' J. ZIMMER AUTOMATIC FUEL CUT-OFF FOR GAS STOVES Filed NOV. 8, 1924 3 Z cz/m 227m Patented'FehZ, 1926.
JOHN ZIMMER, or
PATENT OFFICE.
TROY, NEW YORK.
AUTOMATIC FUEL CUT-OFF FOR GAS STOVES.
Application filed November To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ZIMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in an Automatic Fuel Cut-Off for Gas Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to gas stoves of the cooking type and has more particular reference to an automatic means for cutting off the supply of fuel when a pan or other cooking utensil is removed from the burner.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and etficient device for attachment to practically all form of gas cooking stoves whereby there will be no liability of the gas escaping should the usual gas control valve he accidentally opened or left open. I
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood the invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangementof parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the views:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan View of a conventional form of gas cooking stove equipped with my novel automatic cut off, and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary section show ing my device in side elevation.
Now having particular reference to the drawing a portion of a conventional form of gas cooking stove is shown, the same including the usual base or frame 5, a burner element 6, a cooking utensil. supporting plate 7 and a gas pipe 8 that has communication with the burner element 6 through the medium of a branch pipe 9 that is provided with the usual knob actuated control valve 10. 3 My inventionper se consists in the provision of a valve unit 11 that is inserted in the branch pipe 9 between the fuel pipe 8 and burner element 6. Associated with the usual core of a valve unit of this type is an arm 12 that extends lnwardty 8, 1924. Serial No. 748,712.
beneath the utensil supporting plate 7 and the end of said arm terminates above and in spaced relation to said plate. The opposite end of this arm is provided with a. heavy weight 13 that normally maintains the arm in the position shown more clearly in Figure 2, this position of the arm main taining the valve 11 closed. However, when a utensil is disposed upon the support 7 over the burner 6 the same will engage the projecting end of the arm and swing the same downwardly which movement will occasion the opening of the valve 11 for allowing the gas to pass into the burner 6, it being necessary to first open the valve 10.
If desired the arm 12 may be so attached to the core of the valve 11 as to always permit a small amount of gas to flow into the burner when the valve 10 is open and a pilot light could. thus be provided.
I do not wish to be limited to the specific structural details shown and described inso' much as in the future practice of the invention minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the ll1\'11tl011,\Vl11h I claim'is:
In a stove of the character described, a burner element, a utensil support having an opening above the burner, a fuel supply pipe leading to the burner element, a valve in said pipe and having a rockable control member the axis of which is horizontal, and a one piece lever fixed at an intermediate point o'f'its length with respect to the said rockable control member of: the valve and extending at right angles thereto and having an arm extending through the opening in the utensil support and normally extend ing to a point in a plane spaced above the upper side of the utensil support and also having an integral weight on its outer arm, the first-named arm of. the lever and the utensil support being so relatively arranged that the bringing up of the lever against said support stops the rockable control member in closed position.
In testimony whereof I aflix mysignature.
JOHN ZIMMER.
