IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,939, dated November 17, 1874; application filed September 30, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISAAC E. NEwToN, of Waterbury, county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Suspenders, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to fastenings for suspenders where they cross each other in the back; and the nature of my invention consists in aneyelet or rivet passing through and fastening the suspenders together, and provided with a head or button on each side, which is covered with cloth or other flexible material, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view of parts of a pair of suspenders embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the fasten- 1n lhe fastenings ordinarily used in suspenders to connect them where they cross each other at the back have heretofore generally been made of brass or other metal, which soils the garments when they become wet with perspiration. To obviate this difliculty is the object of my invention.

AA represent two suspenders, each of which has an ordinary eyelet, I), fastened in it at the point where the two suspenders are to cross each other at the back. Through the two eyelets b b is passed along eyelet or hollow rivet, a, which, at one end, is provided with a head or button, B. This button consists of an inner metal disk, 01, through the center of which the eyelet a is passed, and a flange on the end of the eyelet prevents the same from coming out. An outer metal disk, f, covered on the outside with cloth or other textile fab ric e, is then spun around the edges of the inner disk d, thus completing the button. A paper or other disk, 1', may or may not be used in the interior of the button B thus formed. Upon the other end of the eyelet or hollow rivet a is then fastened a head or button, C, in the following manner: The button C is also formed of an inner centrally-perforated disk,

d, an outer disk, f, and a textile covering, 0; but in addition thereto it has a loose interior metal disk, m, in the center of which is struck up a projection, 00, of conical or other similar shape. This projection is directly opposite and in the central perforation of the inner disk d. The eyelet a having been passed through the eyelets b b, the end thereof is placed through the central opening in the disk d, and over the conical projection 00. A blow on either of the buttons will spread the end of the eyelet a over the conical projection a; and form a flange, which fastens the button C permanently to the rivet or eyelet a.

The heads or buttons B C may be swiveled on the eyelet or rivet a, or be fastened thereto so as to be stationary, as may be desired.

It will readily be seen that the metal of said heads or buttons and eyelets is perfectly covered by the textile fabric e of the buttons, so that if the metal should corrode from the effects of the perspiration the garments will not be soiled or injured in any way.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The method of fastening or connecting suspenders where they cross each other at the back by means of an eyelet or rivet, provided at each end with a head or button covered with cloth or other textile material, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. The button C, formed of the disks (1 and f, with exterior textile covering 0, and provided with the interior metal disk m, having a'central projection, 00, in combination with the eyelet or hollow shank a, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. The combination, with the suspenders A A, of the eyelets b b, the eyelet a passing through them, and the heads or buttons B C fastened to the ends of the eyelet a, and provided with textile covering 6, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
