Description

nNrrsn sTATns PATENT ornrcn. u
F. NOETTE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CUTTING V.AND DRAWING WIRE.
l Specification of` Letters `Patent No.\15,705, datedvSeptember 9, 1856.
To aZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, `F. Non'r'rn, of the` ment. Fig. 2, is a plan `or top view of ditto.
Fig. 3, is an end View of ditto. Fig. 4:,.is a vertical section of a portion of ditto, X X, Fig. 2, showing the plane of section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts inthe several figures.
My invention consists in the employment or use of certain devices or parts,` constructed, arranged and operating conjointly as will be hereinafter fully shown and `described, wherebythe wire is cut froma circular metall plate and drawn; as cut, through the usual draw` plates by a reel or drum.
To enablethose skilled in the `art to-fully understand "and construct my invention, 'I will `proceed to `describe it.
A,represents a framinghaving a bed or platform B, on its upper part.
C, Arepresents `a horizontal shaft which worksin `suitable bearings in the framing A. This is the driving Ishaft Aand has a bevel wheel a, upon it, which wheel gears into `acorresponding wheel Z), on a shaft D, the shaft D, having a pinion c, onits outer end, which pinion gears into atoothed wheel E, at the side of the framing A, said wheel E, gearing into a wheel F, at one end of a shaftG, which has a circular cutter H, at the opposite end.
On the shaft G and adjoining the wheel F, there is placed a pinion I, which gears into a corresponding pinion J, on a shaft K, which has a circular cutter L, on its end, the edges of the two cutters H L, slightly overlapping each other, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. Each cutter has a roller (Z, at its side and these rollers bear upon or against a circular metal plate M, from which the wire is cut, (this plate is shown in red) one roller bearing against the upper and the other against the lower side of the plate.
The plate M, Fis placed upon a vertical spindle N, the `upper and lower bearings of which are attached to racks O, O, which are the framing A. Y
Q, is a vertical shaft having a pinion e, `at both ends, which pinionsgear intolthe racks O, O. To the lower end of the shaft Q, abevel wheelfR, is attached This wheel It, gears into a corresponding wheel S, on a `shaft T, which shafthas aratchet U,upon
it, andalso a *lever V, havinga weight f, on its upper end. Tothe lever V, a pawl g, is attached, said pawl catching `into the -To the framing A, "an adjustable `gage rollerlzf, is attached and the edge of the'circular jplate `M, bears against this roller, which determines the'thickness of the wire or the width of the strip which is cut from the plate M, by the circular cutters H, L.
From the above description of :parts it will be seen, that when motion is given` the shaftC, the two cutters A, L, will rbe rotated by the gearing, (1,5, c, E, F, I, J, and said cutters will cut a `strip 01T from the `plateM,the rollerz., being `so adjusted that the stripimay be of the required width, and the edge of theplat-ebeing kept againstthe roller fh, bythe` weightedlever V, pawl and ratchet g, yU, racksOfO, and shaft Q,with pinions e upon it, which pinions e gear into said racks; the strip beingcut spirally from theperiphery to thecenter of saidLplateM.
The inner end of the shaft`O,has a bevel `pinion, z', upon it, lwhichpinion gears `into a bevel wheel N, on a vertical shaft A. The wheel N, is placed loosely onthe shaft A',
and works on afeather y',so that it will turn with its shaft and stillbe allowedto slide up and down upon it.
The lower end of the shaft A is stepped in a block B', and has a pinion 7c, upon it, and through the block B, two screw rods Z, Z', pass vertically, the lower parts of said screw rods passing through and working in internal screw threads cut in a plate C', attached to the lower part of the framing A. The screw on one rod is out in a reverse di- Y rection to that on the other and the screw rods have pinions ax, upon them which gear into each other.
On the upper parts of the rods Z, Z, pinions m, m, are placed one on each rod. These pinions are placed loosely on the rods and fitted on feathers so that the rods may work up and down through them.
To one side of the block B al lever D',
i fitted tohorizontalplates P, P, attachedto is attached, one end of which is fitted in a vertical slotted bar E', attached to the framing, the end of the lever being fitted between adjustable bolts n, n, which pass transversely through the slotted bar E'. The lever D', has a vertical arm F' attached to it at its aXis, said arm having a pin 0 on its upper end, the pin being fitted in a slotted plate p, attached'to the end of a horizontal bar G', which is pivoted to an upright lever H' having a weight Q, at its upper end, see Fig. l.
To the upper end of the shaft A', a roll or drum I' is attached. This drum is formed of two circular disks r, s, one of which, s, is attached permanently to the shaft and has staves t, attached to it, t-he lower ends of the staves having beads or cylindrical projections u, upon them which beads lit in an annular groove u', in the disk, so that the staves may be inclined inward, when the upper disk r, is raised, said disk being placed loosely on the shaft A', and having an annular gro-ove o, made in it to receive the upper ends of the staves and keep them in proper place. The upper parts of the staves have each a hooked projection w, on their inner sides, in which hooked projections an elastic band w, is fitted to prevent the staves from falling outward when the upper disk r, is raised.
J', represents draw plates of usual construction which draw plates are fitted within a suitable stock on the bed or platform B.
The end of the strip which is cut from the plate M, is attached to the reel or drum I', which is rotated simultaneously with the plate M, by means of the gearing z', W, and the strip, as it is cut from the plate M, is drawn through the draw plates J', by the reel or drum I', said strip being rounded and formed into wire thereby and. wound upon the reel or drum.
As the reel or drum rotates, it is `raised and lowered gradually, so that the wire may be wound evenly upon it from its lower to its upper end This movement of the reel or drum is effected by the gearing below or at the lower end of the shaft A', the pinions m, m being thrown alternately in and out of gear with the pinion lc, by means of the lever D', which is connected with the pinions m, m, and operated in consequence of the rising and falling of the block B', in connection with the weighted lever II' and the slotted bar E.
The 'wire is removed from the reel or drum by raising the upper disk r, thereby allowing the staves to collapse or incline in ward. lVere this device or construction of the reel or drum not used, it would be eX- tremely difficult to remove the wire from the reel as it is wound tightly around it in consequence of the power required to draw the strip through the draw plates J Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. I claim feeding the circular plate M to the circular cutters H, L, and gaging the same by means of the racks O, O, shaft Q, with pinions e, attached to the pawl and ratched G, U, weighted lever V, or equivalent, and gage roller h, arranged as herein shown and described.
2. I claim operating the reel or drum I', or giving it a vertical vibratory movement by means of the right and left screwvrods Z, Z, with pini'ons m, m, attached and made to gear alternately into the pinion 7c, on the shaft A', by means of the block B' lever D', bar G', and weighted lever H' arranged as shown and described.
3. I claim the reel or drum I', when constructed as shown, so that it may be compressed or contracted, to allow of t-he ready removal of the wire from its periphery.
F. NOETTE.
