R. M. CLAPP SPOUT AND SEAL FOR CONTAINERS Filed April 28, 1924 gwuentor Patented Feb. 23, 1926.
annie ROBERT M. CLAPP, OF ALHAMBRA, CALIFORNIA.
SPOUT AND SEAL FOR CONTAINERS.
Application filed April 28, 1924.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Bonner M. Cmrr. a citizen of the United States, residing at Alhambra, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in spouts and Seals Y for Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a dispensing applicance for cans, of the type which is adapted to be attached to a can to serve as I a funnel and spout for facilitating removal of the can contents. t is customary in dispensing liquids from cans to punch two holes in the top of the can at diametrically opposite points, through one of which openh the liquid may flow when the can is tilt and through the other of which openings air may enter to replace the discharged liquid. 7 7
It is the object of this invention to provide a device which may be readily applied to a can and remain attached. thereto to serve as a spout for removal of the contents and also serve as a means for closing the openings of the can end for protection of the contents, and which may be readily re moved when desired.
Another object is to provide a device of the above character which is adapted to be formed in one piece whereby it may be manufactured at small cost.
lVith the foregoing objects in view, together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, my invent-ion resides in the parts and in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the invention as applied.
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section of the device, as seen on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view illustrating a modified form of the invention.
Figure 4 is a detail in perspective illus trating a modified form of one end portion of the device.
Referring to the drawings more specifically, 3 indicates a device embodying the present invention and 4 designates a can to which the device is adapted to be applied. The can is provided with an end wall 5 in which are punched an outlet opening 6 and Serial No. 709,432.
a vent opening 7 at diametrically opposite points; these openings being termed in the usual manner when it is desired to open the The novice 2-3 is preferably termed. from a single integral strip of metal whizh stri is formed with an elongated longitudinally attending opening or slot 8 to provide a pair of spaced side members 9 and H) which are adapted 'to extend across the top 5 of the can and to seat thereon; the side members 9 and 10 being slightly upturned at their end portions as indicated at 11 so as to form rece es 12 on the under side out the device adapted to receive the n'iargin of the can end wall :1 so that th intermediate portions of the side members 9 and. 10 will seat on the depressed surface with which can ends are ordinarily formed so that the under sides ot the side members 5) and 10 will contact the can end to close the openings (3 and 'i', as will presently be described.
The ends of the strip are formed with down-turned curved flanges 13 and 1% which are adapted to extend over and conform to the sides 01 the can. The outer ends ot the slot 8 terminate at the flanges 13 and 1% so as to expose the margin of the can end 5 along the inner faces of the flanges 13 and 1 1, so that when the device is placed on the can, as shown in Figure 1, the openings (3 and 7 will be exposed through the slot 8. The end of the slot 8 adjacent the flange 13 is upturned to form a lip or flange 15 which serves as a spout 1 the flange 15 being curved outwardly intermediate the side members 9 and 10 in continuation of the flange 13. I
In the operation of the invention the device is placed on the can as shown in Figure 1 and positioned to expose the openings 6 and 7 when it is desired to pour the contents from the can; the device being arranged with the spout 16 located adjacent the outlet opening 6. It will now be seen that on tipping the can to pour the contents through the opening 6 the liquid will be directed from the opening overthe spout 16. hen it is desired to close the openings 6 and 7, the device is turned on the can to position one of the side men'ihers 9 and 10 over the opening 6, whereupon the other side member will be positioned over the vent opening 7.
Vv hile I have shown the slot 8, as in Fig ures 1 and 2, as extending continuously between the end flanges 13 and 1 1, it is obvious that only the end portions of the slot serveithe purpose of exposing the openings 6 and 7, and only the end portions of the side members 9 and 10 serve to close the openings, and, accordingly, in some instances it may be desirable to form the device as shown in Figure 3; that is, with a top portion 17 having curved end flanges 18 and 19 corresponding to the flanges 13 and 14, and to provide openings 20 and 21 in the top member 17 adjacent the end flanges 18 and 19 to provide the spaces through which the openings 6 and 7 in the can end may be exposed.
of the device opposite the spout with a pair of spring clips 22 in lieu of the continuous curved flange 14; the clips 22 being formed in continuation of the side members of the aperture through which the opening 7 in the can end is exposed. Each of the spring clips 22 embodies a tongue 23 on a bow 2 conform to the margins of a can end, said strip being formed with an opening to expose holes punched in the can top, and a spout formed integralrwith the strip in continnation with one of the flanges and along the margin of the opening in the strip.
A device of the character described, crtas'lpi'ising a strip adapted to seat on the end of a can, said strip being formed with curved down-turned end flanges adapted to conform to the margins of a can end, said strip being formed with an opening to expose holes punched in the can top, and a spent formed integral with the strip in continnation *ith one of the flanges and along th margin of the opening in the strip, said 1 1p being recessed on its under side adjathe end flanges whereby the intermediate portion of the strip will seat on the surface of the can end.
