I of Wood, but it may be made of metal.
UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
rETER E. BAKER, 0E VIRGINIA CITY, NEVADA.
IMPRQVEMENT IN BOOT-JACKS.
Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,485, dated December 8, 1874 application filed July 3,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER H. BAKER, of
`Virginia City, in the county of Storey and State of Nevada, have invented a never and useful Improvement in Boot-Jacks, oi' which the following is a specification:
The invention will lirst be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure lis a vertical longitudinal section of Fig. 2, taken on the line cc x. Fig. 2 is a top view.
` Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the bed-plate, which is preferably made B is a spring plate or casting, which is hinged at the back end to the bed-plate A. C is a spring beneath the casting B, Which raises and supports it in an inclined position, as seen in Fig. l. This casting B is ina-de in two parts, B and I), fitted together and held by the screw E, so as to form a single piece, and it may be cast in a single piece, if desired. The forward portion, D, is inclined back and is curved to receive the back portion of the boot, and has an opening, D. Fis the catch-plate, which is hinged to the part D by the pivots G Gr. The front end ofthe plate F is provided with a slot, L, .through which passes the screw K that attaches the plate to the bed A, and on which it slides when the plate B is forced down by the pressure applied thereto.
In drawing off a boot, the heel thereof is placed 1n the opening J, between the parts D F, and pressure applied to plate or lever B by the other boot, which causes said heel to be griped or clamped more or less tightly, according to the degree of the pressure. While the boot is thus held the foot may be withdrawn.
I have incidentally illustrated in the drawing a supplementary heel-holding device, which may be adjusted for enlarging or diminishing the size of the opening. Said device consists of a bent pivoted plate, H, and thumb-screw I.
The combination of the parts B, D, and F, pivoted together, and one hinged to bed A, the other provided with a s lot, L, to receive the fired stud K on which it slides, substantially as shown and described.
PETER HANSON BAKER.
