UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL E. KA'YLER, F ALLIANCE, OHIO.
' mnrnonor s'rnirme DUCO AND THE 1.13m
No Drawing.
of Ohio, have invented a certain new and f useful Method of Striping Duco and the like, of whichth'e following is a specification. i
This inveiition relates to a method of 1 striping'lacquers such as duco which is the trade name oi a feroxiline material com: posedofnitrated cotton and various acetates, and usedextensively for' gcoating the body, fenders. and other sheet ;metal portions of automobiles. I 1
Thisduco is usually sprayed upon the automobileas owing to its very rapid drying qualities a brush cannot be successfully used in applying the same.
It is customary in finishing automobile bodies, fenders and the like to stripe certain portions of the same with a diiierent color for decorative purposes, With this duco it has been found fractically im ossible to paint a stripe of uco upon a bodycoating of duc'o, because the stripe when applied with a brush softens or dissolves the dy coat, causing the striping to run and merge with the body coat; i
For this reasonit is customary to stripe a bodycoat of duco, with an ordinary paint or enamel 'of a diiferent color, but since'paints or enamels 'do' 'not'have the wearing or elastic qualities of duco, the
striping soon wears oil in-places detracting from the appearance of the automobile:
The object of the present invention is to provide means for easily and accurately applying a stripe of one color of duco upon a body coat of a diflerent color of duco, Without permitting the sameto soften or merge with the body coat, thus overcoming ,'the difiiculty experienced by endeavoring to paint a stripe of duco upon a body coat- 4 ing of duco and avoiding the objections to painting with common paint or enamel upon a body coating of duco. i
In carrying'out the invention the body of the automobile or other object may be coat- I ed with duco of any desired color in the Application filed September 26, 1925. Serial No. 58, 751.
usual manner. Duco of any otherfldesired color is. then applied to the body coat in stripes at theplaces desired by means of a ruling pen. f,
An'ordinary'tWo-tine ruling pen such as 1s a commonly used by draftsmen, is best adapted for carrying out the striping operation the duco of the color to be used for striping being placed between the tines of the pen in the usual manner, and the pen ,drawn across the surface ofthebody coat" ing of duco.
, The tines of the pen just cut into the body coating sufliciently to: f grooves-or scores in the body the stripingcoat of do the pen and .filling the}! tween said grooves or-scoreswhioh prevent the striping coat from overrunning and merging with the body coat,';pro.ducing-a upon the body: coating of du co.
This method has been used extensively by rowiispace be in two parallel experiencethat a person with very little' training can uickly and neatly apply stripes of duco in this manner.
I claim: I 1 1 The method of striping duco and the like which consists in applying a stripe of one color of duco upon a body coat of 2. The method of striping duco. and -the like which consists in-applyinga stripe of one color of duco u on a body coatof another colorof duco y means of a twotine ruling pen;
3. The method of striping duco and the like which consists in forming parallel spaced scores or grooves in a body coat of duco and flowing duco of another color upon the body coat between said scores and grooves.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
SAMUEL E. KAYLER.
