Description

Patented 4Fein-'16, 1926.
UNITED STATES ARTHUR SMITH (.'2ROSBY, OF MARLANI), OKLAHOMA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS T0 1,513,679 PATENT OFFICE. Y
AMERICAN IRON & MACHINE WORK-S, INC.,`OF TONXAWA, OKLAHOMA, A COR- PORATION OF OKLAHOMA. f
PARAFFIN CLEANER.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ARTHUR SMITH Cnos- BY, citizen of the United States, residing at Marland, in the county of Noble and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parafn Cleaners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompany'- ing drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve-- ments in paraffin cleaners and it is an ob-v ject of the invention to provide a novel and improved vdevice of this general character especiallyl designed and adapted for use in the cleaning of paraffin which may accumulate onthe tubing or casing of an oil well.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this 'genera cliaractercomprising an elongated member having wings pivotally connected thereto erebyu said wings yautomatically close whe the tool is being lowered into a well and pened to full size when the tool is raised and operating to clean ra'iin or( 'other foreign matter which may ave accu mulated on the well tubing or casing.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved paraiin cleaner whereby certain important advantages are attained and the de vice rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention Will hereinafter be denitely claimed.
ln order that my invention may be the better understood, Il will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a 'view in perspective illustratmg a paiailin cleaner constructed in accordance with an embodiment lof my invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section of the device as herein disclosed with the wings in extended osition;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the wings in closed position.
As herein disclosed, the cleaner comprises an elongated nieinber or rod M of requisite dimensions and having one end portion threaded, as at l, for connection with the tools or rods generally .used in cleaning wells. The square portion 2 immediately below the threaded portion 1 is to facilitate the proper application of a Wrench or kindred tool to break joint. The central 1portion of the member M and also at the ower end portion thereof is provided theref through with an opening 3, the lower or bottom Wall 4 of which being straight andl substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the 'member M. The upper Wall of the member M at opposite sides 'o1 its center is disposed on the reversed bevels or inclines 5 and the portion of the member M through which each of said openings 3 -is dis posed is reduced in thickness as is clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings..
Extending inwardly through the opposite l end portions of each. of the openings 3 is' an arm or lug 6 carried by the central portion of a scraping wing 7, said lugs having their inner or inserted Aend portions 'arranged side by side and pivotally engaged with the holding member 8, such as 'a rivet or the like disposed through the member M andthe inner or inserted end portions of the arms or lugs 6.
Eachof-the wings 7 1s substantially semicircular in form and of a radius toveirtendA beyond the vperiphery of the member M when in their lowermost position, said posi,- tion being maintained upon ,upward move 'ment of the memberM within a well. tubing or casing by contact with the bottom wall 4 of the coacting opening 3. 'However,
when the member'M is lowered within such y tubing or casing the wings 7 will swing upwardly as illustrated in Figure 3 so that the member may be readily dropped within the casing. Y
As the' member M is moved upwardly and the wings 7 are extended said Wings will contact with the inner walls of thetubing therefrom paraliin or other foreignfmatter which may have accumulated on such walls. Y,
As is particularly illustrated in Figure 'l the extremities of each ofthe Wings 7 rare gradually decreased in thickness yfrom above, as at 9, so vthat each pair of wings 7 will. have effective swinging movement with out hindrance or obstructionA being oeijed by one of said wings to the other.
constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility withwhich it may be assembled and operated, and` it Will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Withoutdeparting fromthe principles and spirit thereof and tor this reason l do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation ol the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:-
1. A scraper for a tubing or casing of an oil well comprising an elongated member provided with attaching means and having an opening therethrough, the bottom Wall of said opening being substantially at rightv angles to the longitudinal axis ot the member, the top Wallhaving its end portions reversely beveled, scrapmg Wings arranged at opposite sides 4of the member and provided With inwardly disposed arms extending Within the opening, and means for pivotally connecting the inserted end portions of said arms with the member for free swinging movement.
2. A scraper for a tubing or casing of an oil Well comprising an elongated member provided With attaching means and hav- .ing an opening therethrough, the bottom wall of said opening being substantially at right angles to the longitudinal aXis of the member, the top Wall having its end portions reversely beveled, scraping Wings arranged at opposite sides of the member and provided with inwardly disposed arms extending within the opening, and means for pivotally connecting the inserted end portions of said arms With the member `for free swinging movement, the portion of the member through which the opening is dis posed being reduced in thickness.
3. A scraper for a tubing or casing of an 'oil Well comprising an elongated member provided with attaching means and having an ripening therethrough, the bottom wall of said opening being substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axisof the member, the top Wall having its end portions reversely beveled, scraping Wings arrangedrat op osite sides of the member and provided Wit inwardly disposed arms extending Within the opening, and means :tor pivotally connecting the inserted end portions of said arms WithV the member for vided with inwardly disposed arms extending Wit-hin the opening, and means for. pivotally connecting the inserted end portions .70 at opposite sides of the member and pro# of said arms with the member for free swing 75 ing movement, said scraping Wings being substantially semi-circular in form and substantially surrounding the elongated memberwhen in their lowermost positions.
In testimonyrwhereofl hereunto aiix my signature.
