COMBINATION BURNER AND GENERATOR.
Application filed January 2, 1923, Serial No. 610,086. Renewed October 22, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that CHARLES C. RICHARDSON, citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Burners and Generators, of which the following is a specification.
' The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination generators and burners.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of an apparatus such as above noted, which employs means for heating, mixing and then superheating a plurality of liquids to form a gas which is thenburned in the said device, which may be installed within a heater or stove of any desired type, serving as a substitute for the customary coal or other fuel now used.
Another object of th invention is the provision of an apparatus such as above referred to, which consists of a series or plurality of detachable counterpart units, which may be added toor taken away from as desired to accomodate the device to stoves of different sizes, thereby increasing or decreasing the volume of heat produced in accordance with the necessary requirements.
A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a combination burner and generator, which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efiicient in use, and readily operated.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the present invention resides in the certain novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying draw-- ings in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatical view showing one form of installation;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of an assembly of units;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the invention;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view thereof;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view showing the means of connecting the units; and,
Figure 6 is a side elevation thereof.
Referring noW to the accompanying drawings by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 1 denotes 111 general a furnace which may be of any well known type, and in Which my combination burner and generator installed. This device is designated by 2 and rests upon the usual grate.
This combination burner and generator consists of a boiler 4 and a plurality of units 5. The former is of elongated formation and may be of any preferred shape and size, while the latter comprises a series of U-shaped members 6 having angular heads 7, the latter of which are connected by nlpples 8, which connect the interior passages 9 of the said members 6, alternately at their upper and lower sides as clearly shown at Figure 5.
The pipe 10 leads to a supply tank 18 for the water, while the pipe 11 leads to a tank 19 for the oil. This first mentioned tank is connected with the usual supply or water line, under the control of the ball cook 20.
A flash pan 21 may be used for priming the device for starting, or gas may be piped as at 22 to the burner pipes 23 which lie under the boiler and units. The gas pipe is shown at 24.
The burner pipes 23 may be connected to the units 5 at any suitable point.
In operation, the boiler and units are first heated either by means of the flash pan or gas and the oil and water are turned on, the water flowing into the boiler and the oil into the units, into which the steam passes, mixing with the oil vapors. This combined mixture is mixed and super-heated forming a gaseous mixture which then burns in the spaces between the boiler and units. It will be noted that the pressure forces the gas with sufiicient force so that it does not burn at the openings in the burner pipes but considerably above the same, hence eliminating all carbon formations that might tend to clog these said openings.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
it will he manifest that a combination burner and generator is provided, which will fulfill all of the necessary requirements of such a device, and it should be understood in this connection, that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to Within the scope of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having; thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to-protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A generator unit comprising a' U-shaped body portion having the ends thereof squared, the opposite side faces of said ends having an opening, therein, and the opposite side faces of said unit arranged to contact with the faces of a second unit, said unit having the squared ends thereof disposed in parallel relation relative to each other.
2. A generator unit comprising a body portion having the ends thereof squared, the opposite side faces of said squared ends having an opening therein, said faces being oppositely disposed and adapted for connection to a side face of a second unit.
3. In a device such as described, the com-- bination of a plurality of U-shaped units having squared heads and means for alternately connecting the heads of the units to form a continuous passage Within the same.
4. The combination in a device such as described, of a plurality of U-shaped units having angular heads, means for alternately connecting the said headstoforni a continuous passage therein, means for feeding oil and Water to said units, and means forheatinn, vaporizing. mixing and supcrheatingthe oil and Water to form a as.
5. In a device such as described, the cinnbination of a pluralit of (ilctachuhle U shaped units arranged on edge, means for connecting" the alternate ends of the units and means for feeding liquid fuel thereto to form a gas.
(3. In a generator such as described, a plurality of U-shaped units having; the ends of each unit arranged one above the other, and means for connecting the upper and lower ends of said units alternately to form a tertuous passage throughout the generator.
