VALVE-FACING IVIACI-ILNE.
Application filed May 3l, 1923. Serial No. GMATQ This invention relates more particularly to that class of machines which are used to tace or r-etace valves and for internal combustion engines.
The objects of our invention are to provide yan exceedingly simple and `ei'licient valve facing machine Which will easily and quickly tace or rcface a valve concentrically With the axis of the valve stem.
A further object `is to provide a means tor setting the attachment to grind valves at various angles.
il. still further oh-jcct is to provide a. wheel truing attachment to he used in conjunction with the facing attachment, and which will keep the tace ot' the grinding whcelparallcl to its axis. Y
Still another ohjcct is to `provide a special valve rotating crank which will pci-init a tight grip on the val-ve stein Without l'uiving the parts thereoiE interfering with the valve stem supports. Y i f These and other minor objects will he more fully explained in the specification 'following. j l le accomplish these `results in the manner set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying draWings7 in which.: j i

the same or similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawings, ive have constructed our device on a regular grinding Wheel stand 2O which carries the 60 spindle 2l which, in turn, is driven through the pulley coupled to the spindle 2l hy the spl-ine 28 Within the pulley The loose pulley 9A carries the drive -helt not ln one end ot' the spindle 2l 4We 65 have turned a groove 25 in which is placed the curvedpieces 2G Which iill the grooves.
A sleeve Q7 slips over this end oit the shaztt and completely covers the pieces 2G. Screws 9.8 pass through the sleeve 27 and into the 70 members Q6. rlhe projecting 'lugs 29 are provided iv ith a pin 30 on which is pivoted the hand lever 3l Whose end 32'is hinged to the linl; 33 secured hy the screivll in the spindle journal The usual grinding wheel 36, collars 37, and nutfll are used. In some cases the nutlS is replaced hy a` chuck 39 whose shank Il() is threaded to take the place oit the nutySS. i
A slotted bracket iil is iforn'icd. on `the side S0 oit the iframe 2O near the wheel k3G and to this hy means ot' the holt 1l-2 are attached either the Wheel truing attachment or the' valve -tacing attachment. The truing at*` tachinent consists of an arm i3 pthrough Which the holder fil-i lorthe diamond point l5 passes. The holder is secured hy means ot the set screw flo.
vThe facing atliaclunent consists oi' an arm 47 which engages thelnaclret Lil. Project- 90 ing troni. the arm et? is a horizontal tahle i8 and hava loolti9 passing through said table and having pivoted thereon a horizontal hase 50 which may he indexed in any desired position by a'spring-urged95 hall 5l within said hase and which engages various countersinks in the table il-8 as thc hase 50 is rotated on the holt 4:9.
.A pair of V hloclt standards are -formed on the upper side of the base 50 100 and these are spaced. to receive valves 53V ranging from the longest to the shortest valves in common use` The post 54 also rises from the hase 50 and carries a screw 55 having a knurled head 56. The end of the screw 55 is provided With a point 57 to which it is loosely attached to permit the point 57 to find the center ,of the different sizes of valves.
A pair of slidahle rods pass through the hase 50 opposite .the standards 52 and p however, is immaterial as long as some form of friction device between the. clamp and eccentric shai t isL provided.
A lever 67 is secured to the. shaiftfin a manner that when in its uppermost position it is against the valve stem, at which time the clamps 6st hold this stem down against the V Vblocks 52 under the tension of the springs r9. l/Vhen the lever 67 is pulled outward the hooks 65 are raised to disengage them from the valve stem. Any fur.- ther moivementfdraws the hooks 65 sideways, owing to the friction between the clamp and eccentric shaft. rthis action, it will be understood, takes place as soon as the hooks 65 clear the valve stem, and continues until the pins 66 strike the base 50.
The valve stem is rotated by the handle 68 attached to a block 69, over which is slidably placed a il-shaped clamp 70 secured by the rivet '4'1 and has a stud bolt 71A in the bloc-lr 69 which passes through the V-shaped clamp 70. A spring 7 2 holds the V clamp 'TO and the block 69 apart and the wing nut. 73 ouvth-e bolt 71A permits -the clamping of the device to the valve stem end;
The operation of our deviceis as Jfollows: A valve is placed in the chuclr 39, as shown in Fig. `G, and the carbon removed while the valve is rotated. The valve' is the-n placed in the V blocks 52 and the lever 67 brought to the position shownin Fig. 3. rlhe point 57 is then placed in the valve center and the screw rotated to bring the face of the valve toward the Vface of the grinding wheel 36, during which timev the handle 68 is turned at a .uniformv rate-of speed. rlhis is important. The screw 55 is i'ed'forward until the valve isv properly faced when the screw is backed oll, during which time a slight pressure is exerted by the operator against the handle 68 in thel direction'of the screw 55, which causes the valve stein to slidein the V blocks and the valve itself to clear the grinding wheel 36.
Nearly all valves arefaced at 41:5 degrees to the axis of their' stem. rlhe base 50 is clamped when indexed by the ball 5l for this and other positions which areindexed on the table 48 byr placing countersinls in the path of travel of the hall v51. Different portions 'o'l' the wheel 36ma-y be presented to the valve 53 by operating the lever 3l, and the wheel itself should be occasionally trued by replacing thev facing attachment with the truing attachment and moving the wheel along against the diamond point.
It desired a belt shifter for the belt which runs on the pulleys 22 and 24; may be provided on the stand 2O instead oi placing same overhead, without departing from the spirit of our invention. Y L
41We are aware that many 'forms of valve' facing machines have beenV constructed in the past, we therefore intend to cover only such forms and modifications as fall fairly within the appended claim; A
that we claim as new is:
' The combination of a stand having a grinding wheel slidably Lmounted thereon with a valve facing attachment consisting of a swinging table attached to said stand; a pair ot V blocksA on said stand adapted to support a valve horizontally; a eedscrew on said table having an extended. point loosely joined to its en'd and adapted to engage the. center o'l a valve ;y a vclamp for said valve consisting oi aV pair ot slide rods pass.
ing through said table and having springs on their lower-ends and bearings on their upper ends; an eccentric shaft ournaling in said bearings; and a pair of hooks mounted on said shaftadapted to clamp over the valvev stem under the tension of said springs whensaid shaft is rotated to one of its eXtreme positions.
