Be it known that I, JOHN D. RAUcH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Lima, in the county of Allen and. State of Ohio, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in Power Shovels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in power shovels. The principal object of .my invention is to provide a "simple, durable and efficient mechanism for operating the hoisting drums, dipper operating devices, turn-table and propelling devices.

Referring now to details shown in the drawings, my invention is illustrated as applied to a power shovel having the motor and main operating mechanism carried on a frame 1, which frame is pivotally mounted to swing on a vertical axisu on a base 2. The base 2 is provided wit propelling mechanism of any suitable form, sisting of an endless tread mechanism 3. The shovel 4 is of an ordinary dipper type having a handle 5 provided with a rack 6,'
engaging a pinion 7 carried on. a boom 8, the latter being arranged at the front end of the main frame but so as tobe raised or lowered by suitable draft means, such as a and. meshed with agear 35 forming one herein, conis also mounted in.
The driving motor 20 is of. the usual multi-cylinder hydrocarbon typemoun'ted on a transverse axis at the rear end of the main frame 1. The main drive shaft 21 of this motor'is connected through a pinion 19 and reach gear 22 to a gear 23 on a shaft 24 also arranged on a transverse 'axis'but in front of the motor.- The main cable drum is further connected disposed supporting frame members 29 and i 30, extending forwardly'from the motor 20. The driving connection between the shaft 24 and the drum. 13 is afforded through apinion 31 on shaft 24, a gear '32 keyed on the shaft 28 concentric with the-drum' 13 art. of a friction clutch device 36 forwardly of the drum 13. Details of this'frictionclutch device are clearly shown in Fig. 4 from which it will be seen that a driven member '37 is keyed on shaft 38, adjacent the loosely mounted driving gear 35. A friction band consisting of a circular part 39 surrounds a drum 37 on said'driven member, one end;
of said band being connected with a lever 40 on one of the rocking shafts 40 extending through the driving gear 35 and the other end being connected direct to said rocking shaft. The intermediate portion of the fIiC-r tion band 39 .is supporte by a loop 399on the opposite shaft 40. The rocking'sh afts 40, 40 are actuated to tightenor loosen'the friction band by a sliding clutch "collar41 mounted on the shaft 38 and connected by links 42, 42 and levers 43, 43,- asshown in Figure 4. and is meshed with a gear 46 mounted, rigid with the drum 13 fordriving the latter.

Mechanism 1s also provided-1n connection with the driving mechanism just described for operating the swinging movement of the j main frame 1 with respect to the base '2 and also for operating and propelling the device. Thislatter mechanism-includes both reversing device and a change spped trans 1111881011, inasmuch as it is deslra from the extended end of the shaft-28 upon which said drum is' loosely mounted. This shaft, as has been above described, is osi tively driven through gears 22, 23,- sha 24 and ears 31 and 32, the latter gear being keys on the shaft 28. The reversing mech anism comprises a pair of oppositel dis posed friction clutches 50 and51, whic may a be similar in construction to that described in connection with the clutch 36, each comprising adriving member 52 and a driven member 53 having a miter gear 54, loosely mounted on the shaft 28. The two miter gears are both meshed with a beveled pinion 54:carried on a shaft 55 having bearing in the change speed transmission housing 56 mounted forwardly of the reversing mechanism just described. The clutches 50 and 51 are controlled through a pair of shifter members 60 and 61 interlocked in theusual manner so' as to throw the coacting clutch elements of one of the clutch members into engagement when the other clutch is disengaged, and vice versa, thus causing one or the other of the miter gears 54 to afford,

The chan espeed transmissiondevice is located in t e casing 56 and rovides two drivin connections at the orward end thereof, as will now be described. A slid-y in gear 57 is feathered onshaft 55, to be shifted by yoke 57 and a connected rack 57 P and pimon 57? suitably mounted on the top of the casing56. The sliding ear 57 may be meshed with gear 58 keye shaft 58 extending through the forward end of casing 56 and having a bevelled gear 65 thereon. The latter gear is connected with a. beveled gear 66 on a vertically disposed shaft 67 having a pinion 68 at the lower end of said shaft below the frame 1 and enga ed with a toothed periphery 69 carried on the base 2 so as to rotate the frame 1 with respect to the base 2 under power of to provide a" drivin the motor. A series of rollers 70, 70v of the usual form are carried on the mam frame 1 and engage an annular track 71 on the base 2, so as to reduce the'friction as the frame is rotated. v
The second driving" connection from the gear 57 in transmission housing 56,is provlded by meshing said gear with a gear 59 keyed on shaft 60. The latter shaft extends through the forward end of casing 56 and is provided with a beveled"driving pinion 75 meshed with a pinion 76Ion a transverse shaft 77. A "beveled inion 78 is keyed on the inner end of the shaft 77. and is meshed with the beveled pinion 79 on a vertical shaft 80 arranged concentrically of the vertically turning axisof the frame 1 upon the shaft 58" and meshed with a smaller gear 62-ke ed on shaft 60 adjacent gear 59. This afior s a driving connection tothe propell ng devices at an increased speed and in a direction, reversed from the drive through gear 59. Any suitable well known form of propelling device ma be provided on the base, suchas the en less tread mechanism 3, as shown. The construction of the lat ter need not be described in detail as it forms no part of the present invention.
