Be it known that I, JEAN S. MILLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dolls, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to dolls and particularly to dolls having head and limb members that are readily detachable from the body.

Heretofore, it has been the practice to provide dolls having heads and limb members formed integrally with the body or with 15 the head separably connectedto the body portion and rigidly secured thereto after attachment. The objection to the dolls with separable heads that were heretofore proposed is that the head is not adjustable relative to the body after it is secured thereto and, therefore, the doll ,is not as useful as a source of amusement for the child. Furthermore, the limbs of the doll may become mutilated or broken, thus destroying the usefulness of the entire doll. By providing readily separable limb portions, such muti,- lated parts are quickly replaced and there is no longer reason for discarding the doll. The child is also provided with a toy that may have the arms and legs bent in various positions for its lgreater amusement andV with heads 'having di erent facial characteristics, and with members that spring back into position when displaced. A. furtherl object of my invention is to provide a soft rubber head covering for the doll that may be drawn over the head to impart different characteristic features to the doll as hereinafter explained in detail.

Other advantages of. my invention will appear from a detailed description of certain embodiments of my invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows an assembled doll conv structed in accordance with my invention;

Fig. 3 shows a. limb attached to the doll to permit the doll to assume a seating posture;

The doll body l, as shown in the drawings, has a series of sockets 2 that are adapted to receive, various body members comprising a head 3, arms 4 and legs 5. Each of the body members has a connecting member that includes a ball portion 6 that is adapted to fit within the corresponding socket 2 to secure the particular member in place.

In order to facilitate the attachment and detachment of the various body members, the body of the doll may be composed of a rubber composition or other semi-elastic material, such as rubber and cork or other substance that provides semi-yieldable openings to the various sockets that will receive the cooperating ball portion 6 of the body members and adjustably secure such members in place, or the body and body members may be formed of a rigid material such as bisque. The body may be chambered or otherwise constructed to obtain a very li ht structure. When the bod is formed o an unyielding material the all portion of the connection by joining the arms and legs may be formed with any suitable spring arrangement that will permit the ball to be introduced into the corresponding body socket to attach the members to the body. Fig. 2 particularly illustrates a spring ball arrangement that ma readily be sprung into an unyielding soc et to secure the corresponding arm or leg to the bod The salient advantages of the a ove ilexible connection are that it permits the ready interchange of the body members by the child so that a number of heads having different facial or racial characteristics, an limbs bent to various positions, may be interchanged by the child, thus obtaining various expressions or postures or other characteristics of the doll which increase its usefulness and educationad value as a source of amusement for the child.

This covering may be formed in any suitable mold that is adapted to impart expression or form to the facial features of the head may embody. various forms of hats or other' head adornments that `the child may readily draw over the head of its doll. The head coverings shown in Figs. 4 and 5 could replace theA covering used on the doll shown in ig. l.

The advantage of employing separable body members that are also adjustable relative to the body of the doll, will readily be appreciated. For instance, the head may be turned from side to side or nodded, and it will spring back into place if attached to the body as herein provided, head coverings may be used to impart any racial, grotesque,

or other'characteristic to the face of the doll and the limbs may be bent to any desired position or replaced by other limbs -to adapt the doll to the fancies ofthe child.

Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate connecting members in greater detail. The enlarged ends of the link l() which is formed of rubber, snap into place in the respective sockets 1n substantially the ,same manner as the corresponding ball and socket members of the previously described joints.

Fig. 7 is a more detailed illustration of a rubber connection 1'1, such as that employed to secure the head of the doll shown in Fig. 1 and which holds the attached member of the doll at greater, distance from the bodythan the previously described joints. Thus a short thick rubber section is provided between articulated parts that affords greater latitude of movement for such parts than is obtained in the other arrangements. This flexible link gives grotesque effects by providing greater freedom of movement of the attached members and by causing those members to spring back into place when displaced by bending the link while still per'- mitting the parts to be moved by twisting the enlarged ends in the conlining sockets.

The illustrated embodiments of my invention are but a few of the many arrangements that may be employed and details o f construction that may be adopted in carrying out the principles of my invention. I, therefore, desire that only such limita tions shall be imposed on my :invention as are indicated by the spirit and scope of the accompanying claims.

What I claim is:

A doll comprising a body having a socket therein, a body member having a socket therein, a flexible connecting link having a ball portion on each end, each ball portion being adapted to be sprung into said sockets to thereby secure said body member to said body in adjustable flexible relation therewith. An article of manufacture comprising a rubber head covering for a doll having facial features and charac-ters formed there# on and adapted to lit over the headV of a doll having different facial features to change the facial features of the doll, saidrcovering being readily separable from the head and terminatin substantially at the 'shoulders of the dol.
