Al TORNEY- Patented Feb. 16, 1926 UNITED STATES Ross A. riinnons, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
"VAPO -BATH CABINET.
Application filed July 7, 1923. Serial No. 650,067.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, Rose A. Pnnnons, a citizen of the "United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vapor-Bath Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ovens for treat-- ing humans, by a'baking or steam process for curative effects, and an object of the invention is to provide a table of the type specified which comprises a. supportingcabinet in which a plurality of body supporting bars are slidably mounted to permit them to be adjusted to properly distribute the heat and steam, to the body of the user for concentrating the treatment upon the affected part of the body.
Another object of this invention is to pr0- vide a cabinet structure as specified which is a complete unit in itself, and may be used independently of an outside steam supply, and also to provide an oven structure in which electric lights are provided to permit light treatment of a patient, all of the sockets and metal parts of the lighting fixtures being placed exteriorly of the cabinet.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through the cabinet.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section through the cabinet.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the cabinet.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved cabinet comprises a sup porting structure 1. The supporting structure 1 includes corner posts 2 which are connected by horizontally extending braces 3 of angle iron or other suitable material. The upper ends of the posts 2 are connected by angle irons l which extend about the sides and ends of the supporting structure and the cabinet 5 rests upon the horizontal portion 6 of the upper angle irons 4 and is supported thereon by the hanging engagement of the substantially inverted Ushaped channel members 7 formed about the sides and ends of the cabinet proper which engage over the vertical sides 8 of the upper angle irons l.
The cabinet proper comprises the body 10 which has horizontal longitudinal edge portions 11 that rest upon the angle irons 4 while it is concavely curved longitudinally, intermediate the horizontal edge portions 11, as clearly shown at 12. A steam pipe 13 which is bent'to assume a rectangular shape is positioned in the downwardly bowed concave bottom portion 12 of the body 10' and is provided with a plurality of upwardly opening perforations ll through which the steam issues into the cabinet. The pipe 13 has a pair of inlet pipes 15 connected thereto which extend downwardly into the tank 16. The tank 16 may be supported by the lower bracing bars 3 of the support structure l and the water 17 .therein may be heated from any approved type of burner as shown at 18 for creating steam which will rise upwardly through the pipes 15, and pass about in the pipe 13, and issue from the perforations 14.- therein upwardly so as to properly engage the body of a user of the cabinet, resting upon the bars 19.
The body supporting structure oi the cabinet comprises a plurality of movable bars 19 which may be constructed of any suitable material and have their ends resting upon the horizontal portions 11. The bars 19 may be adjusted to fit closely together, one against the other, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings or they may be adjusted with slight spaces between depending upon the portion of the body of a patient to be treated. If the entire body of a patient is to be treated all of the bars 19 are spaced slightly apart so as to allow the steam to issue therebetween; however, it only a certain portion of the body, for instance, it the small of the back is to be treated the bars beneath the portion of the body except the small of the back are all placed together, while a space is left between the bars beneath the small of the back of the patient so as to allow the steam to pass therethrough. A relatively wide plate 20 is provided which rests upon the horizontal side bars 1.1 and is adapted to be placed beneath a portion o l the body of the patient which should not be treated by any steam whatsoever; for instance, in case the patient has weak lungs or a tend-. ency towards tuberculosis the plate 20 is placed beneath the lungs so as to protect them from the steam issuing upwardly from the pipe 13.
A substantially trusto-pyramidal cover 21 is hingedly connected, as shown at 22 to one side of the cabinet body 10 and fits over the top of the cabinet body -lor enclosing the body of a patient. The cover 21 is limited in its open hinged movement by means of a bar 23 which is pivotally connected to the cabinet as shown at 2 1 and extends through a guide 25 on one end of the body 10. The
bar 23 has a pin 26 carried thereby for engagement with the guide 25 to limit the opening movement of the cover. The cover is provided with a head opening 27 in one end thereof which head opening may be closed by the head rest 28, if desired. The head rest 28 is pivotally supported from the body 10 as shown at 29 and it is adjustably held in head supporting position by means of an adjusting bar 30 which is pivotally connected as shown at 31 to the head rest and has its lower end notched for engagement over a bar 33 carried by the sup porting structure 1. The cabinet body 10 may be provided with a di ain opening 34 which may drain the condensed steam from the cabinet body back into the tank 16.
If it is so desired, electric light bulbs l-O may be carried by the top of the cover 21 and in such cases, the sockets and all metal parts of the bulbs are placed cxtoriorly of the cover with only the bulbs extending into the cabinet, which bulbs are preferably protected by thin fine mesh screen so as to prevent injury to the patient in case of breakage of the bulbs.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a device as set forth, a supporting 1 portions of the angle irons.
In testimony whereof I my signature.