I also provide means for controlling the movement of the dipper handle, through the rack 6 and the pinion 7 '.In the form shown this meanscomprises a'drum 90 arranged on a shaft 91 transversely of the front end of the main frame 1. A clutch 93 of the friction type hereinbefore described, is' adapted engagement between the drum 90 and t e gear 94: concentric therewith, this gear being meshed as shown, to the driving gear 35 associated with the clutch mechanism 36 intermediate the drum 90 and the main drum 13. The drum 90 is also provided with reverse driving connections, comprising a gear 95 keyed on shaft 91 to rotate with the driving gear 94, and meshed witha plurality of planeta gears 98, 98 carried on arotatable mem er 97. The outer peripheries of the planetary ears engage an Internal gear 98 on the rum restrains rotation of the forwardly and downwardly over the idler pulleys 100 mounted on the boom 8 adjacent its point of pivotal connection with the frame 1 and from thence the ends of the cable extend upwardly and are wound about a drum 101 carried on the boom adjacent the pinion 7. The'drum 101 is provided with a gear 102 thereon (see Fig. 5.) engaging a gear 103 which rotates the rack 7.
From the above description it will be seen that by rotating thedrum 90 in either directlon, the pinion 7 may be rotated so as to force-the rack 6 and dipper handle 5 inwardly or outwardly as required. Furthermore, the brake band 96 may be operated so asto maintain the dipper handlein any desired position.-
Means are also provided for adjusting the tension of the cable 99 upon drums 90 and 101. In the form shown, both of said drums are provided with I helical grooves 110 .in which the cable 99 is wound in the usual manner.
Referring now to the drum 101, which is best shown in cross section-in Fig. 5, it will be seen that I provide means whereby the drum body is split on a transverse plane, so as to provide two portions 111 and 112 at opposite ends thereof. These portions are loosely mounted on sleeves 111* and 112 respectively, both being keyed on the shaft 98. Thegear 102 is also keyed to rotate as a unit with the shaft 98 and sleeves 111* and 112. The sleeves 111 and 112Seach have worm gears 113 attheir outer ends, engaging the toothed periphery 113 of the adjacent drum portion. This arrangement permits either drum portion to be turned separately in either direction with respect tothe shaft 98 byapplying a crank of the usual kind on the squared end 113 of either of the worms 113. The ends of cable 99 being connected respectively to the two portions 111 and 112, the tension on the rope may thus be ad- 4 justed as desired.
The arrangement of gearing hereinbefore described, is especially advantageous in connection with a single line shovel of the type herein disclosed, that is to say, the type of shovel wherein the dipper is connected directly to the cable drum 15 instead of having its cable doubled back upon itself one or more times over pulleys so as to produce a double or quadruple-connection between the boom and the dipper. Such single-line shovels have certain structural and operating advantages over other types of power shovels, but on account of the direct connection to the dipper as aforesaid, the main'opcrating drum 13 is under considerably more direct stress during operation than is the case of the more usual arrangement of cables connected to the dipper through double or quadruple pulley connections. Consequently, there is considerably more stress on one side of the centrally served that the friction clutch 36 and fric'-' tion brake band 39 are mounted on a separate rotating member in front of the main drum 13- and are operatively connected thereto through a gear reduction, thus making it possible to provide a friction clutch and a friction brake of the usual size, and
yet of sufficient strength to drive and con-.
trol said drum satisfactorily.
It will further be observed that owing to" I the single-line cable connection as above described,it is not necessary to provide such a large drum as in the usual case of pulley connected devices, -conse uently with the construction shown, ,the rum 13 is more compact than usual and it is practical to provide a particularly compact arrangement wherein the reversing mechanism and change speed mechanism are-located at onev side of the drums.
Among other advantages of a device con- 36 and drum 90 in longitudinal alignment with each other in front of the motor and between the main supports 29 and 30 arranged centrally of the frame-1. The driving gears 30, 32 and 35 thus extend in a general line forwardly from the motor to the friction clutch and frictional brake device 36, and the direction of driving connections to the drum 13 is then reversed through the gears 45 and 46 to the drum,
while the driving connections to the drum 7 90 extend forwardly from gear 35 to gear 94, thus providing an especially compact and simple arrangement of driving connections. The reversing mechanism and change speed transmissionhousing' are both located disposed line of drums and gearing, thus leaving the other side of the platform on the 'main frame clear for the operator, so that he may pass readily from his controlling station at the front end of the platform along the side of the drums and gearing, and to the motor at the rear end for read access to these parts for observation, read pair. I
I claim as myinvention': a
1. In a device of the class described, a frame having a boom and a dipper on the forward end thereof} a motor at'the rear end of said frame, flexible cable controlling means for said dipper including a drum mounted on a transverse axis 1n front of said motor and operatively connected to the ustment or relatter through friction clutch means rotatable on an axis in front of said drum, gear reduction mechanism interposed between said clutch and said drum, and brake means associated with said friction clutch means.
