, Be it known that I, JOHN A/Rosn, a citizen ofthe United States, residing in the city of Reno, in the county of Washoe and State of Nevada, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in a lVater Carrier,
- of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to water carriers for attachment to motor vehicles for touring purposes, wherein a pair of inclined frames pivotally mounted to the motor vehicle at their upper ends operate in conjunction with flexible water containers detachably mount-' ed upon said frames.
The primary object of the present invention is to PIOVldG a new and'improved water carrier for attachment to motor vehicles for touring purposes.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved water carrier of the type set forth, arranged to easily and quickly dispense water for motor, cul1 nary or other purposes.
A further object is to provide a new and improved water carrier of the type set forth that shall be adapted to carry a considerable amount of auxiliary water supply from which a portion may be dispensed without the entire supply.
I accomplish these and other objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said .specification and draw ings, and in which- Fig. 1 is a broken side elevation of the I front portion of a motor vehicle disclosing the manner in which my invention is attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is a broken front elevation of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed view of the hose holding means.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate a-motor vehicle having the usual radiator 2, cap 3, and running boards 4. My invention comprises a yoke 6 arranged with a vertically dis osed central opening arranged to embrace t e filling extension or opening of the radiator 2 and to be held securely in such position by means of the radiator cap 3 when screwed or otherwise fastened in closed position. That is, the central opening fits over the filling extension of the radiator 2 and may be readily and easily lifted from said extension when the cap 3 is not in position, but'when said cap 3 is screwed into-place it will fit over the yoke 6 and securely hold the same in position.
The yoke 6 is provided with lateral extensions 7 extending beyond each side of the radiator. Pivotally mounted upon each extension is one end of a suitable frame 8 which inclines downwardly and rearwardly fromthe extensions 7 'so that said pivotal ends are elevated with respect to the rear ends of said frames 8, and said frames 8 lie over the curved front fenders or mud-guards 9 of the motor vehicle 1, leaving an unobstructed view for the operator of the vehicle and occupying space which,"on ac count of the curved shape of the fenders 9, would otherwise be unavailable for the transportation of baggage or other objects.
The rear or lower ends of the frames 8 are each provided with asuitable thumb screw 11 arranged to engage a slot 12, arranged concentric with the pivotal points on the extensions 7, within suitable brackets or clamps 14 detachably mounted upon the running boards 4 of the motor vehicle 1, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
Detachably mounted "upon each frame, preferably by means of straps 16 or any other suitable fastening device, I have rovided a preferably flexible water container 17 which may be in the form ofthe well known desert water bags. That is, the containers may be fabric for cooling purposes and also for economy of construction as well as saving the weight of a metallic container and for preventing rattling of said container.
The container 17 is provided at its upper end with a dispensing outlet which may be in the form of a short length of flexible hose 18 which hose may be secured, when not used. for dispensing purposes, by means of a suitable clamp 19 secured to one of the straps or container securing devices 16.
As the dispensing outlet 18 is at the top of the bag it is obvious that no water can be spilled especially when the hose 18 is.
removed and the end of the hose 18 is inserted in said radiator opening. By applying a pressure, either with the hands or a flat board or the like, a certain amount of water is forced out of the container 17 through the hose 18 thereof and into the radiator 2, or into any other receptacle within which water may he required and into which the end of said hose may be introduced.
After the greater part of the water has been dispensed from the container 17 so that it is no longer practical to dispense a further amount by means of pressure applied to the said container, the thumb screw 11 is loosened and the lower end of the frame may then be elevated, as disclosed in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and in full lines at the right hand side of Fig. 2 of the drawings, in which position all of the water may be drained or dispensed from the container 17 without lifting the entire weight of said container and its contents.
The flexible nature of the container 17 is an important feature of the invention for by means of its provision water may be readily and easily forced from the said container in smaller or larger quantities without lifting the entire weight'of the full container and its contents as by this novel means the only wei ht raised is the weight of the water actually dispensed. By detaching the containers 17 and leaving-the frames 8 in position they may be readilyused for the transportation of other articles, when a motor vehicle is used during a touring trip or otherwise, thereby rendering available a space which has heretofore been somewhat limited on account of the shape of the front fenders 9, and which space may be readily-utilized without obstructing the view of the operator of the vehicle.
In order to prevent the containers 17 from sliding downward after being partially emptied I have provided a suitable stop 21 on the lower or rear end of'each frame 8.
When not required the entire device may be easily and readily removed from the vehicle by unscrewing the radiatorcap 3 and loosening the clamps 14: on the running boards 4:, and no alteration of the motor vehicle is required to either install or remove the device. 7
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A water carrier for motor vehicles comprising ayoke arranged to fit over the radiato'r opening of said vehicle and to be held in position by the cap of said radiator, said yoke having a lateral extension extending-beyond a side of said radiator; a frame pivotally mounted at one end there- I of upon said extension and having its op posite end lower than said pivotal end; and a water container mounted upon said frame and having a suitable dispensing outlet adj acent the upper end of the frame whereby water maybe dispensed from said container into the radiator.
52. A water carrier for motor vehicles comprising a yoke arranged to fit over the radiator opening of said vehicle and to be held securely in position by the cap of said radiator, and having lateral extensions extending on either side beyond said radiator; suitable frames pivotally mounted, at one end, upon said extensions and having their opposite ends lower than said pivotal ends; a water container mounted upon each frame and having, a suitable dispensing outlet adjacent the upper end of the frame whereby water may be dispensed from said containers when the lower ends thereof are elevated above the upper or pivotal ends of said frames.

