GRAVE MARKER.

Be it known that I, lViLLIAM F. NouMAN,

a citizen of the United States, residing at which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in grave markers, and is particularly designed as an improvement on the grave marker set forth in my Reissue U. S. Patent No. 14,827, dated March 30, 1920, and relates more particularly to the construction of the index or card carrying member and in a peculiar hinge or bead connection which renders the easy insertion and withdrawal of the index card and at the same time provides a'water proof hinge and easing.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a grave marker which has all the advantages of that set forth in my above mentioned application, that is, to provide a simple, inexpensive and cheap device, whereas in the present instance I provide a,

quick and easy means whereby the index card islnserted or removed and the parts 7 protected from the weather.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is'a perspective view of the complete marker.

Figure 2 is a section taken on line 22 thereof.

Figure 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Figure 1.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 5 designates the .supportmg staff or member which has attached by rlvets or otherwise the index or card carrying member 6. This member consists of a back 7 with a central depression 8 and a relatively flat rim 9, the edge of the upper rim being curled to form a head 10 and having the outturned side edges 11, while the lower edge is curved as at 12, the purpose of which will presently appear. The covering plate 13 is provided with the sight opening 1 formed in the of set portion 15 while surrounding the same is a relatively flat portion 16. The upper edge is provided with an enlarged open head 17 which is adapted to encase the bead 10 of the member 7 to form a hinged connection therewith and at the same time be sufficiently tight to prevent moisture from entering the casing or index carrier, while the side edges are provided with the snap flanges 18 which grip the flanges 11 of the member 7 Serial No. 41,656.

and hold the parts in the positions as clearly illustrated and with suilicicnt friction to prevent the accidental opening of the same after the marker is in place. The lower edge is provided with the curved portion 13) which accommodates the recess portion formed by the curve 12 of the member 7 so that the parts tit snugly together and are weather tight.

In assembling the two members of the card carrying portion of this marker, the interior head 10 is slid into the larger bead 17, the plates being held at substantially right angles during this operation, and the two oppositely extending and reduced lugs or projections a and Z), res 'iectively which are carried by the bead 17 at each end thereof, are then bent rcarwardly and over the ends of the two heads, and thus lock the hinge from sliding movement. This feature is an important one in a marker with this type of hinge, for when the plates are separated for the insertion of the new card, they are prevented from non-alignmcnt.

Adapted to fit within the depressed portion 8 of the member 7 is the index card 20 covered by a sheet 21 of glass the same abutting the covering plate 13 and being held in place by the friction of the two due to the gripping action of the flanges 11 and 18.

By providing the depressed portion 8 in the member 7 the card and glass are easily laid in position before the covering plate 1.3 is snapped into position.

From the foregoing description it is evident that a grave marker made according to and embodying the present invention provides a device which can be readily employed and also by making the covering plate hingedly connected by a water proof hinge as herein indicated that the marker while being temporarily used at the grave will be water proof and will properly protect the index card and hold it in place so it can be readily discernable.

\Vhat I claim as new is:

1. A grave marker including a rear plate having a hinging bead upon its upper edge throughout the length thereof, an apertured covering plate having a cooperative hinging bead throughout the length of its upper edge whereby when the plates are fitted to gether a tight joint is provided at the hinge, and two locking lugs carried at the respective ends of the head of the latter plate for extending across the ends of the head of the first plate to hold the plates against longitudinal displacement, and c0 operating {fiction gripping flanges carried by each plate for holding the plates coextensive and against accidental displacement.

2. A grave marker card carrying member, composed of two plates, the upper edge of each of Which is rolled to form an encased hinge the full length of the member, and two lugs carried by the memhei for fitting over 10 the ends of the hinge to hold the plates against longitudinal displacement. I
