SPRING-ROLLER HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, "Roy M. MEYER, a, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and fitate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Roller Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of 'the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention is a new and improved holding device for a spring roller, such as the roller upon which a map is wound. Ordinarily, holders or casings of this character are "muzzle-loaded, that is the roller with the wound map or the like, is inserted from one end of the casing and a closure then applied to the latter. This entails an appreciable amount of difficulty in properly engaging the usual pintles on the ends of the roller, with the receiving means therefor, and moreover, if the roller must be removed, for instance, to adjust the spring thereof so that it will properly wind the map or other sheet, quite an amount of time and labor is consumed. It is the principal object of my invention to overcome such difliculties by the provision of a novel form of easing which is constructed from two sections, the one being stationary with respect to the other, means being provided for mounting the roller upon the removable section. Thus, before the roller is inserted into the main body of the casing, it may be mounted with ease, and even if it is necessary to remove the roller for adjustmentor other purposes, after it has once been 1nserted, this may be quickly and easily accomplished.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel casing structure hereinafter described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawing.

As the construction herein disclosed has been successfully manufactured and used, it may be consideredas the preferred form of the invention, and while such form will be hereinafter specifically described, it is to be understood at the outset, that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous modifications may be made.
The numeral 1 designates a main channelshaped casing section whose major portion is formed by bending an elongated sheet metal strip into channel shape, one 'Llongitudinaledge portion of this strip being bent outwardly substantially upon itself to provide a longitudinal hook flange 2 which reinforces such edge portion as well as performing another useful function hereinafter described. The other edge portion '3 of the metal strip is by preference bent inwardly upon itself as indicated at 3 for reinforcing purposes. End plates 4 are provided to close the ends of the channels, said end plates having inwardly projecting flanges 5 which are preferably integral therewith, these flanges being secured by rivets or the like to the end of the metal strip. Preferably, the hook flange 2 terminates at the inner edges of these flanges, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. For a purpose toappear, the flanges 5 are formed with notches 6 at the open side of the main casing section 1.
A second sheet metal strip 8, constituting a removable casing section, has one of its longitudinal edge portions bent inwardly substantially upon itself to form a hook flange 9 for detachable engagement with the flange 2, the other edge portion 10 of this removable casing section being preferably bent upon itself for reinforcing purposes. The section 8 closes the open side of the section 1 with the exception of a narrow longitudinal slot 11 which remains between the edge portions 3 and 10 of the sections 1 and 8 respectively, said slot receiving the map or other curtain 12 which is secured to the roller 13 to be mounted in the eas- Trojecting inwardly from the ends of the casing section 8, are two roller supporting arms 14:, said arms having appropriate openings 15 to receive .the usual pintles of the roller 13. The inner extremities of these arms are laterally projected as indicated at 16 to abut the end plates 4- as shown clearly in Fig. 4, thereby holding the arms against spreading so that they cannot become accidentally disengaged from the roller pintles.
The arms 14 are preferably separate from the casing section 8 and are provided at their outer ends with laterally projecting, integral flanges 17 these flanges being preferably secured to the ends of the casing section 8 by rivets 18 or other preferredmeans. In the construction shown, openings 19 are formed through the flanges 17, the casing section 8, and the flanges 5, for the purpose of receiving screws 20 which co-operate with the hook flanges 2 and 9, in detachably securing the two casing sections 1 and 8 in assembled relation. When either applying the section 8 to or removing it from the casing section 1, the lateral ends 16 of the arms 14: pass through the notches 6.
By providing the novel construction shown and described, or a substantial equivalent thereof, it will be seen that the roller may be mounted upon the removable section of the casing while the latter is absolutely free of connection with the main casing section 1, so that such mounting may be quickly and easily established. Then, the roller and the arms 14 may move bodily into the casing section 1 through the open side of the latter, as the section 8 is applied. It is then a simple matter to inter-engage the flanges 2 and 9 and insert the screws 20, holding the sections in assembled relation. Then, if it is necessary to remove the roller for any purpose, such as re-adjustment of its spring, this may be readily accomplished by removing the screws 20 and disengaging the flanges 2 and 9. As clearly disclosed in Fig. 5, the upper edges of the arms 14; are spaced downwardly from the upper edge of the main casing section 1, to such an extent as to readily permit the necessary relative movement of casing sections, for the purpose of disengaging the above named flanges 2 and 8.
Any desired means may be provided for supporting the device, loops 21 being pretterably secured to the main casing section 1 and adapted for engagement with hooks or any other desired supports.
As hereinbefore stated, the construction shown is preferable, but variations may be made within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A spring roller holder comprising an elongated casing longitudinally divided into relatively stationary and removable sections, said sections having longitudinal edge portions spaced apart to form a slot through which a map or analogous sheet may pass from the roller, means for mounting the roller on the removable casing section, and releasable means for holding the two casing sections in assembled relation.
2. A spring roller holder comprising an enlongated channel-shaped section whose open side is of a width to permit passage of the roller therethrough, an elongated cover section for said open side of the channelshaped casing section, one longitudinal edge portion of one of said sections being spaced from a longitudinal edge portion of the other section to provide a slot through which a map or analogous sheet may pass from the roller, releasable means securing the tWo casing sections together, and means for mounting the roller on said cover section.
3. A. spring roller holder comprising an elongated channel-shaped section Whose open side is of a width to permit passage of the roller therethrough, an elongated cover section for said open side of the channelshaped casing section, one longitudinal edge portion of one of said sections being spaced from a longitudinal edge portion of the other section to provide a slot through which a map or analogous sheet may pass from the roller, the other longitudinal edge portions of the two casing sections having detachably interfltting longitudinal flanges, and releasable fasteners connecting the two casing sections and normally holding said flanges in operative engagement with each other.
4. A spring roller holder comprising an elongated casing longitudinally divided into relatively stationary and removable sections, said stationary section having end walls, a pair of arms projecting from the removable casing section into the stationary section and having openings to receive the usual roller pintles, said arms being provided with lateral projections in abutting relation with the interior surfaces of said end walls of the stationary casing section to hold said arms against spreading, and releasable means for holding the two casing sections in assembled relation.

A spring roller holder comprising a strip of sheet metal bent into channel shape in transverse section and havingone of its longitudinal edge portions bent outwardly substantially upon itself to form a hook flange, a pair of end plates having flanges secured to the ends of said bent metal strip to form therewith a main casing section, said flanges having notches at the open side of said main casing section, a second sheet metal strip having one longitudinal edge portion bent to form a hook flange which reinovably engages the first named hook flange, said second strip closing the open side of the casing with the exception of a narrow longitudinal slot, said second strip constituting a removable casing section, a removable casing section from or applying air of roller-supporting arms projecting it to the main casing section, and releasable 1 rom the ends of this removable casing secmeans connecting the ends of the two casing tion into the main casing section and hevsections.
