UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISRAEL HOGELAND, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN METHODS OF MAKING BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent Nol56,926, dated November 17, 1874; application filed May 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown thatI, ISRAEL HOGELAND, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Method of Making Barrels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked put up into barrel form, and held in place by means of contracting hoops.
My invention relates to an improved method of making barrels, kegs, or other packages from slabs or veneers of boiled or steamed lumber while yet in a moist state, and afterward allowing the same to become properly seasoned Without the usual delay of waiting for the drying of material in ricks 0r kilns.
The manner of proceeding is as follows: Veneers or slab sheets, cut from logs of boiled or steamed wood by means of a veneercutting machine, are presented to a gang of circular saws of various sizes secured upon the same mandrel. By the peculiar arrangement of the teeth of these saws, which is set forth in Patent No. 149,932, the lower sides of the slits or kerfs made by them will be wider than the upper side when the veneer or slab is presented to the saws in a proper manner,'and this gives the required bevel to the sides of each kerf, so that when these parts are all bound together by the hoops they will have a full bearing throughout the length of the slits, thus allowing the seams of the barrel to be made close and tight. A sufficient number of these veneers or slab sheets having been prepared, they are each then bent into the form of a barrel, and bound with two or more contracting trusshoops. These hoops have the efi ect of drawin g the slabs or staves together closely as they shrink in drying, so that when the wood becomes Well seasoned the shape of the barrel is retained, and with sufficiently tight seams for ordinary uses. The contracting hoops can then be removed, and the barrel finished with the ordinary round or flat hoops.
By the use of these slabs or veneers of boiled or steamed lumber in constructing barrels a great saving is effected in time and expense.
-It is well known that the process of steaming,
by opening the pores of the material steamed, facilitates the passage of moisture from its interior, and renders it capable of drying more quickly. Lumber so treated is easily worked, and is not apt to crack and check when being made into staves for barrels.
Hayingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A barrel or other wooden vessel made, in the manner herein described, from slabs of boiled or steamed lumber cut to the proper length, and having longitudinal kerfs formed in each end, then bent into the required shape, and retained therein by means of elastic hoops until properly seasoned.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of April, 1874.
ISRAEL HOGELAND. Witnesses:
