Description

March 2 1926. 1,575,533
E. c. BRIERLEY POLISHING DEVICE Filed June 11, 1925 Patented Mar. 2, 1926.
uu rso STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUSTACE CARLILL BRIERLEY, OF BATH, ENGLAND.
POLISHING DEVICE.
Application filed .Tune 11, 1925. Serial No. 36,537.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EUSTAGE CARL'lLL Biunnnnr British sub ect residin at Vale 1' 1 7 Y) T ,1 Lodge, ll eston l ark, llatn, Eaomersetslnre,
lilngland, have invented a new and Improved Polishing Device, of which the following is a specihcation.
This invention comprises a new or im" causes considerable friction and the nails be come heated even though a comparatively smallpressure is applied to the pad. Moreover, whether applied to manicure purposes or other purposes the pads as hitherto constructed have not sul'licient resilienty to perform the cleansingor polishing purpose cllectually or for any length of time Without the application of considerable pressure, as, after use for a short period, the pads become hard and hence Wanting in eiiiciency.
A feature of the present invention consists in the provision of a polishing device which incorporates an inflatable pad menr her and means for inflating; said pad as and when desired.
Another feature of the luv tion consists in a polishin'gdevice comprising a pneumatic cushion having; assembled over some a cover Which COllSbrbllllGS or provided with a Working or polishing surface, said cushion having incorporated therewith a pump for the inflation thereof, and the Whole being mounted in a self-contained manner upon r Within a suitable stock or holder.
A further feature resi es in the provision in conjunction with the pump of a valve adapted to be operated. for releasing the air from the cushion when desired.
Further features of the invention hereinafter more fully described.
For the purpose of more fully describing; the nature of this invention, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. l is a perspective view of a polishing device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
in be f the device.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through Fig. 3
is a cross section through the device.
In one convenient method of carrying out the invention, same Will be described as applied to a manicure polishing pad. A StOClA or holder 1 of metal, wood or other suitable rigid material is in the nature of a plate, preferably ofelliptical'shape in plan having its edges overturned as at 1 so as to form said stock to inverted channel shape iii-plan. The stock 1 is formed at its two ends with downwardly projecting lugs 1", 1, one of said lugs 1 having a plain hole While the other 1 has a screw-threaded hole for the reception of a screw 2; I Assembled lengthwise beneath the stock '1 1s an air pump or inflator 3 of the customary single-acting type, said pump being fired in position at one end by inserting a re duced boss portion l of a plug-or cap 4: fixed at the one end of the pump barrellinto the plain hole in the lug 1 and at the-other end by screwing up the screw 2. The pump rod 5 which is adapted to be reciprocated Within the pump barrel 3 carries out its inor end a suitable piston and at its outer end a knob or handle, said knob projecting on theouter side oi: the lug- 1.
Near the end of the pump barrel opposite to that at Which the piston rod projects a small port or perforation 6 through which an:- 1s pumped into a. pneumatic cushion 7 i for the purpose of inflating" same. This cushion is preierably ct suitable elastic material and conveniently of app-ionimatel cigar shape, and is suitably secured attits ends to thepump in such a nianner that'the iun'ip passes through same.
Surrounding the cushion in a readily detachable anti interchangeable manner is an outer cover 8 of Wash leather or other suitable material which provides the polishing or Working surface of the pad, said cover being secured by adhesive or otherwise to, or having assembled therein, a rigid plate 8 of elliptical shape, which is adapted to fit within the side flanges 1 of the stock 1 so-as to retain the cover 8 in the required position. The cover 8 is tapered at its ends so as to cause same to conform to boat shape when the cushion is inflated therein.
The port 6 in the pump barrel is covered with a piece of rubber-tubing which functions in the manner Well known to prevent lill') return of air from the cushion t0 the pump. A portion of the length of the pump barrel at the handle end may advantageously be slightly enlarged in diameter as at 10 to ensure free inflow of air to the front of the piston.
In order to permit ofthe ready deflation of the cushion a plug-like extension 11 is secured at the closed end of pump barrel, said extension having an L shaped air passage 12 therein, one arm of which passage opens out at the circumferential face of the plug while the other extends axially to an annular chamber or recess 13in the plug amount of movement in an axial direction.
lVhen the sci-en 2 is tightened'up, the valve let is pressed on to its seating and closes the passage 12, and in order to deliate the cushion all that is necessary is to unscrew the screw 2 to a small degree when the air will pass from the cushion by Way or the passage 12 and out from the end of the plug 11 past the valve let.
The stock. l'may have a handle portion 15 screwed or otherwise secured thereto, or said handle may be an integral port-ion of the stock.
I claim I v J 1. A polishing device embodying an inflatable pad and a pump for inflating the same arranged Within the pad substantially as described so as to produce a single, selfcontained, unit.
2. A polishing d vice embodying a rigid holder, an inflatable pad and a pump, the pump being Within the pad so as to constitute therewith a single self-contained unit, and the pump being supported in'th-e holder, thereby unitingthe pad thereto.
8. A polishing device comprising in combination a rigid holder constructed for convenient manipulation, an inflatable pad, a pump for inflating the pad arranged to con stitute therewith a single unit, the pump being supported by the holder and uniting the pad thereto, and a cover for the pad its 0 )osite endsto the holder. the mini having a. handle by which it may be Worked that is treely movable independently of the supporting connections for the pump.
6. In a polishing device, the combination 01 a holder having a peripheral flange, an inflatable pad adapted lobe suppor'ed be low the holder and within the confines of the said flange, a pump for inflating the holder having supports at its opposite e'nds in the flange of the holder, the pump having a handle by which it is operated extend ing through the flange, a valve controlling an exit through which the pad may be deflated, the valve having operating means extending through the flange of the holder, and an elastic cover for the pad carried by the holder.
7. In a polishing device, a stock, a pneumatic cushion carried by said stock, a pump mounted on the stoclrfor intiating said cushion, said pump comprising a tubular pump barrel and reciprocative plunger, and said barrel extending completely through the pneumatic cushion and having an air release valve for effecting deflation of the cushion.
8. In a polishing device, a stock or holder, a pneumatic cushion carried thereby, a cover assembled over said cushion, a. pump barrel, with reciprocating plunger detachably mounted upon the stock, an-air release valve-for deflating the cushion and means for controlling said valve, said valve controlling ,means also functioning means for fixing the pump with cushion in posi-.
tion upon the stock or holder.
