. The roller bears upon the upper runs of the iibbons and takes the ink up from the same :and applies the different colored ink to the faces of the printing characters upon the printing sheet. As "the paper comes in contact with the faces of the characters the ink is applied to the paper.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. In 'a roll paper printing machine a casing comprising a base member, side panels mounted upon the "base member, top sections detaehably mounted upon the edges of the side ,panels :and bridging the space between the panel's, means mounted upon the side panels for supporting a roll of "paper, a printing cylinder and ink fountain and a flat spring mounted upon the inner surface of one'of the top sections and adapted to hear at its free end against the roll of paper when the said section is applied to the side panels and serving as a tensioning means for the roll.
