J. RUZE STAMP OR LABEL MOISTENER Filed June 4, 1925 INVENTOR.
lb/11v 12025.
A TTORNEY.
Patented Jan. 5, 1926 UNITED STATES JOHN RUZE, OF NEW YORK. N. Y.
STAMP R LABEL MOISTENER.
Application filed June 4, 1925. Serial No. 34,981.
10 all 1072 cm it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN RUZE, a citizen of the United States,.residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, hare invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp or Label Moisteners, of'which the following is a specification.
-This invention relates to stamp or label aliixing devices and has for its primary object to produce a novel and efiicient construction whereby a roll of stamps or labels may be passed'over' a moistened surface so that the gummed side of the stamp or label may be brought in contact therewith to facilitate theaflixing of the stamp or label to an envelope, package or other object.
One of the objects of my invention therefore, is to produce a stamp or label affixing device in which a roll of stamps or labels may be positioned, permitting the said roll to be unwound so that thegummed surface may be moistened preliminary to detaching the said stamps or labels from the roll whereby they may be attached on an object.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention, they mayembody the same in the various modifications in structure and relation contemplated, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure and in such drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, of which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal, sectional view therethrongh.
Figure 3 is a sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detailed, sectional view of the locking means for the housing closure.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout all the views, 5 designates the side wall and 6 the cylindrical housing or container attached to said wall in any suitable manner. A roll 7 of stamps or labels is adapted to be positioned within the said cylindrical housing on a hollow, transverse post or shaft 8, the outer end 9 of said post or shaft being rolled or clinched to the side 5, as clearly shown by Figure 3 of the drawings. The roll of stamps or labels are so mounted on the post or shaft so that it is free to rotate thereon.
whereby the stamps or labels may be unwound through the slit or opening 10 in the front of the housing, above referred to.
Forwardly of the housing, I provide a receptacle consisting of a bottom 11, preferably formed integral with the rear wall 12, the front wall 13 of said receptacle being struck out of the metal or material of said bottom, forwardly of the front edge 14;. \Vithin the receptacle, there is positioned a removable piece of moisture absorbing material 15, which may be a packing of cotton or a sponge, whereby as the gummed stamps or labels are withdrawn, the gummed surface thereof may come in contact with the moisture absorbing material for the obvious purpose. The side 16 of the moisture receiving receptacle extends forwardly to the front edge 14, being parallel with the opposite side 5, heretofore referred to. Between. the top edge of the wall 13 and the front edge 1% of the bottom, I provide a V-shaped ridge 1? whereby the stamps and labels, after being moistened, may slide forwardly to be applied to the envelope or package as the case may be. The ridge 17 permits the stamps to ride freely forwardly so that two or more connected stamps may be drawn and affixed preliminary to severing the same fromthe roll along the usual edge perforations.
The housing 6 is also provided with suitable guides 18 on the top thereof for a sliding spring 19, the upturned edge or end 19 of which permits the said spring to be moved back of the front opening 10 whereby the end of the roll of stamps or labels may be brought into engagement with the moistened surface of the pad 15. The forwardly curved end 20 of the spring lies in close proximity to the pad so that the stamps or labels passing therebetween are brought into engagement with the top of the moisture absorbing element for the above mentioned purpose.
In order to more positively permit of the free unrolling of the endless strip and to prevent the said roll from unwinding too quickly, I provide an auxiliary spring 21 attached at one end 22 to the rear wall 12, which spring extends through a slot or opening 23 in the housing to engage the face or surface of the stamps or labels. The spring produces sufficient tension on the roll so that the stamps or labels will not be withdrawn too freely or too quickly to the front of the housing and in engagement with the moislit ture absorbing member 15,. A closure or cover 24:, having suitable grooves 25, cooperating with depressions formed in the outer surface of the housing is provided, which closure may be locked to the said housing and easily removed when it is desired to replace a new roli.
lVhile I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, i realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Haring'thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by United States Letters Patent is l. A stamp or label aflixing device comprising a housing having an opening in the front thereof, a closure for said housing, i cans for supporting a roll within the housing, a container forwardly of said housing adapted to receive a moisture absorbing element therein and a resilient member carried by said housing and extending over the said opening for urging the gummed surface in engagement with said moisture absorbing element.
A stamp or label affixing device comprising a housing having a front opening therein, a removable closure for said hous ing, means for freely supporting a roll within the housing, a container open at its top and located forwardly of the housing, a moisture absorbing member within the container, a spring carried by the housing and extending over the opening in proximity to the moisture absorbing member whereby the gummed surface of the stamp or label is moistened.
3. A stamp or label afiixing device comprising a housing having a. front opening therein, a removable closure for the side of said housing, means for freely supporting a roll within the housing, a container open at its top adapted to receive a moisture absorbing element therein below the opening, a spring and guides therefor on the top of the housing, said spring extending over the said opening and in proximity to the top of the container, whereby the gunnned surface of a. stamp or label is urged in contact with the moisture absorbing element, and a ridge between the front edge and top of the said container.
l. A stamp or label affixing device comprising a housinghaving a front opening therein, a closure for the housing, means for freely supporting a roll within the housing whereby the end of the roll may be drawn through the opening, a container open at its top forwardly of the said opening, a moisture absorbing element within the container, a rear wall formed with the container, a spring attached to the rear wall and passing through the housing to engage the roll, guides and a spring carried by the top of the housing, said last mentioned spring passing over the said opening in proximity to the moisture absorbing element whereby the gummed surface of the stamp or label is urged into contact with the said absorbing element.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN RUZE.