2. In a device .of the class described, a frame having a boom and a dipper at the forward end thereof, a motorat the rear end of said frame, flexible cable controlling means comprising a single line cable extendng between said dipper and a drum mounted frame having a boom and a dipper at the forward end thereof, a motor at the rear: end of said frame, flexible cable controlling means comprising a single line cable extending between said dipper and a drum mounted forwardly of said motor on a transverse axis,
and power connections between said motor and said drum including brake means rotatable on an axis forwardly of said drum and .a reduction gear connection between said last named means and saiddrum.
4. In a device of the class described, a frame having a boom and a dipper at the forward end thereof, a motor at the rear end of said frame, flexible cable controlling -means comprising -a single line cable extending between said dipper and a drum mounted forwardly of said motor on a transverse axis, and power connections between said motor and said drum including friction clutch means and brake means rotatable on an axis forwardly of said drum, and a reduction gear connection between said last named means and said drum.
5.- In a device of the class described, a frame having a boom mounted at the forward end thereof, a dipper provided with a handle having a rack and pinion connection with said boom, a hydrocarbon motor at the rear end of said frame, flexible cable means connected to said dipper and extending over a sheave. carried by said boom, a drum for said cable means mounted forwardly of said motor, a'second drum at the front of saidiframe provided with flexible draft connection with saidrack and pinion means to drivesaid means in opposite directions, and reversible power connection for said last named means.
6. In a device of the class described a frame having a boom mounted at the forward end thereof, a dipper provided with a handle having a rack and-pinion engagement on said boom, a motor at the rear end of said frame, a single line flexible cable connected between said dipper and extending over a sheave carried by said boom, 21' drum for said cable means mounted forwardly of said motor, a second drum at the front end of said frame and provided with flexible draft means having connection with said rack and pinion means onthe boom, friction clutch means rotatable on a transverse axis between said drums andaflording wvard end thereof, a dipper provided with a handle having a rack and pinion engagement said boom, a motor at the rear end of said frame, flexible cable means connected to said dipper and extending over a sheave carried by said boom, a drum for said cable means mounted forwardly of said motor, a second drum at the front end of said frame and provided with flexible draft having connection with said rack and pinion means on the boom, friction clutch means rotatable on a transverse axis between said drums and affording selective driving connection with the first named drum, an independent friction clutch device concentric with the second drum for controlling rotation of the latter, and planetary reversing mechanism effective for driving said last named drum. 8. In a device of the'class described, a base, a frame pivotally mounted on said base to swing in a horizontal plane, a boomand dipper mounted at the forward end of said frame, motor at therear end of said frame, flexible cable means for said dipper comprising a single line cable connected with a drum mounted forwardly of said motor on a transverse axis, friction clutch means and gear reduction driving mecha? nism for said drum rotatable on an axis forwardly of the latter,power-connections from through said drum and upon which the latter is loosely mounted, reversing mechanism said motor to said friction clutch means inv eluding a gear carried on a shaft extending mechanism forrotating the frame with respect to the base in opposite directions.
9. In a device of the class described,a base, a frame pivotally mounted on said base to swing in a horizontal plane, a boom anddipper mounted at the forward end of said frame, a motor at the rear end of said s frame, a single strand flexible cable extending between said dipper and a drum mounted forwardly of said motor on a transverse axis, friction clutch means mounted for wardly of said drum, power connections from said motor to said friction clutch means including a gear carried on a shaft mechanism mounted on said shaft at one side of said drum, change speed mechanism connected with said reversing mechanism on the same side of the frame, andmeans driven from said change speed mechanism for rotating theframe on the base whereby the frame may be swung in opposite directions.
10. In a device of the class described, a
frame having a boom, adipper provided with a handle having rack and pinion connection on said boom, a motor at the rear end of said frame arranged on a transverse axis, flexible cable means for said dipper mounted on a. transverse axis and centrally of said frame in front of said motor, means operatively connectin said motor and said drum including geare reduction mechanism and a friction clutch, and a second drum mounted forwardly of said first named drum having an independent friction clutch 0peratively connected with said gear reduction mechanism, flexible cable means connected with said second drum and extending to the boom for controlling the rack and pinion connection of the dipper handle and the boom, and: means for propelling said base frame including a reversing mechanism and change speed transmission mounted on the frame at one side of the rope drums.
11. In a device of the class described, a base having traction means therefor, a frame pivotally mounted on said base to swing in a horizontal plane, a boom and dipper mounted at the forward end of said frame, a motor at the rear end of said frame, a single strand flexible cable extendin between said dipper and a drum mounted forwardly of said motor on a transverse axis, friction clutch means mounted forwardly of said drum, power connections from said motor to said friction clutch means including a gear carried on a shaft extending through said drum and upon which the latter is loosely mounted, reversing mechanism mounted on said shaft at one side of said 'drum', change speed mechanism connected with said reversing mechanism, and means driven from said change speed mechanism both for rotating the frame-on the base and for driving said traction means in opposite directions and at.var ing speeds.
