Description
Jama 1926.
M. ECHANDLER AIR CLEANER Filed Sept. 9. 1921 wmmm Patented Jan. 19, 1 926.
rumor It; cnmmmn, or cmcaeo, more I 6 Illinois, have invented useful Improvement in I To all-whom it concern:
Appllcation filed September Be it known that I, MILTON E. Grumman,
a citizenof the United -States,'residing at. Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of which the a certain new'and Air Cleaners, of
followin is a full, clear, 001N189,
and exact description, reference being had to the acompanying drawings, form ng a part of this speoifi cation.
My invention relates to [cleaning devices,
. and more for cleaning gases by the separation therelower edge of cylindrical portion 22, which lip is perforated as at 28.
A lower de melt and dischar e chamber bcl w the ba e 20 is defined from of dust and sion there specifically to an improved device ther material in suspen- One object of my invention is to improve the functioning of devices'of this sort.
Another object is to simplify and cheapcn the constr Further objects and advantages'of the inuction thereof. 1
vent-ion will become apparent-as-the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings:
. Figure.
1 is a sectional view of'a device constructed according to the principles of Fi remv'invention, and
Figure 2 is an enlarged detailed section.
3 is a fragmentary plan view rho wing the arrangement of the inlet guides.
In the lccied for a cylindrical part. 12 and a conical embodiment of my invention seillustration, the shell 10 comprises ortion 14 terminating in a short cylindricaFlip 16 having an diaphragm or baille 2O outwardly turned flange 18. The
comprises a cylin- Idrical portion 22 cooperatingwith part 16 to form a nan-ow annular space,,and extending somewhat above the upper. end of part 16, crowned by a conical cap 24, the wallsof which, in this instance, make an angle of 60 with the axis of the cone.
outwardly turned lip 26'projects'from the y a lower she 1 comprising a conical portion 29, it cylindrical portion 30 and a final cone 32. The
upper edge of cone 29 is headed around lips 18 ,and 26 firmly together.
as at 34 to fasten all three pieces A tubular ejector iorniedof-sheet'metal stampings tion 30 o is clamped to the cylindricalport the lower shell. This ejector.
Air or. gas enterin 4 forms a rapidly whirling bod-y -.within shell thrown to the outside a as the whirling. mass a, 1921'.-' Serial in. 499,451..
comprises a lateral inlet 36 the end of which surrounds cone 32, and a fdownwardly directed venturi 38, the throat of which is substantially in the same plane as the open lower end of cone: 32.
The cylindrical portion 12 of shell 10 is surmounted b a ring 40 sup orting a pluralitv of be e or inlet guides 42 ho'used within a peripheral screen 44. Guides 42 (see Figure 3) are shaped to define a plurality of tangentially directed passages enteringthe upper chamber defined by said guides and by shell 10. The top of the chamber is defined bycover'plate 45, sup orting a discharge tube 46, projecting belbw the plane of inlet guides 42, and in this instance terminating in laterally1 directed elbow.
The operation of t e between guides 42 10, whereby suspended matter of greater specific gravity than the body of gas is ainst walls 12, and, escends, against the inclined :wall 14. The; gas is now deflected by walls 14 and cone 24 to form a rising column in the center of the device which makes its exit through tube 46. Solid material, or any material of greater specific ravity than. the medium-passing through the device, is thus deposited'and finds its device is as follows:
way into the'annular space between the cylincrical- walIs 16 and 22, falling through orifices 28 into the, lower chamber.
Eiector action in venturi 38 maintains sullicientvacuum at the-opening of cone 32 to insure aconstant How of a relativel small quantit of as downwardly through orifices28 an the ower'chamber. The material deposited is thus positively drawnvor throw-n downward through the lower chambet and finally ejected.
=W'ihe'n 'the device 15 used. in connection with' an internal combustion engine, part or all of the exhaust gases are made to pass through the ejector, and the'inlet of the en ine is connected to tube 46'.-
Wit-hout'further elaboratibn, the foregoing will so .fully explain the, gist of my mvention, that others may, by applying cur-.
rent knowled'ge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service,
without eliminating certain" features which as Pr y is 99 m t sential items of novelty involved, which items are intended to be defined and secured tome by the following claims.

7. In a'device of the kind described, a sheet metal truncated done. a sheet metal conical member for continuing the cone. a sheet metal partition arranged at the juncture of the two parts ofthe cone, the two parts having interlocked flanged edges at their adjacent edges engaging and clamping the outer edge of the partition for securing it in place.
'8. In a cleaner, a shell having an axial .outlet and a substantially continuous pely, and
a narrow annular screen outside said guides to steady the flow. 9, A cleaner having, in combination, two chambers in open communication, one chamber terminating in an open frustuin of a cone with its small end outermost, and asheet metal casing gripping the walls or said chamber adjacent the base of the cone, said casing defining a Venturi passage with its throat adjacent to'the end of said chamber, and'a lateral inlet enveloping the end portion thereof. i
10. In a device of the kind describec a sheet metal casing having a reduced lower end provided with acylindrical portion, a sheet metal connection for the lower end thereof adapted to be clamped to said cylindrical portion and to provide a Venturi tube surrounding the discharge opening of the casing, said connection formed witha side opening between its endsfor receivig a pressure supply pipe, and said connection adapted to be clamped to said pipe.
