Be it known that l, FRIEDRICH HOFMANN, a citizen ot the Republic of Germany, residing at Schmoelln, Saxony-Altenburg, Republic of Germany, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements in an Apparatus for Leveling Soles ot' Shoes (for which l have fi ed application in Germany on March 12, 1923), ot' which the following is a specitication.

This invention relates to an apparatus for leveling the soles of shoes or the like, and it is the principal object of the invention to provide an apparatus of this type allowing a simultaneous tensioning ot the leveling roller against the work-piece and a proper adjustment of the latter.

Another object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus of this character with means tor locking the parts in their adjusted ositions.

i5 further object of the invention is the provision ot' a padded, adjustable abutment for the shoes.

rlhese and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds and will then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure l is a side elevation of an apparatus for leveling soles of shoes, constructed according to the present invention.

A trame or table a of any well known suitable construction, for instance as shown in the drawing, has attached thereto a `bracket a having an upper inclined bar adapted to pass through the lower end of an arm Z) wiich carries at its upper end a support b presenting an abutment for the shoe and on which a piece of felt c or the like is mounted against which the shoe Z is adapted to be pressed.

At the lower part of the table a a foot operated lever e is pivotally mounted intermediate its ends in a bracket e attached to the table. To the rear end of the foot lever e arod f is movably secured, and a spring g is wound about this rod, the lower end of which spring engages a collar g on said rod, while the upper end of the spring engages the lower end of a sleeve 7L in which the upper end of the rod f is movably guided. A stop rod e has a lower shoulder which is adapted to be engaged by the foot lever e when t-he latter is depressed in order to lock the same.

In operation, the toot lever e is depressed and locked by its engagement with the shoulder of the stop rod e whereby the arm 7a and leveling roller z' will be held under the tension of the spring g against the shoe or work-piece (Z, while the last n carrying the shoe is iirmly held against the felt piece c on support b. It will be clear that in this manner the working tool is pressed against the work-piece, and the latter is held in its proper position by one operation, while the movements of arms m are adapted to be adjusted in certain limits according to the size of the shoe by means of screw c.

It will be clear that chances may be made in the general construction and in the arrangement and construction of the minor details of the device within the scope defined by the appended claims vithout departing from the` spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In an apparatus 'for leveling the soles ot shoes having a hand-operated leveling roller, a foot lever for yieldingly pressing or the like, carrysaid leveling roller against the solo, a last, a two-armed lever supporting said last, a toe abutment for the shoe held on said last, and a means for simultaneously pressing said lastand the shoe thereon against said toe abutment, and said leveling roller against the sole upon the operation of said foot lever.

2. In an apparat-us for leveling soles of shoes having a hand operated leveling roller, a foot lever forv yieldinglv pressing said leveling roller against the sole to be leveled,

an articulated last support, a Cushioned toe abutment for the shoe on the last on said last support, and a Connection between said last support and said foot lever for allowinfr a simultaneous pressing or" said leveling roller against the sole of the shoe and of the shoe on the last against the toe abutment upon the operation of said foot lever.
