Description

Patented Nov I JV VENTOR.
Attorneys WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN 0. FORD, OF MONTREAL, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PASTERN-HALTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,122, dated November 24, 1874; application filed September 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN 0. FORD, of Montreal, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain Improvements in Pastern-Halters; and I do hereby declare the following .to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view, showing my improved pastern-halter applied to use. Fig. 2 is a top view, partly in section, of my improved clasp. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a modified form of the locking-cam. Fig. 4 is a section of the strap-eye of the locking-cam on an enlarged scale.
The same part is marked by the same letter wherever it occurs.
I received, July 14, 187 4, a patent for a clasp for pastern halters, consisting of two jaws hinged together, and provided with a thumblatch for locking them, said clasp being provided at the hinge with a strap-eye for the reception of one end of the halter-strap. By this construction when the halter was in use the hinge was brought to the rear of the pastern under the fetlock, and the opening of the clasp was at the front of the horses foot.
The objects of my present improvements are to bring the hinge of the clasp on the front of the toot and the opening to the rear, to change the method of locking the clasp, so as to make it more secure from accidental disengagement. .My invention consists in looking the clasp by means of a cam or eccentric, provided with a strap-eye for the reception of one end of the halter-strap, as described and represented.
The clasp of my improved halter is made of metal, preferably of brass or malleable iron, and consists of the jaws A and B, hinged at O, and united by a tongue, D, and lockingcam E. The tongue D passes under the cam when it is open, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and is locked in position by drawing on the strap F, so as to bring the'cam into the position shown by full lines in Fig. 2. A stop, 8. on the back of the cam limits its motion, and prevents it from jamming. The free end of the cam I form into a strap-eye, c, having a cross-bar, b, with a tongue, 25, which passes through a hole in the end of the strap F, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4.
If -a plain strap-eye is used, as shown in Fig. 3, the end of the strap has to be turned back and riveted or seweda less convenient mode of attachment.
In Fig. 3 I show a modification of the locking device by the addition of a coiled spring around the axis of the cam, whose reaction tends to keep the cam in position to lock the clasp.
In Fig. l is shown the end of the halter attached to the shaft of a vehicle by means of the snap-hook I-I engaging with an eye, K, attached to the under side of the shaft. I form the end of the hook H into an eye or buckle, L, provided with a fixed or movable tongue, as may be preferred, for the attachment of the hook to the strap.
I claim as my invention- In a pastern-halter clasp, having the halterstrap attached at the end or side opposite to that at which the jaws are hinged, the combination of the jaws A B, tongue D, and locking-cam E, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my said invention signed and witnessed at Montreal this 3d day of September, 1874.
