`Application filed May 9, 1925. Serial No. 29,024.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known thatl I, PAUL B. STREICH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Joliet, Will County, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil Burners, of which the following is declared to. be a full, clear, and exact description.
`This invention relates to oil burners, and its principal object is to increase the eiliciency of oil burners. Another object is to provide an oil burner in which practically perfect combustion takes place, whereby carbon deposits areeliminated, and whereby n a maximum heat is obtained from a mini-` mum supply of fuel. Another object is to yminimize `the roaring sound which usually Amodified form of the burner.
Referring to said drawing, and first to Figs 1 and 2, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention, the reference charatcer 5 designates a circular cup or pan like burner body, and 6 a top plate spaced from the upper edge of the burner body 5 to leave an annular narrow discharge slot or slit 7 through'which the gas is discharged.
The burner bodyA 5 has a bottomvwall 8 formed with an upstanding marginal side wall 9 which terminates at its upper edge with an inwardly projecting lip portion 10. The bottom wall 8 is also formed with an upwardly projecting annular boss 11 which, together with the side wall 9, forms an annular channel 12. The burner body 5 may be supported on a standard 13, and it is preferably formed with a hollow boss 14 that is secured upon said standard. At one side, the burner body 5 is kformed with a lug 17 in which is a port 17a in' which is secured an oil atomizing nozzle 18.v The oil supply pipe 19 is connected tothenozzle at said port and has a discharge tip 20 on its endthrough vwhich oil' in a line at right angles to the port 17a. At one side of the oil supplyl pipe 19-is a compressed air'pipe 2l which is" connected to the nozzle and has a tip 22 that terminates at a place approximately inline with the axis of the oil supply pipe tip 20, and:

Compressed airr is supplied tothecompressed air pipe 21, which compressed .air is discharged across the discharge orifice of the oil supply pipe tip, a partial vacuum in said pipe and drawing the oil to the tip, which oil is atomized and discharged tangentially into the annular gasifying chamber 16, drawing in air lthrough air supply pipes 13b and`13a.` The yatomized oil and air whirl through the annular gasifying chamber, and when ignited by the pilot light or otherwise, arepartially consumed in said chamber, and

the burning gases discharged through the slot or slit 7 into the combustion chamber of the furnace, where the burning gases come into contact with the outer air and complete combustion takes place.
An extremely hot, smokelessV fiame is produced, which flame is evenly distributed from the burner. Besides this,there is an economic use of oil, and the lower grades may be used to an advantage. Furthermore, other volatile liquid fuels may be used in this burner, as its use is not limited to oil.
In the modified form of burner illustrated in Fig. 3, the body 5a may be cast with the top 6a, and discharge apertures 7a, 7b, may be provided in the side wall, in place of the slot of the preferred form. In other respects the burner may be of the same construction as that shown in the preferred form.
A burner constructed in accordance with this invention consumes all of the volatiles of the fuel, smoke is eliminated, and an extremely hot flame is produced with a minimum use of` fuel.
`More or less variation of the exact details of construction is possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; I desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact form of the construction shown and described, but intend, in the following claims, to point out all of the invention disclosed herein.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. In an oil burner, a cup like burner body an imperforate top member therefor, said body and top member forming an annular gasifying chamber, having an annun.. lar gas discharge opening` at its outer cylindrical side wall, and an atomizer nozzle opening tangentially into said annular gasifying chamber.

In an oil buiner, a cup like burner body, anV imperforate top member covering said body and spaced therefrom to leave an annular gas discharge slot between the adjacent edge portions of the body and top member, said body and top member forming an annular gasifying chamber, and an atomizer'nozzle discharging into, and arranged tangentially of saidannular gasifyh ing l chamber.
3.-In a burner, a cup like burner body 1 formed with an upstanding rim and a centrally located upstanding boss, there being ering said body, said top plate having a centrally located downwardly `extending boss, said cup and top plate forming therebetween, an annular gasifying chamber, having a discharge slot between the rim and top plate, and an atomizer nozzle opening tangentially into said annular chamber.

In a burner, a cup like burner body formed with an annular channel, a top plate supported above and covering said body, andforming with said body an annular gasifying chamber, there being Aa discharge slot between the adjacent edge portions of said body and top plate, means for varying the width of said discharge slot, and an atomizer nozzle opening tangentially into said annular chamber.

In an oil burner, a cup like burner body, an` imperforate top member therefor, said body and top member Vforming .an an nular gasifying chamber, having an annu'- lar gas discharge opening at itsouter cylindrical wall, and there being an inlet port for fluid fuel, opening tangentially into said annular gasifying chamber, and thereY being a separate air intake, opening into said annular gasifying chamber, through its inner cylindricalwall. n l
6. In an oil burner, a cup likeburner body, an imperforate top member therefor, said` body and top member forming an annular gasifying chamber, having an annular gas discharge opening at its outer cylindrical wall, an oil atoniizer` nozzle discharging tangentially into said annular gasifying chamber, and there being a separate centrally located air intake, opening into saidj annular gasifying chamber, throughits inner cylindrical wall.
7. In an oil burner, y body formed with a centrally located upstanding boss, `an imperforate` top member a cup `like `burner` covering said cup like member and` spaced therefrom to leave a gas dischargeslot at` its outer side, said top member having a centrally located downwardly projecting boss, spaced awayfrom the upstanding boss ofthe body to leave a passage therebetween, an oil atomizing nozzledischarging tangentially into the annular chamber formed between the body and top member, and there being a separate air inlet, `opening through said upstanding boss` ofthe body.
