UNITED STATES PATENT DEEIOE MosEs HUTOHINSON, OF NORFOLK, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN HEATING-DRUMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,605, dated December 8, 1874; application filed October 28, 1874. i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MosEs HU'roHINsoN, of Norfolk, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Heaters, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure ,1 represents a transverse vertical section in the plane as at, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in the plane 3 y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section in the plane 22, Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in an upper and lower series of flues, which are secured in heads, one of which communicates with the smoke-flue of a stove, while said heads communicate with each other through vertical pipes, and are provided with. partitions in such a manner that the heated gases rising from the stove are compelled to circulate first through the lower series of flues; then they ascend and circulate through to the upper series of flues, before they are permitted to escape into the chimney, and, as the entire system of llues is heated, a superior heating effect is produced.
In the drawing, the letters A A, Figs. 1 and 2, designate two heads,'which are hollow and closed at their ends, and which communicate with each other by a series of flues, B B. (Best seen in Fig. 2.) From the lower part of the head A extends a short pipe or nipple, G, which fits the smoke-pipe of a stove or range of any desired kind; and the-aperture which leads from this nipple into the head A is separated from the flues B by a partition, a, in said head. Above the heads A A, and ata certain distance from the same, are situated two other heads, D D, which are supported by standards E, Fig. 1, and one of which connects, by one or more vertical pipes,
F, with the lower head A. Said upper heads communicate with each other through flues G G, and in the head D is a partition, 12.. From this head rises a nipple, H, which connects with the chimney-flue. The partitions a b in the heads A D are so placed in relation to the smoke-pipe O, the vertical pipes F, and the escape pipe H that the smoke, on passing into the head A, has to pass through the flues B to the head A thence through the flues B back to the head A; then up through the vertical pipes F into the head D thence through the flues G to the head D thence through the flues G back to the head D, and through the pipe 11 to the chimney.
By this circulation of the heated gases and the smoke which rise from the fire through the two sets of flues and their heads the temperature of all these parts is raised to a high degree, and thereby a heater is obtained which presents a very extensive radiating-surface, and which is heated without requiring any additional expenditure of fuel. K
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is
In a heating-drum in which the upper and lower sections or heads are provided with horizontal flues, connected or united together by vertical pipes, the combination, with such parts, of the partitions arranged in the upper and lower heads, for interrupting the passage of the gases on their way to the exit-pipe in the upper section, and causing them to circulate, before escaping, through the lower and upper flues, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of October, 1874..
MOSES HUTOHINSON.
