IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR WHITENING AND BUFFING LEATHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,442, dated December 8, 1874; application filed May 8, 1874.
machine, which is used under the cutting-cylinder, and on which the leather is placed to be operated on. This bed is caused to vibrate or reciprocate by suitably-applied mechanism, so as to bring the leather under the action of the cutter at each movement of the bed, the result being to facilitate the handling of the leather, to produce a more uniform surface in whitening, and avoid the use of a reciprocatin g cutting-cylinder.
The drawing represents, in Figure 1, a vertical section, and in Fig. 2 a front elevation, of a machine containing my improvements.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both figures.
A is the base of the machine. B is a vertical post, the top of which is curved over the bed, and in which the cutting cylinder 0 is journaled in suitable bearings. To the post B is also attached the bracket N, on which the pulleys for transmitting motion to the bed are placed. D D are two guide-standards, which are grooved on the inside to receive the sliding frame E, to which the vibrating bed F is attached, at or near the bottom of the sliding frame E, by suitable connections, and arranged to vibrate in the sliding frame E by the connecting bar or pitman G, which is attached both to the upright part of the bed and to the crank-wheel H. The crankwheel H is placed on the same shaft with the friction-wheel I, and they are brought in contact with each other or disconnected by the wedge-clutch J, attached to the sliding frame E. The friction-wheel I is belted to a pulley, K, on the cutting-cylinder shaft. The foot-lever L is arranged to elevate the bed F, so as to bring the leather in contact with the cutting-cylinder 0. At the same time this is done, the friction-wheel I is forced into contact with the crank-wheel H by the clutch J, so that the vibratory motion of the bed commences with its elevation, and ceases when it is lowered.
A portion of the surface of the bed F may be shaped to correspond with the periphery of a circle, of which the point of attachment to the lower end of the sliding frame is the center, and the length of the circle formed on the surface of the bed in this way may indicate the length of the stroke, or the duration of the action of the cylinder upon the leather. v
The cutting-cylinder may be a series of spirally-formed teeth out upon a steel cylinder, as shown in the drawing, or a series of knives or cutters attached to a cylinder, as in cloths'hearing or other machines of like character. It is operated through the pulley M from any suitable motor, and should be run at a high rate of speed.
A suitable stop may be arranged on the sliding frame E, to adjust the height to which the bed is raised to operate properly on the leather.
The bed-plate may, in some cases, be arranged so as to receive a reciprocating instead of a vibratory motion.
The leather is placed on the bed-plate F. The bed is elevated by the lever L. The vibrating movement of the bed commences simultaneously with the raising of the bed. The leather is held by the operator by folding it down over the front edge of the bed. The motion of the bed, carrying the leather with it under and in contact with the cylinder, causes the cylinder to cut or whiten it, and the vibrating movement gives the operator time at each stroke to adjust and manipulate the leather under the cutter.
The speed of the cylinder should be very great, and the vibration of the bed should be as fast as will be convenient for the operator to properly handle the leather.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a machine for'whitening and buffing leather, the combination and arrangement of the rotary cutter O with the vibrating bed h and sliding frame E.
2. In a machine for whitening and buffing leather, the combination of the lever L with the clutch J and friction-wheel I, for raising and lowering the bed simultaneously with its vibrating movement.
