Description

M. E. TANDY PISTON CORE CHILL AND MOLD Filed Nov. 11, 1924 v gwmnto'c Maggie/mad;
Patented Feb. 23, 1926.
whit-TED MAYBEL E. TANDY, OF HANFORD, CALIFORNIA.
PISTON CORE CHILL Al l'D MOLD.
Application filed November 11 1924 Serial .No. 749,246.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lllAYBEL Tawny,
a citizen of the United Eitates, residing at llanford, in the county of Kings and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piston Core Chills and Molds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to me al founding and chiefly to the casting of metal pistons for internal combustion engines and provides a core chill and mold which may be readily assembled. and. easily taken apart after the piston has been cast, the core and mold being of metal and sustained. in proper position when assembled by means of a contering device, the latter also serving as means to facilitate the withdrawal of the core when removing the latter from the piston.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a piston core chill and mold embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a side view of the core.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral 10 denotes the body of the mold, 11 the base and 12 the cap, the latter having a centrally disposed opening and a boss 13 in line with the opening, both the cap and the base having its marginalportion countersunk to receive opposite ends of the body 10. The base 11 is provided with a central opening 14- to receive a centering pin 15 whereby the core is properly positioned and held from displacement. V
The core is 'of sectional. formation and may consist of cast iron, steel, copper or other suitable metal and comprises a center piece 16 and quarter sections 17, the center piece 16 forming a wedge to hold the quarter sections 17 in proper relationship to form the core. Half round notches 18 are formed in the meeting edges of corresponding quarter sections 17 and result in the formation of the bosses which receive the ends of the wrist pin, whereby the connecting rod is attached to the piston. A transverse slot 19 is formed in the upper end of the center piece 16 and registers with spaces20 formed. between the upper ends of corresponding core sections 1? and this slot 19 and spaces 20 receive the metal which forms the bracing web which connects the wrist pin bosses of the piston. The centering pin 15 is threaded into an opening 21 formed in the lower end of the center piece 16 and also serves as convenient means for withdrawing the center piece from the piston after the latter has been cast so that the quarter sections 1'? may be moved inwardly to clear the piston bosses preliminary to withdrawing the core sections 17 from the piston.
l i hat is claimed is:
1. A sectional chill and core for a piston casting mold the same comprising a center section and quarter sections at opposite sides of the center section, the latter being of wedge formation to. facilitate its Withdrawal, corresponding quarter sections having matching notches to form wrist pin receiving bosses and the quarter sections being applicable and removable by direct lat eral movement.
2. A sectional chill and core for a piston casting mold the same comprising a center section and uarter sections of substantially the same ength as the center section at opposite sides of the center section, said quarter sections being applicable and removable by direct lateral movement, corresponding quarter sections having matching notches to formwvrist pin receiving bosses, the center piece having a transverse slot in its upper end and the meeting edge portions of the quarter sections being cut away to provide spaces which register with said transverse slots whereby to forin a reinforcing web for said Wrist pin bosses.
3. A piston mold comprising a body, a
nipple or boss in line with said opening toj receive the molten metal when pouring, the piston.
l. A piston mold comprising; a. 'body', a cap, a lmsc' closing the bottom of said body, both the cap and base having marginal portions countersunk to receive corresponding ends of the body, the base having an opening to receive the centering pin of a core, and the cap having a central opening and e nipple or boss in, line with said opening to receive the n'i'olton metal when pore" piston, and a sectional core compri i :1 center piece of: Wedge lorm and (punter secter sections having matching notches in ()p posing sides and having portions cut away to provide recesses to register with the transverse slot in the upper end of the center piece;