A water carrier for motor vehicles comprising a yoke arranged to fit over the radiator opening of said vehicle and to be held securely in position by the cap of said radiator, and having lateral extensions exsuitable frames pivotally mounted, at one end, upon said extensions and having their opposite ends lower than said pivotal ends; a water container mounted upon each frame and having a suitable dispensing outlet adjacent the upper end of the frame whereby water may be dispensed from said containers when the lower ends thereof are elevated above the upper or pivotal ends of said frames; and means for detachably securing the lower ends of said frames to said motor vehicle.

A water carrier for motor vehicles comprising a yoke arranged to fit over the radiator opening extension of said vehicle and to be held securely in such position by the cap of .said radiator, said yoke having extensions extending beyond each side of said radiator; a frame pivotally mounted at one end upon .e'ach extension of the yoke and having its opposite end arranged lower than said pivotal end; a flexible water container detachably mounted upon each frame and having a dispensing outlet at its upper end whereby water may be dispensed by elevating the lower end of said frame and its container or by pressure applied upon said container.

A water carrier for motor vehicles comprising a yoke arranged to fit over the radiator opening extension of said vehicle and to be held securely in such position by the cap of said radiator, said yoke having extensions extending beyond each side of said radiator; a frame pivotally mounted at one end upon each extension of the yoke and having its opposite end arranged lower thansaid pivotal end; a flexible water container detachably' mounted upon each frame and having a dispensing outlet at its upper end, whereby water may be dispensed by elevating the lower end of said frame and its container or by pressure applied upon said conta1ner;.and means for detachably securing the lower end of each frame to the motor vehicle.

A water carrier for motor vehicles comprising a yoke arranged to fit'over the radiator opening extension of said vehicle and to be held securely in such position by the cap of said radiator, said yoke having ex- .tensionsextending beyond each side of said radiator; a frame pivotally mounted at one end upon each extensionof the yoke and having its'opposite end arranged lower than said detachably mounted upon each frame and havinga dispensing outlet at-it s'upper end, whereby pressure applied to either container, when filled with water, will dispense said water from said container, and where' by said water may be dispensed by elevating the lower end of said frame and its container; and a suitable clamp arranged to be detaehably mounted upon each side of said motor vehicle adjacent the lower end of each frame, each of said clamps having an arcuate slot therein having its center at the pivotal point of the frame; and a thumb screw mounted upon the lower end of each frame and arranged to move into the said slot of the clamp to rigidly engage the same whereby the lower end of each frame may be securely held against upward movement.

9. A water carrier for motor vehicles comprising a yoke having a central opening arranged to engage the filling extension of the radiator of said vehicle, and to be held threon by the cap of said radiator, said yoke being provided'with lateral extensions extending beyond each side of said radiator;
mounted upon each frame and extending downwardly therefrom; and a flexible detachably mounted upon each frame and having a dispensing outlet in the upper end thereof; and a suitable clam detachably connected to said motor vehicle and arranged to detachably engage and secure the lower end of said frame.

A carrier for motor vehicles comprising a yoke having a central opening arranged to engage the filling radiator of said motor vehicle and to be held in such position by the cap of said radiator when said cap is screwed upon said extension, said yokeextending laterally from each side of said radiator; and a frame connected to each extension of the yoke and inclined rearwardly therefrom and connected at its other end to the running board of said Inotor vehicle.
