To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. PdWERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wooster, in thecounty of lVayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful lVell-Drilling Derrick, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to. improvements in well-drilling derricks, and particularly to improvements in the swing-lever and knuckle-post for operating the sand reel against the band wheel and back-brake in such derricks. Its principal objects are, first, to provide a combined swing-lever and knuckle-joint of greater strength and durability than those heretofore used, I and secondly, to provide means for eflicient and speedy adjustmentof the combined swinglever and knuckle-joint and the sand-reel of the ordinary deep well drilling derricks, and to avoid the s litting, loosening, rapid. wear and decay incldent to the wooden construc-.
tion and non-adjustable methods heretofore employed, and, lastly, to provide means for mounting and adjusting the sand reel and swing-lever both laterally and vertically, by adjustable bearings for both, whereby the swing-lever mechanism is strengthened, and a more durable and efiicient hinge is provided for tilting it back and forth to bring the friction wheel of the sand-reel into contact with either hand wheel 01' back-brake or to an intermediate position, all as hereinafter particularly set forth, and as stated in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate like parts.
Referring thereto, Fig. 1 is a side view of an adjustable combined swing-lever and knuckle-joint and bearings, parts embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view of the tail-post and means for adjusting the same to accommodate the sand-reel shaft opposite the swing-lever.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of may improved bearin for supporting and a justing the swingever and sand-reel, in longitudinal section and enlarged for better illustration. G indicates my improved adjustable bearing for the shaft H of the sand-reel in connection with which the friction wheel B is mounted, and the bearing on which the knuckle-joint H hinges in its support-of the swing-lever D. 7 As no claim is made herein specifically to the construction of the adjustable bearings employed, further description thereof is unnecessary.
My improved swing-lever D is preferably made of steel, shaped in cross section in H formation, as shown in Fig. 6, the longitudinal flanges serving not only to strengthen and lighten the lever, but also to afford means for securing the adjustable bearings thereon, and for attaching the knuckle-joint member, Fig. 5, thereto. Such attachment is accomplished by providing a knuckle-joint comprising a pair of pivotal members H- H (Fig. 5), set opposite each other with a flanged member 7' projecting from each, as shown in Fig. 1.
The tail-post K (Fig. 2) is vertically secured upon the tail-sill J by means of angular plates L L, which are bolted thereto and to the tail-post and stayed at its upper end by the guy-rods m a connected thereto, and to the sub-sills by lag-screws p p, said post being also made of metal and with longitudinal flanges similar to the swing-lever, and set opposite thereto so as to support the outer end of the sand-reel shaft.
An adjustable bearing G, in all respects similar to that on the swing-lever, is mounted and secured upon the tail-post at a point opposite the bearing on the swing-lever in such manner as to permit the lateral movement of the opposite end of the sand-reel shaft, and the vertical adjustment required for said shaft to rotate freely, horizontally.
The cap member 3 of the adjustable bearing G for the knuckle-joint is made of two parts set apart sufficient to admit the lower end of the swing-lever and the projecting flanged members j j to actuate between said parts. It is apparent that by means of the said adjustable bearings G at both ends of its shaft the sand-reel may be adjusted both laterally and vertically, occasion for which often occurs, on account of the strenuous use to which the parts are subjected in deep well drilling, and also that the knuckle-postheretoitore employed is entirely replaced by the swing-lever and adjustable bearing therefor herein described, thereby insuring greater strength and safety and that necessary adjustments may readily be made by the driller or tool-dresser, without necessitating a shut-down, or call for the rig-builder, as heretofore required, for such adjustments and repairs.
Having thus fully described my inven tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a well drilling derrick, the combination with a swing-lever, a bearing for the lower end of said lever mounted on the sill or platform of the derrick, a sand reel shaft, a bearing for one end of said shaft mounted on the arm of said lever, said bearing capable of longitudinal adjustment thereon, and means for actuating the free end of said lever arm back and forth on said sill or platform bearing, substantially as set forth.
2. In a Well drilling derrick, the combi nation with a swing-lever, a bearing for the lower end of said lever mounted on the sill or platform of the derrick, said bearing capable of longitudinal adjustment thereon, a sand reel shaft, a bearing for one end of said shaft mounted on the arm of said lever, said bearing capable of longitudinal adjustment thereon, and means for actuating the free end of said lever arm back and forth, substantially as set forth.
3. In a well drilling derrick, the combination with a swing-lever, a sand reel shaft, a bearing for said shaft at its movable end, mounted on said lever arm, said bearing capable of longitudinal adjustment on said lever arm, a tail post, a bearing for the stationary end of said sand reel shaft mounted on said tail post, said bearing capable of vertical adjustment thereon, a bearing for the lower end of said lever arm mounted on the sill or platform of the derrick, said bearing capable of longitudinal adjustment thereon, and means for actuating the free end of said lever arm back and forth, substantially as set forth, and for the purpose specified. 7
