GAs-cocK-Loc InG DEVICE.
To all whom z'tmay'concern:
Be it known that I, EGBnRrI-I. CAsTLn, a citizen-0f the United States, and resident'of Quincy, in the county'of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented, new, and useful Improvements .in Gas-.Cock-l ocking Devices of-which the following is a description,refe'rence being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specilicafiiO-H: I 1
- This invention relates to improvements n gas cook locking devices, more particularly adapted for use on gas ranges wherein the oven isequipped with two burners. 1 .Gas ranges of the afore-mentioned character are provided with, two oven burners, one below the other, and the lower burner heats the oven for baking and the like, while the upper burner is used for broiling. 'In ranges ofthis kind, it has been found that explosionsare apt to occur if one burner is turned on while the other is lighted.
--It is,therefore,- the primary object of the present invention to provide an automatic locking device applied to the gas cocks of an oven which will prevent one of the gas cocks beingturned on if the other cock is ;already. on. 1
;A further object of the invention'is to provide a vertically movable bar connected to the gas cook handles and manually movable from oneposition to another to permit the operationof one of the gascocks and the consequent locking of the other of the gas cocks. r 7 A, further object ofthe invention is to provide a gascock locking device which is readily attachable -to the ordinary range having a two burner oven and requiring'no alterations or modifications of the same. A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the characterdescribed which is of very simple construction, is inexpensive to manufacture, is strong anddurable, and is well adapted for the purpose described. binations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof. f I
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicatethe same parts in allof the views:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective View of a. gasstove showing the improved locking device applied to the oven burner cocks, one'of the cocks being turned to the on position; I j q 1 Fig.2 is a detail view of the gas pipe and the oven burner cocks,.showing the locking device in adjusted position with the lower burner cock in on position;
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on line 38 of Fig. 1 and on a larger scale;
- Fig. 1 is a detail sectional view taken on line 4 -4 of Fig. 2 and on a larger scale;
-Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail'view taken on line 55 of Fig. 1; and I Fig, 6 is an enlarged detailviewvtaken on line 66-of Fig. 2; the gas cock being in closed position, however.
. -Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the numeral 8 indicates a gas range having. an oven 9 which is provided with an upper and a lower burner, both of which are supplied with gas by a vertical pipe 10, from which extend valves 11 and 12 for controlling the flow of gas to the upper and lower burners respectively. The cocks or valves llfand 12 are provided with valve stems having suitable handles13 and 14 for the operation thereof, the valves being opened when the handles are in a horizontal positiomandfclosed' when, the handles are in a verticalposition.
In gas ranges -ofthe type illustrated wherein the oven pis provided with two burners it is desirable to provide a means or plate twisted or bent substantially in the form of an S as shown and having enlarged or flanged end portions 16 and 17, the vertical planes of the end portions being spaced by approximately ninety degrees. The lower end portion of the bar 15 is provided with an oval shaped opening 18 while the upper end portion of the bar is provided with an L shaped opening 19, portions of said last-mentioned opening being in different planes with respect to each other.
The locking member 15 is applied to the gas range as shown with the handles 13 and 14 extending through the openings 18 and 19, the bar being vertically movable with respect to the valve stems and handles.
If it is desired to operate the handle controlling the valve of the upper burner, the locking member is adjusted in the position shown in Fig. 1 so that the lower L portion of the opening 19 engages the valve stem. In this position the upper valve handle is free to be moved, but asthe lower opening 18 engages the handle 14:, asshown in detail in Fig. 5, movement of said handle is prevented and the consequent opening of the valve of the lower =bu'rner. However, if it is desired to operate the valve for the lower burner and the handle 14 therefor, the valve handle 13 must be closed and the locking bar 15 is then lowered and given a slight turn. to the left. In this position the upper portion of the opening 19 engagesthe valve stem of the upper burner and the flanged portion of the bar is positioned adjacent the handle 13 to pre- 3 vent movement there'of. The lower end portion of the locking bar seats upon the stem portion of the lower handle, theposition of the bar being shown in Figs. 2, 4, and 6, and the lower handle 14 is free to be moved, but
. the upper handle 13 is prevented from movement. In this manner the locking bar forms an efi'ective check against movement of one of the valve handles when the other is turned to the on position.
From 'the foregoing description it will be seen that the improved gas cock or valve locking device is of very simple and novel construction, and is well adapted for the purpose set forth.
VV'hat I claim as'my invention is:
1. The combination with a gas range having two burners, of a valve, valve handle, and valve handle stem for each burner, and a bar member loosely carried and supported only by one of said valve handles and one dle locked when the bar is in reverse position.
2. The combination with a gas range having two burners, ot a valve, valve handle, and valve handle stem for each burner, and a curved bar member loosely carried only by one of said valve handles and one of said valve handle stems and manually movable longitudinally with respect thereto to. either of two operative and valve handle engaging positions, one of said valve handles being locked against movement by said bar when it is in one operative position, and the other handle locked when the bar is in reverse position.
3. The combination with a gas range having two burners, of avalve for each burner, valve handles therefor, and a unitary valve locking member engaging only said valve handles and being longitudinally and turnably 'movableto two positions of adjustment, one of the valve handles being prevented from movement by contact with the valve locking 'member when the same is in one position of adjustment, and the other handle locked when the lo'cki'ng'member is in reverse position.
4:. The combination with a gas range having two burners, of a valve for each burner, valve handlestherefor, and a valve locking member havingan opening in one of its end portions through which one valve handle extends when locked, said valve locking member having two positions of adjustment and one of the valve handles being prevented from movement by contact with the valve lockingmember when the same is in one position of adjustment, and the other handle locked when the locking member is in reverse position.
5. A locking device for oven burner gas cocks, consisting of an S-sha'ped bar having enlarged end portions, the upper end portion being provided with an 'L-shaped opening and the lower end portion being provided with an oval opening, both of said openings being arranged for the reception of gas cocks.
6. The combination with a gas range having av two burner oven, of a valve for each burner, valve handles therefor, and an S- shaped and twisted bar having enlarged end portions in different planes, the upper end portion being provided with an L-shaped opening and the lower end portion being rovided with a curved opening, the valve andle of the upper burnervalve being extended through said L-shaped opening and the valve handle of the lower burner valve being extended through said lower opening, said bar having two positions of adjustment and one of the valve handles being prevented from movement by contact with one of the enlarged end portions of the bar when'the same :is in one position of adji'istmen't, and the other handle locked when the bar 'is'in "reing two burners, of a valve for each burner, valve operatlng means therefor, and a longitudinally and turnably movable valve locking member, there being a slot and projection engagement between the locking member and the valve operating means, said valve locking member having two positions of adjustment and one set of the valve operating means being prevented from movement by contact with the valve locking member when the same is in one position of adjustment, and the other set of valve operating means locked when the valve locking member is in reverse position.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
