WILLIAM C. KRAUSE, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCCNSIN.
PRESSURE BRANDING MACI-INE.
Application filed June 27, 1.924` Serial No. 722,733,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, lVILLL-mi C. Krause, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, 1n the county of Milwaukee jot f uf, a' j 1-1 anc o ,ate o isconcin, raw, ini en cc cci tain new and useful improvements iuV Pressure Branding Machines; and l. do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. s
My invention refers to branding irons and particularly that type wherein an electr-ic heating element is utilized in connection with the platen, as it isV disclosed in my patent, dated January l5, 1924, Number insides. i
The specific object of my present invention is to provide a frame for the platen embodying a cam controlled means for applying pressure to the branding iron upon a supported container.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for adjusting the device whereby containers of different dimensions may be confined and branded.
Another object of my invention is to provide oppositely disposed branding iron platens with means for yielding and supporting a container therebetween, whereby both ends or sides of the container are simultaneously branded incidentally to power being applied to one of the branding irons. A further object of my invention is to provide oppositely disposed companion irons having means for simultaneously dra-wing the same towards. each other, whereby the container is branded upon both sides or ends.
lVith the. above and other minor objects in view the invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a front elevation of a branding iron machine, embodying the features of my invention.
Figure 2, a detailed cross section, illustrating means for clamping the branding iron or platen to a rigid post, the section being indicated by line 2--2 of Figure L Figure is a side elevation of the machine with parts broken away and other parts in section to more clearly illustrate the. details of construction, and
Figure 4, a sectional plan view of the machine, the section being indicated by line il-4 of Figure 3.
Referring by characters to the drawing,
l represents a bed provided with oppositely disposed adjustable clamping plates 2 for 60 detachably securing therebetween a branding iron platen 2l.
The details of construction of this platen forms no part of my presenty invention and it is preferably similar in construction to the one previously patented. by me and referred to above, the said patent being provided 'with an electric element for heating saine.
with downward extending feet d, which are gripped between the plates 2 and the type carried by this platen may be arranged to represent any arbitrary set of indices.
Projecting upwardly from the bed l and slidably guided therein, are four spring controlled plungers 5, which plungers serve to support, at their upper end, a skeleton frame. This frame forms a bed piece for the container to be branded, which bed X, will be positioned slightly above the face of the platen type to be sunorted b the bed ll y The bed has extended upwardly there` from a vertically disposed post 9, to which is adjustably secured a bracket l0, the
bracket being vprovided with a split hub 10 which is rigidly clamped to the post at any desired elevation. rlhe bracket is also provided with a barrel l1, the bore of which has mounted therein a spring controlled plunger 12. The lower end of the plunger carries a head l2 to which is pivotally secured to an upper platen 3', which platen is associated with lower platenk 3, the said platens being oppositely disposed and properly aligned. The upper end of the plunger 12 carries a center friction roller 1.3, which roller is engaged by a cam la that is pivotally mounted between ears l5, which constitute upper projections of the barrel. The u lt will beissen that the platen is provided 70 Hence, it will be seen that the re- 85 CII Cain 14 is formed with a handle le whereby power inay be applied to the sain-.for rocking or rotating the saniein opposition to the spring controlled plunger. From the foregoing description it will be` seenrthat owing to the various adjustments of the branding iron machine, boxesot d-iiierent dimensions can be readily branded.
ln a branding operation, a fboX, indicated at Y, is first adjusted to the supported bed 6 between flanges of the rails- 8 and against the stop 7.
The platen being secured7 the operator roekstheeain liet through its lever extension, whereby the; upper platen S is caused to travel downwardly, engaging the upper face ot' the container Y and further pressure will then cause the` container Y to travel downwardly in opposition to the spring con trolled plungers 5. This action will cause the lower i'ace of the box to `come into con tact Yith the face of thetype of the lower 1 It will also be observed that if-desired, two
boxes niay be stacked between the branding` elements upon the supporting bed, and; 1n
each case the said two bo-Xeswill be branded simultaneously upon one face only.
Although the particular type et electric heater employed tor theA branding platen iornis no part of this invention, `as regards its specific details, it is to be noted, never- Y theless, that. by` the use ofelectrieally heated tical branding machine ininutely as to de;
tails, it is understood that details without departing of niy invention7 as eonie ofthe olaini.
